Humanism Essay
Humanism

Encarta Dictionary says that Humanism is a system of thought that centers on human beings and
their values, capacities and worth. Encarta also goes on the say that, in philosophy, humanism is an
attitude that emphasizes the dignity and worth of an individual. A basic premise of humanism is that
people are rational beings who possess within themselves the capacity for truth and goodness. I
see myself as a being a humanist through everyday life. I always try to see the good in a person
when he/she makes me angry or sad, and say I to myself that maybe that person has had a bad day
and living life is difficult at the moment. Socrates was even an early humanist of sorts. He can be
quoted as saying, to know the good is to do the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those human rights are the right to health, freedom, spirituality and so on. Today more than 60
countries promote humanist groups.
Money, violence and discrimination today dominate society, and the Humanist Movement is trying
to stop these obsessions from leading our everyday lives. The effort of these groups is to have a
radical transformation in social, political and personal fields. All these changes must be made in a
non violent way as to preserve our existence with dignity.
Without knowing it, we have all experienced humanism within out lives: working with counselors,
psychologists and even teachers. Most of them want to help us find the good within ourselves. A
teacher, when one was younger, tried to show one right from wrong; a counselor tries to help
people work through problems, such as showing one that he/she is a person that is good. Even a
friend can make a comment that makes one feel proud for something kind that one did. These are all
humanistic approaches to life, perhaps not practiced all the time by these people, but practiced
nonetheless.
In conclusion, to practice humanism is to spread kindness and peace each day and to not let the
minor, snippy remarks and crabbiness of others bother us. We must try to realize that this person
might be having a bad day or be experiencing a loss or hardship. This may be

Etiquette and Introductions

Proper etiquette is the acceptable ways in which a person behaves in public. These rules have a
long time existing and have showed in all cultures. Depending on the geographic location, these
etiquettes have changed. For example: if you live in Germany, it s totally normal to drink beer at
any time of the day. On the contrary English people would think of these as an insult. They drink
only tea, and it shall be done at specific times, like on a meeting.

The manners and ways of the nineteenth century were quite different from those of today (as anyone

As men were the principal gender during these time, they didn t have the rules that ladies have, in a
way, yes, they had more freedom. Anyway, they did have some manners and actions they should
follow:

When a man is appointed on a date with a girl, he has to invite her to walk down the sidewalk while
they talk.
While going up stairs, the man should go before the woman, when going down, he should go after.
While on a carriage, he must not seat next to a woman unless he is a person from her family. He
must leave the carriage first and help the woman out.
When at a public event, the man must go first to find the woman a seat. If there are elder, he has to
take his hat off.
Men are introduced to women.
Men cannot smoke when ladies are around.

Although, there are some actions that one must never make. Here are some examples (for men):
Refer to another person by their first name in public
Curse while ladies are present (also smoke)
Leave a lady you know unattended, except with

Use of Polarization in Goodbye, Mr. Chips Essay
Use of Polarization in Goodbye, Mr. Chips

Opposites attract. James Hilton uses this fact in Goodbye, Mr. Chips to create tension in the story;
however, he makes greater use of this polarization to develop the character of Chips. Mr. Chips and
Katherine Bridges may be viewed not only as opposites but also as arguments. Hilton uses thesis in
the form of young Chips and antithesis in the form of Katherine Bridges to arrive at synthesis, the
personality and character of the mature schoolmaster.

Hilton portrays young Chips as lacking in confidence. During an interview, Chips, a schoolteacher in
his early twenties, admits to Wetherby, the head of Brookfield, that disciplining young boys was not

At forty, Chips considers himself rooted, settled, and quite happy (11).

When Chips is forty eight, an age at which permanence of habits begins to be predictable, Hilton
introduces Katherine Bridges, a young and unemployed governess, to create tension. While on
summer vacation at Wasdale Head, Chips first sees Katherine waving excitedly from a rocky ledge.
He believes that she is stranded and in need of help. In his attempt to rescue her, Chips finds himself
rescued instead of the rescuer, and neither role is one for which he had much relish (20). Katherine,
who typifies the New Woman of the nineties that Chips abhors, feels responsible for Chips s
injury and visits him daily. At first Chips doesn t know what to do with Katherine: he isn t
articulate and doesn t think it worthwhile to contradict her ideas and opinions, so he just listens to
her chatter. Soon Chips looks forward to the glimpse of her safety bicycle careering along the
lakeside road (23). Katherine likes Chips initially because he was so hard to get to know . . . and
because his opinions dated from those impossible seventies and eighties . . . yet were . . . so
thoroughly honest . . . (24). Chips and Katherine fall in love within a week. Prior to their marriage,
Katherine tells Chips that she believes that schoolmastering is an important calling and that
How To Read The Book This Lullaby
¨This Lullaby¨ By Sarah Dessen is a good book, but not one of the best I´ve read. I would rate it 3.5
out of 5, it is slow and not a lot of big or crazy things happen in the book that would knock you out
of your seat, you have to keep reading to find out what going to happen next. I would recommend
this book for teenagers who like romance and real life problems of high school girls, I picked this
book to read because the plot looked interesting and I like to read drama and romance books, they
are my favorite. ¨This Lullaby¨ has a lot of real life problems that could help you with your family,
friends and relationships, It is about a girl named Remy, who is eighteen years old. Remy s motheris
now on her fifth marriage, because of her mother s
The White Nile And The Red Land In Ancient Egypt
In Ancient Egypt they call their land The Red Land. They called it the Red Land because desert
seemed to have a red hue as in color. As the land around the Nile turned black when the Nile
flooded. The Nile formed as the ancient sea shifted creating the Mediterranean Sea basin. The Upper

Habitat Shrinking And Becoming More Fragmented By Helen...
The article I chose, Panda s Habitat Shrinking and Becoming More Fragmented , was written by
Helen Briggs for BBC News. The article talks about how the giant panda s habitat, the Sichuan,
Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, is much worse than it was 30 years ago. The article said that even
though the giant panda was taken off the endangered list last year the loss of habitat is still a very
serious threat to the animal. The article said that the reason for this is because the panda s are being
split up from each other. The development of roads running through their habitat splits them up so
that they re aren t able to find each other to breed. Other things such as earthquakes, agriculture,
tourism, and logging have majorly affected the habitat as
Post Retirement Issues Experienced By Athletes Essay
The previous sections highlighted post retirement issues experienced by athletes, (i.e., hardships,
future concerns, identity issues, career planning decisions, etc.). To summarize, the literature has
consistently supported that most athletes struggle with retirement (Warriner Lavallee, 2008;
McGannon Mauws, 2000; Reifsteck, 2011), and that athletes who are forced to retire may
experience more transition related difficulties than those who are not (Lavallee, Gordon, Grove,
1997; Heird Stienfeldt, 2013). Since the average age of athletic retirement is 33 years old (Hadavi,
2011), most retired athletes are required to obtain a new occupation; however, most athletes have
difficulty obtaining a job or feeling competent once they find a job (Stephan, Bilard, Ninot,
Deligniers, 2003). Furthermore, Stephan, Bilard, Ninot and Delignieres (2003) found that athletes
revealed feelings of incompetence towards their new occupation that lasted as long as 8 months.
Therefore, a review evaluating successful careerplanning models in general is necessary, as there are
few post retirement career planning models for athletes in existence (Lavallee, 2005; Morris Cherry,
2007; Stambulova, 2010). Prominent career planning models that will be discussed include Holland
s theory of vocational personalities, organizational investment, narrative career counseling, and
social cognitive career theory.
Holland s theory of vocational choice has become highly successful, since its
