The Tragic Cliff Essay example
The Tragic Cliff
Everyone needs a place to escape the everyday complications of life. Life has its ups and downs and
we all learn to deal with them in different ways. Some people use exercise to release stress while
others find places to hide from the stress for short periods of time.
I found a place of relaxation hundreds of feet above everyone looking down. Right outside of town
there is a cliff that overlooks the downtown area. There I feel as though I am above everyone and
nothing could touch me. I feel comfort just knowing I can observe thousands of people below me,
like looking at little ants through a microscope, yet no one can see me. Trees and bushes hover over
me like a blanket giving me shelter. It s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe we both developed a better understanding not only of each other, but of others as well. We
could have spent hours just talking, laughing, and really feeling alive. What we really found
hilarious and surprising was that Dubuque actually looked absolutely immaculate from such a
height. We would never have guessed the difference in appearance just by looking downward on the
city.
One of the first times my friend and I explored the cliff she found a ragged looking envelope with a
dated letter of desperation in it. It was addressed to Whom it May Concern, and its contents were
packed with problems, dreams, answers, and lies in a sing song pattern. We had to read it a
couple of times to fully consume the poetry and figure out the words that were erased from the
still damp paper. About three pages the poet went on about life in general. It really touched the
both of us and after that, we began to bring our poetry to the cliff and read aloud some of our
thoughts. We never did find out who the author of the poetic letter was, however, it gave us both
the feeling of new hope. I found it very refreshing to know that some people face life s obstacles
in such a creative way. The way I see it and I think the way the author of the poem sees it, is that
when in nature, and especially looking down upon the world, there is a distance you begin to take
on from that world, the world of the not so beautiful reality. I believe people
Newsworthiness of Child Abuse Cases
Society is now what Downing, Mohammadi and Mohammadi (1990) would call a media culture
, this is where the perceptions and images of reality are often shaped by the actions and decisions
of news editors and producers (Surrette, 1992). The role of the media according to O Shaughnessy
and Stadler (2008) is to give the public an insight on what is happening in the world and to make
sense of that information to the public. The main focus of this essay will be looking two main
concepts which are newsworthiness and the dark figure of crime, relating 5 news articles that are
centred around child abusethat have featured in the New Zealand Herald and stuff.co.nz.
The media plays an important role in society by creating and shaping society s attitudes about most
current issues including child abuse. In New Zealand, as well as in the international media, the
physical abuse of a child regularly features in the newspapers, magazines, radio and television
(Merchant, 2010). When it comes to the public understanding of child abuse, this is influenced by
the knowledge that they gain through reading newspapers or mass media like the television or radio.
Kitzinger (2004) states that our individual view and sense of the world are a social construct and the
media are an important resource to help us construct that world view.
The way that child abuse is reported in the media has become what you would call entertainment
where there seems to be an incline towards dramatising child abuse in a
Policies For Breaking The Cycle Of Poverty
In this unit we looked at different policies for breaking the cycle of poverty and lifting people out
of it. This cycle is isn t impossible to break but it can seem like it to the people inside. Growing up
in poverty raises the chance for a child to stay under the poverty line when they group. While
there are obviously policies to help break the cycle, this is obviously still a big enough problem to
millions of Americans. The inability to break this cycle creates a large barrier to people in povertyto
escape. Nobody really wants poverty to continue, but at some level there needs to be separate
economic classes in our society. The problem with the system now is that people don t really
have equal opportunity to move between these classes. The rich tend to stay rich and the poor
tend to stay poor. This combined with the increasing gap between the poor and rich is making
escaping the cycle of poverty even harder. This lack of mobility is what creates the inequality of
opportunity. So if no one wants poverty to exist, why is there not a stronger push to end it or
improve the conditions? The readings made clear that the problem isn t in the effort, the problem is
in THE approach taken. Currently, our collective belief about welfare is that it is only to be given
to those who deserve it. This is the approach taken by the Personal Responsibility and Work
Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996. This created stipulations requiring recipients to be
employed in order to
Security Governance in Afghanistan
Security Governance in Afghanistan
I.Summary:
Afghan security forces have lead security responsibility throughout the country, and the United
States and its partner countries are reducing military involvement in Afghanistan. The current
International security mission terminates at the end of 2014 and is expected to transition to a
smaller mission consisting mostly of training the Afghanistan National Security Forces (ANSF).
The number of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, which peaked at about 100,000 in June 2011, was
reduced to a pre surge level of about 66,000 by September 2012, and to about 34,000 as of
February 2014. The U.S. force will shrink to about 28,000 by June 1 and to 22,000 by the end of
October. A residual force that will remain in Afghanistan after 2014 is likely to consist of about
12,000 U.S. and NATO trainers and mentors, of which about two thirds would be U.S. forces, plus
about 3,000 mostly U.S. counterterrorism forces. No decisions on the residual force have been
announced, in part because President Hamid Karzai refuses to sign a required Bilateral
Security Agreement (BSA) before he leaves office in mid 2014. All the candidates in presidential
election which took place with apparent high turnout and minimal violence publicly support the
agreement. But a successor will likely not take office until July 2014 at the earliest, constraining the
U.S. and NATO force planning process. Fearing instability after 2014, some ethnic and political
faction leaders are

The Importance Of Meat Eating
Meat is something that is seen as being detrimental for obtaining a nutritious and healthy diet,
however, as society has changed, we have learned that might not be the case anymore. What this
means is that when we look in our pasts, meat eating has been something which has always
happened; first starting with hunter and gathering societies to when our grandparents and parents
were growing up. However, now fast forwarding to today s society, we can see that meateating is not
something that is very common. The reasons for this change of attitude towards meat eating
varies and will be explored later in this essay as part of how vegetarians have obtained their
identity with their eating habits. With that being said, we must begin this essay by looking at
what it was like for someone who consumes meat on a daily basis to give it up for a week and
become a vegetarian. We will close this essay by looking at the ways that doing this experiential
learning project has shaped the ways in which I think of the relationship between foodand identity as
well as food and environmental issues. I m going to start by admitting that I thought this project
was going to be an absolute walk in the park, but as I started planning for my week of meals I
quickly realized how wrong I was. As I mentioned in the opening piece, I eat meat approximately
twice a day, whether it be a chicken salad sandwich for lunch or pork chops or spaghetti and
meatballs for supper, so altering this was for sure a

1. Identify your thesis statement. How can it be more clear and/or specific? If you don t have a
thesis, identify a common thread or idea between the two assigned readings and create one.
Remember, a synthesis is not a compare contrast essay.

designing the layout to place products as many as possible in the supermarkets because these
strategies can help increase profits through stimulating consumers to more food in larger size

of the two articles needs more work. I need to make it more clear.
3. Do you summarize the parts of the original articles that are directly related to their synthesis? If
not, make note of which parts of the synthesis would benefit from such a summary. If so, make sure
that the summary is objective when it needs to be and cited properly when necessary.
I summarize the parts of the original parts. For the article Go Forth and Fortify , I summarized the
part of the necessity of adding amounts of vitamins and minerals in the food and beverage and the
effectiveness of fortification in improving health. For the article The Supermarket: Prime Real Estate,
I summarized the part of the tactics behind the layout of the store and the product placement. The
summary is objective.

Algebra And Algebraic Thinking Sets Essay
Algebra is a major mathematical strand that has been incorporated across all year levels within the
Victorian Curriculum. The many components within and interrelated with algebra and algebraic
thinking sets children up, not only for formal algebra in high school, but for life (Reys, et al.,
2012). This paper will be addressing some of the main ideas and understandings associated with
Algebra. Key skills, strategies and ways of thinking will also be explored along with strategies for
teaching the content effectively.
Literature review (up to 800 words)
Algebra is a critical aspect of mathematics which provides the means to calculate unknown values.
According to Bednarz, Kieran and Lee (as cited in Chick Harris, 2007), there are three basic
concepts of simple algebra: the generalisation of patterns, the understanding of numerical laws and
functional situations. The understanding of these concepts by children will have an enormous
bearing on their future mathematical capacity. However, conveying these algebraic concepts to
children can be difficult due to the abstract symbolic nature of the math that will initially be foreign
to the children. Furthermore, each child s ability to recall learned numerical laws is vital to their
proficiency in problem solving and mathematical confidence. It is obvious that teaching algebra is
not a simple task. Therefore, the importance of quality early exposure to fundamental algebraic
concepts is of significant importance to allow all

the total gaming audience and 52% of the revenue from video games and systems, holiday and
next generation consoles/games drove most of the sales and account for 38% of GameStop s sales,
thereby making the Seasonal Gift Giver a critical customer market to target. With the target markets
and each customer s key drivers identified, we now take a closer look at the how GameStop has
differentiated it s value chain, pricing strategy, trade in process, and marketing campaigns.
Value Chain Pricing Strategies
GameStop is familiar with its consumer base and tailors its value chain to provide a differential
product in the marketplace. Game Stop can provide a singular experience to consumers through
having a single stop for customers to cover all gaming needs. GameStop provides this differential
experience through its staff, gaming publication, extensive inventory and marketing that leans on
internal products. Game Stop extracts value from each business area not only to grow sales, but
also for sustainability. New hardware and games are offered at the store and online. New system

The Doctrine Of Separate Legal Personality
In this essay I will begin with the concept of a company having a separate corporate personality
and limited liability with their importance in company law. The doctrine of separate legal
personality which was made by the House of Lords in Salomon v Salomon and co ltd (1897) was
the landmark case. Furthermore I will describe the concept of the veil of incorporation . I will
give relevant cases of when the veil of incorporation can be lifted by the courts and statuary
provisions, for instance, s.16 Companies Act 2006 and incorporate different viewpoints of the
judges. Finally I will state whether or not I agree with the given articulation. 1.1The consequences
of incorporation Corporate Personality The doctrine of Separate legal personality has long been
regarded as a cornerstone of English law . The main substance of a company is that it has a
corporate legal personality different from the members who form it. As a consequence of the

shares of the firm except six, which were held by his wife, daughter and four sons. Part of the
payment for the transfer of the business was made in the form of debentures issued by the

the company as an agent and that he has to indemnify the agent. In the court of appeal Salomon s

The Importance Of Drug Smuggling In Australia
Nearly one third of the 545 Australians currently imprisoned or facing charges overseas were
convicted or arrested for drug related crimes, according to the latest figures from the Department of
Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Drug smuggling overseas is an enormous problem in our generation.
Our society has seen countless of offenders in the newspapers and on social media, including the
outrageously infamous Bali Nine, Cassie Sainsbury and Schapelle Corby as the drug smugglers most
emphasised in the media in the last 15 years. Serious criminal offences committed like these cases
see drug smugglers sentenced to harsh sentences in overseas countries like Bali and Columbia.
However for large cases like these, special applications can be made for Serious Overseas Criminal
Matters through the government. The only way to be eligible for Serious Overseas Criminal Matters
is by being sentenced to either imprisonment for 20 years or more, or the death penalty. To be
sentenced to convictions like this the person must have committed a serious offence, involving a
large amount of drugs. When amounts like these are used in cases it s hard to understand how the
convicted person is not guilty. It goes without saying innocent until proven guilty and cases like
Schapelle Corby and Cassie Sainsbury continually express their innocence, however with evidence
and flaws in their cases it s hard to see how innocent is the case. Drug smuggling, whether it be a
mule or the ringleader is a seriously

Bubonic Plague Renaissance
Wars and the Bubonic plague had a major impact on the decline of Middle Age Italy. There
needed to be a change and that change came with the families of the Renaissance. These families
made Italy what it could become. One of the families was the Medici Family. The Medici family,
also known as the House of Medici, first attained wealth and political power in Florencein the 13th
century through its success in commerce and banking (Staff 2009). Banking and commerce was the
reason they became one of the important houses in Florence. Another major family was the Borgia
family. Commerce and politics was also the reason for the families rise. The two families have been
in competition for the reward of being the most important family of the Renaissance.... Show more

The family was very prominent and powerful but they were suspected of many crimes and had
many enemies. Cesare Borgia s life was controlled by his enemies and fear of losing his position
and control. Despite all his undoubted brilliance and cunningness, he knew that his position was
vulnerable and he fears that after his father s death his enemies would destroy him
(dailyhistory.org 2017). When his father died he attempted to install a Pope who could be
manipulated by him to obey the interests of the Borgias. This resulted in a poor papacy. Cesare s
was brilliant but he did further damage to the reputation of the Church and the Papacy and that led
to unnecessary wars and conflicts. The family was too raped up on their interests to think about how
their actions affected Italian history. However, the family and their ambitions did damage the
institutions of the Renaissance Papacy, upset the balance of power among the City States and they
helped to usher in a new and bloody phase in Italian history (dailyhistory.org 2017). The family s
ambition was a factor in disturbing Italy and encouraging France to invade Italy which led to many
decades of war. Cesare Borgia may have had an influence but it wasn t a superior

Fundamental CONTENT
The statement Diaspora‟ has been taken from the Greek, signifying to scatter. Bill Ashcroft, Gareth
Griffiths and Helen Tiffin characterize „Diaspora‟ as the willful or persuasive development of
people groups from their countries into new districts. (Ashcroft 68).
Robert Cohen depicts diasporas as the groups of people groups living respectively in one nation
who recognize that the old nation a country regularly covered somewhere down in dialect, religion,
custom or legends dependably has some case on the devotion and emotions (Cohen
