Project Abstract (Please describe your source of inspiration and idea, how your project would solve a
problem or improve the current situation, and details of product/service’s offerings, distinct features
and advantages)
Source of Inspiration: Feeling of depression on walking into the trash room and finding it filled to the
brim with plastic.
Idea: Waste management system, reduction of waste and ultimately change in type of waste from
plastic to environmental friendlier waste (banana leaf packaging).

Three phases:
1) Waste management system and awareness:
1) use technology QR database that aids garbage segregation and create a logistic pipeline
for the waste to be recycled
2) create a reward mechanism for segregation at source to encourage community wide
participation.
3) Raise awareness of why this is important through art, performances, lunch table talks
and sensitizing events
4) Advocate for local government to take up this issue and create a framework of policy that
also works towards limiting one-time use plastics and packaging materials.

2) Waste reduction by implementing a means for waste collection. EG plastic bottles collected
and sanitized for reuse. Alternate uses created. Set up framework on one-time use plastics
and convince restaurants in immediate surroundings to adopt greener packaging practices

3) Use of local natural material to replace plastic such as bamboo-based, plant leaf-based
packaging.

Service: We plan to provide a service to the local government as a private sector that reinforces
environmental policies through devices including but not limited to raising awareness and
constructing an environmentally friendly campus that recycles and reduces plastics by means of
implementing related policies and offering supplements to the material discussed here in DKU and
the outwards to the city of Kunshan.

Distinct features This will be a long-term student-organized effort with the assistance and
collaboration with the school and eventually the local government to reinforce and reinvent existing
global environmental policies and practices.

Advantages:
- Future readying China
- We anticipate a policy on segregation to be effective nationwide given Shanghai has already
adopted this policy. This puts us in a unique position to become logistical support to any
organization or municipal body to put this in motion.
- Existing support of organizations and entrepreneurs from other parts of the world who are
already running successful ventures of the same capacity and with the same aims.
- Providing local job opportunities and creating vernacular economies.

Our mission is to create innovative waste management systems.
We aim to redesign the food and beverage industry, helping them transition from ‘planet polluting’
to more planet-friendly, sustainable packaging alternatives.

Local Research and Take Away from Shanghai

I will be researching on the current waste management system in Kunshan, what the government is
proposing, how it is taking actions, who are the potential cooperators, etc. (3 minutes)

I also want to look at what we can take away from Shanghai’s practice. (2 minutes)

Materials Research and Sales Strategy

I will be creating sales strategy. I will define our clients and define approaches to reach out to them. I
will collaborate with ‘local researchers’ to identify ways to set meets, pitch to clients. I will present a 2
min sales pitch next meeting.

I will also investigate new materials. For this, I will take help from Sophomores to connect with
professors who can guide me on this and consult “Biological design” literature for research. I hope to
make a 2 min presentation next week on what we may adopt.

Global Research and Marketing

I will be conducting research on best practices related to waste management and environmentally
sustainable packing across the globe. I will also help with setting up and managing business social media
and website when the business is more established in the future.

I will also give a 3 min presentation next meeting on the practices we can learn from and adopt from the
Americas.

Global Research and Finance Management

I will conduct some strategies to waste management in Asian countries and the challenges they face.
Moreover, I will do a cost benefit analysis of materials used by businesses in the supply chain.

I will give a 3 min presentation next meeting on the current situation in Asia and potential we can hope
for.

Christiana

Product Development and Marketing/PR

I will be doing research on possible alternatives/new materials (product development) and will give a
short presentation on this next week. I will also be reaching out to different professors to look for a
potential supervisor for our team.

I will also be working on how we can market our group through social media (e.g. WeChat account) and
will assist in creating posters, presentations, websites, future merchandise and etc.

Alberto

I will be looking into the possible packaging alternatives used by different food and beverages
companies. In addition, I will design a PR and outreach strategy to be applied within the university to
gain support and recognition of possible allies (especially among leadership positions).

Finally, I will conduct research on waste management strategies implemented in Europe.
