Romanticism In The Children s Hour By Lillian Hellman
In a revolt against romanticism, realism attempts to represent subjects and events as truthfully and
unidealized as possible. Throughout The Children s Hour, by Lillian Hellman, many characteristics
of realism are prevalent. The play follows two women, Karen and Martha, who run a girl s
boarding school, but their lives are quickly ruined when Mary, an unkind, manipulative girl at the
school, starts a rumor that they are lesbian lovers. Some aspects of realism the playcontains are
attention to detail, plausible events, the importance of class, and characters that are complex mixes
of good and bad. In the play, Hellman utilizes attention to detail for the story to come together.
Through these specific descriptions, she provides the reader with context that makes the rest of the
story conceivable. At the start of the play, the author gives background, including that the girls were
aged from twelve to fourteen (Hellman, pg 8). While this detail may seem insignificant, it is
impactful as it assists the reader in understanding the immaturity of the girls in the school Although
there would be a general understanding of their age because they attend a school, this detail helps
narrow the age down, which helps the audience to grasp why the events of the novel transpired, as
some of the sophomoric girls catalyze the events that transpire by overhearing a conversation they
should not have and passing the information on to Mary. Another piece of background
Egyptian Culture
These workers have spent countless days on crafting me, They use these tools to craft edges to
give me shape. For I do not know what exactly I am yet, I know I must be important. One man,
who must be the ruler or leader of these people, checks on me everyday to see how close I am to
being done. I do not understand these people, but I believe that I am their creation using two
different cultures. As I take shape, I can see that my body is the shape of a creature. They call it
an animal, from what i can hear them talk about this animal, they call it a lion. This lion, is huge
in the egyptian culture. The fur and the lion s muscles are beautifully done to the point where im
am impressed. This process takes an incredibly long time to finish and takes an incredible amount
of concentration. I am not made of the same material as the crafters, they look soft and warm but i
feel like I am quite solid and cold. I over hear the workers talking about how I am made from granite,
a sculpting material only used for the greatest of works.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is puzzling to me because that would make me half man and half lion. Learning more from
hearing the workers talking, I have found out that the Egyptians have been taken over by a new
ruler. For a very long time, Egypt has been taking a lot of things from its neighbors the Kushites.
The Kushites have lived near the Egyptians for thousands of years, and always have been looked
down upon by its northern neighbor. They would often steal their resources, like their gold, ivory
and often their slaves. Slaves are a huge proponent of Egyptian culture, and even Egypt was said to
be the Master to the Kushites. Although recently, the Kushites have conquered all of the cities in
Egypt and have gained rule over
Experiences of World War One in All Quiet on the Western...
Wars have always been events that I enjoy learning about, reading about and just discovering what
went on. So when this project rolled around I had no problem choosing the novel All Quiet on the
Western Front, which was written by Erich Maria Remarque. Erich had been a German soldier
towards the end of WWI and had, first hand experienced the pure terror that is war. I had heard of
this book through my father who is also a major war enthusiast. Him and I have had numerous
conversations about both World War Iand II, as he was the one that originally suggested I read this
book. I have to say that it was a tremendous suggestion in that this novelto me seems to be one of
the finest pieces of anti war literature ever penned. The way the novel is able to portray the mindset
of a soldier was beautifully done and shows the complete deterioration that occurs over time. First to
understand more about the novel and its author, Erich Maria Remarque, it would be helpful to learn
about his life. Erich was born on June 22, 1898 (internet source 4) in the town of Osnabruck
Germany. He was born into a poor family to his father, Peter Maria Kramer, and mother, Anna
Marie Kramer (internet source 5). His father was a bookbinder while Erich was a kid (internet
source 5). He also had 2 other siblings and his family as a whole moved at least 11 during his
childhood. To say Erich had a turbulent childhood would be an understatement; he grew up in
circumstances most people could not even begin
The Occupational Safety And Health Administration Essay
administrative law judge of the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission would have
to affirm the citation issued by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The
Commission s judge would then rule the employer is in violation if the four required elements of
the citation under the General Duty Clause exist. The Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) took an aggressive enforcement approach with workplace violence
which leads to the issuing of eight General Duty Clause citations within the two year period of
1993 through 1995 for workplace violence. Even though they don t list workplace violence among
the twenty National Emphasis programs they routinely target various industries with unusually
high injury or illness rates for inspections. According to Cornell HR Review, other forms of case
law have been enacted in different states do to an up rise of workplace violence. The state
California became the first state to pass a workplace violence law when it enacted the Workplace
Violence Safety Act (WVSA) Cal. Civ. Proc. Code § 527.8 (2012). The law allows an employer
to obtain a temporary restraining order an injunction against any individual who has engaged in
unlawful violence or has made a credible threat of violence in the workplace. A judge must find by
clear and convincing evidence that a person engaged in unlawful violence or made a credible threat
of violence against the employee before it becomes mandatory that the judge issues an
Climate Change Paradigm Essay
Paradigm Shifts of Climate Change

Climate change has been a very popular topic lately with all the crazy natural acts of destruction
occurring lately. Hurricane Harvey, Irma and now Hurricane Nate. Most experts argue that the recent
occurrence of tropical storms has to do with the tremendous amount of global warming within the
atmosphere. I for one agree that there is a correlation between climate change and natural disasters.
The outcomes of an increase in global temperatures include increased risk of drought and increased
intensity of storms and tropical cyclones with higher wind speeds.

Three unique articles were analyzed and assessed for potential information that would be beneficial
to include in this report. First off let s tackle the main vocabularies in these sources. They all
seemed to agree with this working definition of climate change. According to NASA, a change in
global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century
onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the
use of fossil fuels. Let us also discuss another staple vocabulary term that will be utilized in this
research document, natural disaster. Natural disaster can be defined as a, a natural event such as a
flood, earthquake, or hurricane that causes great damage or loss of life. Or, according to Merriam
Webster dictionary, a major adverse event resulting from natural processes of the Earth;

A Plea for a Peircean Turn in Analytic Philosophy Essay
A Plea for a Peircean Turn in Analytic Philosophy

ABSTRACT: Criticisms of analytic philosophy have increased in intensity in the last decade,
denouncing specifically its closing in on itself, which results in barrenness and ignorance of real
human problems. The thought of C. S. Peirce is proposed as a fruitful way of renewing the analytic
tradition and obviating these criticisms. While this paper is largely a reflection on Hilary Putnam s
study of the historical development of analytic philosophy, not only can some of its main roots be
traced back to Peirce, but also the recent resurgence of pragmatism can be regarded as a pragmatist
renovation of the analytic tradition. Further, Peirce s thought offers suggestions for tackling some ...

On the one hand, not only can some of the main roots of analytic philosophy be traced back to
Peirce, but the recent resurgence of pragmatism (Bernstein, 1992) can also be regarded as a
pragmatist renovation of analytic philosophy. On the other hand, Peirce s thought offers suggestions
for tackling some of the most stubborn problems in contemporary philosophy, and in particular he
may help us to shoulder once again the philosophical responsibility which has been largely abdicated
by much of 20th century philosophy (Debrock, 1992: 1).

In order to show this, my paper is divided in four sections: 1) A brief description of the decline of
analytic philosophy; 2) the return of the history of philosophy as a key to its recovery; 3) Charles
S. Peirce s relevance, and finally, 4) Peirce and analytic philosophy.

1. The decline of analytic philosophy

When Wolfgang Spohn became the managing editor of the new Erkenntnis he referred to its first
eight volumes as a historically singular document, signaling a new era in philosophy with great
enthusiasm and optimism (Spohn, 1990:1). But sixty years after the founding of Erkenntnis it is
really difficult to be so enthusiastic about analytic philosophy when one notices the decline of logical
empiricism, the bewildering specialization within philosophical inquiry, and contemporary
disorientation and eclecticism in philosophy. These
The Two Fridas Picasso
Pablo Picasso, one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century and co founder of
the Cubist movement, was a participant in Europe s political discourse during most of the early
1900s. Picasso s Guernica, one of his most powerful political statements, was painted as an
immediate reaction to the Nazi s casual bombing practice on the Basque town of Guernicaduring the
Spanish Civil War. Guernica, a mural size canvas painted in blue, black, and white oil, shows
tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. Picasso
depicts turmoil, people and animals suffering, with building in disarray torn apart by violence and
mayhem. With Guernica, Picasso establishes his identity and his strength as an artist when
confronted with political authority and intolerable violence, especially in his native land.

She mostly painted self portraits that depicted the sense of who she was. Kahlo s The Two
Fridas, an oil painting, is an excellent example of how Frida Kahlo struggled with self and
cultural identity. The Two Fridas is a self painting of a dual image of Kahlo, one in traditional
Mexican garb and the other in European influenced fashion. Frida Kahlo, an European influenced
painter, painted many elements of Mexican culture including folkloric images and the Tehuana
costume which is depicted in The Two Fridas. She also wore the Tehuana herself to demonstrate
the cultural independence of Mexico but also to help her identify with the poor and the peasants
during the Mexican Revolution. Her artwork particularly speaks to women, especially women s
experiences of physical and emotional pain which is symbolized by the many broken hearts in her
self portraits, also shown in The Two Fridas. Kalho s work successfully succeeds in illustrating her
personality, life experiences, and national
Compare And Contrast Hovanness Toumanian Genocide And...
For centuries throughout their cultural history, the Armenian people have been maltreated; however
in this essay, I ll focus solely on the period from 1850 1915, which is just before the occurrence of
the Armenian genocide. The historic Armenian homelands were controlled by two empires called
the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire. The Ottoman Empirewhich controlled Western
Armenia, was home of the Turkish people, whereas the Russian Empire which controlled Eastern
Armenia was ruled by the Russians. As a result, the Western portion of Armenia was divided into six
vilayets called Van, Bitlis, Diyarbakir, Kharpert, Sivas, and Erzurum, while the remnants of Eastern
Armenia was divided into Kars and Yerevan. In account of the factors that led to this disheartening
division of the Armenians fatherland, expatriatism emerged and can be personified through
Armenian works of art such as that of Vahan Tekeyan and Hovanness Toumanian s writings. In this
essay, I will compare Eastern Armenia versus Western Armenia through... Show more content on

In Hovanness Toumanian s In the Armenian Mountains he writes, But frequently have the black
hordes of the scorching desert come and struck hard, repeatedly, at our noble caravan, in the
Armenian Mountains, those blood stained mountains. Yet our caravan confused, terrified, plundered,
massacred, and torn asunder, ever bears its innumerable wounds, in the Armenian Mountains, those
mourning mountains (Kudian 3). In this quote, Toumanian applies the phrase black hordes to
symbolize the Soviet Union and Russian Empire who came to battle the Armenians and conquer the
remaining Eastern division of their native land. The author educates the audience by using
symbolism to portray how the Armenians were caught off guard, left for dead, and as a result their
people were being forced to comply with the newly enforced Russian
