INTRODUCTION
The key to successful teaching is good planning. It serves as a guideline for the teacher as well as
for the students in creating the atmosphere conducive for worthwhile learning and purposeful
activities. Good teacher install her students urge to learn and the sincerity of purpose in all
activities. In curriculum planning there were three levels which includes societal, institutional,
instructional. The social curriculum consists institutional and instructional.
The instructional curriculum consists of content planned day by day and week by week by a
particular teacher for a particular group of students. As the instructional level teachers plan unit of
work, select materials and learning activities, set up working groups, arrange the teaching learning
environment seek to move students forward towards goals. Learning experiences originating from
the subject content and arranged in a sequence of increasing complexity are planned to help
students attain the objectives of the curriculum.
Definition
Course planning refers to planning courses of institutions.
Levels Of Course Plan
Pertains to organizing both content and learning experiences with in a unit or a subject i.e.
at the level of a course of study, at the level of unit.
Deals with designing the pattern for the entire program at the program level.
Principles Of Course Planning
State the objectives in behavioral terms which are to be achieved.
Establish sequence in order of succession the content materials has to be organized e.g.:-
in teaching bed making plan teaching of single open bed rest, admission bed next, post
operative beds, renal beds etc.
The teacher should keep in mind
What should the students learn from the e course,
What should be the sequence of topics/units,
How much time is allotted.
Ensure logical and psychological continuity to organize continuity into fewer units, easy
understanding and to avoid atomized learning and repetition.
Organize the course to use around the students. It should be adopted to the level of the
students, individual differences has to be allowed, should encourage logical memory and
problem solving,combining logical psychological requirements.
Provide cumulative learning by reinforcement.
Plan for integration.
Unity curriculum
To reduce unmanageable, the bulk of specialized subjects and bring some unity into atomized
specialization. It also reduces the unit to manageable size and serves as a centre of organization
Select an approach that is acceptable to all teachers
Provide variety in modes of learning Eg Group discussions, independent study modules,
problem solving approaches that facilitate better learning. thought provoking assignments
should be given
Structure Of Course Plan
In planning course, two kinds of planning are involved.
Identify the kinds of elements and which specific learning are to be organized (knowledge
and understanding).
The selection of specific organizing centers on which as much as possible of the learners
entire being is to be focused.
Course plan should contain
Objectives.
Specifications for level of learner and placement within the curriculum.
Resource materials needed for the course
Unit plans.
Evaluation measures..
Bibliography for both teachers and students.
Content Of Course Plan
Mention the objectives as outcomes to be achieved through the given course.
Specify the level of learners.
Brief course description.
Mention the placement of the course with in the curriculum.
Organize the organization, content topic wise, unit wise or lesson plan wise.
Describe the resource materials and methods of teaching Give the plan of learning activities
for students.eg:-assignments.
Describe the resource materials and methods of teaching.
Give references for teachers as well as for students.
Describe the procedures for ongoing and terminal evaluation
Mention place, length of experience, experience record observations, procedures, plan for
rotation with field experience, supervised and practiced.
Process of Organizing Learning Experience
The staff concerned for teaching the course must discuss and agree on the general scheme
of organization of the course for its smooth implementation.
Agreement should be made regarding the general principles of organization i.e. continuity,
sequence and integration.
The basic unit should be included.
Flexible plans should be developed which can be handled by each teacher
The plan should be used for particular activities for particular courses
Teachers Role in Course Planning
The extent to which a teacher will plan courses individually will vary from institution to
institution.
The general objectives, general areas of subject matter, matter evaluation measures for each
course will be determined at the institutional level to ensure continuity and progression in
learning, to avoid gaps and non- productive repetition in subject matter context and to
provide the reinforcement of previous learning. These all will depend on,
a) Teachers own self-appraisal.
b) Attitude towards their students teaching and learning.
c) Knowledge and skills related to area of teaching. Composition of learners group.
d) Teachers insight and skill sound ideas and understandings known conditions
e) At the institutional level teachers plan, Basis of planning.
f) Units of work.
g) Select materials and learning activities.
h) Set up working groups.
i) Arrange the teaching-learning environment.
Teacher-Student Planning
The learner/ student are the centre of the whole educative process; it is the life of teacher's efforts.
The student internal mental activities are the primary causes of learning; the teacher is only the
secondary proximate cause. Hence education in the school must be co- operative act- a joint
enterprise between the student and the teacher to achieve the desired goals. Planning for effective
teaching and learning is based on the sound educational psychological principles i.e. the objective
worth and subjective worth of the material to each student. Appropriate student involvement in
planning will help students to learn more, to acquire not only deeper understanding, but also to
plan worth-while experiences, to take wise decisions by themselves and to learn many other
important processes.
