Maryusha Antonovksy Research Paper
Maryusha Antonovksy was no more. In her place stood Mary Antin, the same immigrant Jewish girl
but with a new American name. Mary had also bought real American machine made garments to
replace her hateful homemade European style clothes. I long to forget, she said. It is painful to be
conscious of two worlds.
Fleeing Persecution Mary Antin s first world had been a Jewish village in Russia. For centuries,
Russians had discriminated against Jews, who dressed, worshiped, and ate differently from their
Christian neighbors. By the 1800s, Russia had hundreds of anti Jewish laws. Jews could live only
in certain areas. They couldn t live in big cities or own land.
In 1881, assassins killed the Russian monarch Czar Alexander II. Nervous government ... Show more

Pushcart vendors saved their money to buy horse drawn carts and then small stores. Although most
Jews were poor, they arrived in the United States with a wide range of skills. Jews worked as
cobblers, butchers, carpenters, and watchmakers. Almost half found jobs in the city s garment
factories.
Jewish immigrants did whatever they could to keep their children in school. In Europe, Jews had
honored educated people, but schooling had cost money. As a result, many Jews had never learned
to read and write. In America, Mary Antin wrote, Education was free . . . It was the one thing that
[my father] was able to promise us when he sent for us: surer, safer than bread or shelter.
Parents who made a little money often sent their sons, and sometimes their daughters, to the city s
inexpensive public colleges. By 1910, more Jewish youths over the age of 16 were still in school
than were young people of any other ethnic group.
Like other immigrant groups, Jews faced prejudice and discrimination. Most private schools and
clubs refused to accept Jews. Hospitals would not hire Jewish doctors. The New York Bar
Association would not admit Jews as lawyers. Many ads for jobs stated simply, Christians

Airline Industry and Its Economic Outline The question can be is. How has the economy of the
airline industry performed throughout the many decades it has been? In addition, what did the
industry do as it has gone through many events that have challenged its survival? In this type of
industry, we can say that it has seen their share of success in profits but has seen its share of
overwhelming down trends. You can definitely consider there is this industry depends on the
economy around it and solely affected by it too. The airline industry has seen highs when the demand

Rather than focusing on cutting jobs, they focused on reducing expenses and cutting back on
unnecessary items. The terrorist attacks are only one of the causes of crisis in the industry because
there are several issues that threaten the industry. One that was mentioned earlier gas prices. Labor
disputes are a factor as well. You may say that the airline industry has hit an extremely bad era. The
changes that these airlines are being driven to make will be very different from the way it used to be.
As most people know, the government has had much in bailing out business and the transformation
that some have undergone and the airline industry is no exception. The government has a major
influence on the restructuring of the industry and the air transportation system in general. To combat
the escalating expenses of enhanced security and diminishing supply demand, employee layoffs and
service trimming were the first areas to see cutbacks. This is certainly a competitive industry with
new companies surfacing and others failing. The restructuring will definitely influence the airline
industry s inclination concerning the development of both domestic and international service. It has
been hard for this industry to keep revenue up and cover all the rising expenses, which makes for
an obstruction in growth and prosperity. Gas prices play a massive key role in the struggle of this
industry. At one point gas prices were higher than ever before, which then started

Black Wall Street in Greenwood, Oklahoma: The Destruction and Historical Erasure of a Black
Ethnic Enclave

AAS 239: History of African Americans Since 1865

Black people living in the Deep South were free from enslavement after the Civil War, however
innumerable obstacles existed that prevented them from enjoying their rights as citizens. Blackness
was criminalized through the black codes laws that incarcerated black people for simply being
unemployed, living off the land, or voting. Meanwhile it was prohibited for blacks to testify against
white people in court, serve on juries, or seek employed in any industry other than agriculture. These
obstacles infringed on the legal and human rights of black people in the Deep South, ... Show more

In December of 1868, Ottowa O.W. Gurley was born in Huntsville, Alabama. He attended Branch
Normal College (which later became the University of Arkansas) and then headed west in the
Oklahoma land rush. In 1906, he purchased forty acres of land designated for black ownership.
More than twenty black townships emerged in Oklahoma, but Gurley s town of Greenwood
developed into a black economic engine. Over the next ten years, this suburb of Tulsa became a
thriving community of black doctors, lawyers, and other professionals affectionately known as
Black Wall Street . It was a black enclave of ethnic stability in stark contrast to the economic status of
most black communities in the country. However, the economic bliss on Black Wall Street, came to
a screeching halt in the summer of 1921. After a young white woman accused a black young man of
sexual assault, tensions rose and confrontations between the black and white communities ensued;
this friction ultimately became known as the Tulsa Race Riots of 1921, where Greenwood s black
owned homes and businesses were destroyed. Not only did white civilians incite violence, but
survivors recounted that some violent acts inflicted on the community were highly organized and
government sponsored. For example, an eyewitness account stated that government planes dropped

Three Key Themes Of War Crimes Persico
Three Themes: 1. In the Epilogue, Persico ponders the actual validity that the conspiracy charge
had throughout the Nuremberg Trials. Conspiracy was among the possible indictments along
with War Crimes, Crimes Against Humanity and Peace Crimes brought forth against the
numerous Nazi s on trial. Regarding the Conspiracy charge, Periscope goes so far as to say the
conspiracy charge was unnecessary. Persico s argument which I do see to hold validity, is that
the conspiracy charge is simply piling on to build a greater quantitative case against the selected
high ranking Nazi s while in no way at all helping the quality of the case. It was virtually impossible
to prove the guilt of any of the Nazi s by way of the conspiracy charge as zero defendants were
convicted of this charge by itself. For this reason, it didn t prove to have much a purpose as the trial
progressed.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another key theme that Persico discusses in the epilogue is justice. Persico claims that the trial
did serve justice to those who deserved it even if there were some issues with the process. There
is also the concept that Persico grapples with which is if one high ranking Nazi effectively
murders MANY innocent people and this Nazi is put on trial and later hanged, is justice served.
My belief is that although the scale is most definitely tipped, justice was served in the most just
possible way which appears to align with the ideas Persico debates in the epilogue. This form of
justice that was executed or any form of justice for that matter may not feel as fulfilling as it ought to
be knowing the horrible atrocities that were committed, however I believe that this was the best way
of handling the situation at
Involvement In France
There are presently two primary camps held by scholars of Vichy government and World War II in
regards to the popular topic of France s involvement in the oppression of its Jewish residents during
World War II. One faction argues that the actions of the French during the German occupation of
France were necessary to protect the nation, claiming that the occupation was one of
accommodation. The second group argues that policy, at least for the first two years of the German
occupation, was controlled by the new Vichy government and that the anti Semitic legislation was
supported by French politicians without Nazi persuasion; therefore, their occupation was one of
collaboration or, at the very least, one of culpability. This project will examine... Show more content

The issue had largely been avoided by the general French population and media until 1995 when the
President of France, Jacques Chirac, acknowledged the involvement of the French police in the Vel
d Hiv Roundup and admitted French culpability in the extermination of both French and foreign
born Jewish people living in France during the German occupation. Thereafter the debate of France
as a puppet state under the Germans during World War II flourished with both scholarship and
wider access to records from the time. Groundwork research does lean in favor of the camp that

Good Country People by Flannery O Connor Essay
Good Country People by Flannery O Connor

Good Country People ; by Flannery O #8217;Connor is an excellent example of irony in literature.

From beginning to end it has a steady procession of irony, much of it based on the title of the story:
#8220;Good Country People. ;
In the beginning of the story we meet Mrs. Freeman, wife of the hired hand. She and her husband
have been working for Mrs. Hopewell for four years. #8220;The reason for her keeping them so
long was that they were not trash. They were #8216;Good Country People, #8217; ; according to
Mrs. Hopewell. Ironically one of the first things we learn about Mrs. Freeman is that her previous
employer has called her #8220;the nosiest woman ever to walk the earth. ; Then, as the ... Show more

boy #8230;.People like you don #8217;t like to fool with country people like me! ; When
confronted with this Mrs. Hopewell exclaims #8220;good country people are the salt of the earth!
; and #8220;there aren #8217;t enough good country people in the world ;. Seeing that he has
found Mrs. Hopewell #8217;s weakness for #8220;Good Country People, ; Manley proceeds to
play up his being a country boy. #8220;Not even from a place, just from near a place. ; Then in
what I believe to be just another attempt to gain sympathy, Manley tells Mrs. Hopewell that he has
a heart condition and may not live long. This gains him an invitation to dinner, which he gladly
accepts. Yes Manley Pointer is a fine example of #8220;Good Country People. ; NOT! And we are
only just getting to know him.

After dinner Manley Pointer secretly asks Joy/Hulga to go on a picnic with him the next day. She
agrees and during the night she plans to seduce him. She imagines that she easily seduces him and
that then, #8220;of course, she had to reckon with his remorse. ; Being of superior intellect she
imagines that she takes his remorse in hand and changes it into a
Examples Of Meditation, Prayer And Contemplation
In this section, a detailed analysis and discussion of the findings of my sources will be used as
evidence in order to strengthen the argument of the research hypothesis, which is to what extent
does meditation, prayer and contemplation contribute to an individual s physical and psychological
well being. It would be far better if one s self could achieve holistic well being, improved peace of
mindand relaxation as well as better thought processing without the need for any form of medical
intervention. The scientific evidence of the many sources supports the notion that meditation, prayer
and contemplation improves an individual s mental, physical, emotional and spiritual well being.
The first source to support the research hypothesis is a scientific journal titled: Meditation for

Byrd s study and test results clearly showed favor for the prayer group. The results and scores
collected and analyzed clearly showed that the prayer group had an overall better outcome. The
prayer group needed lesser amounts of ventilation, antibiotics, and diuretics. Based on Byrd s
study and the data collected, there seemed to be a positive and beneficial effect on the group of
patients that received intercessory prayer (1988:4). According to the results of Byrd s study,
prayer has been shown to promote healing and holistic well being in others, and so it can be
reasoned that prayer has great potential to affect the physical and psychological well being of the
prayer beneficiary, as well as for the prayer giver him/herself.

The third source relates to contemplation and the potential contribution it could make to law
students, lawyers, and their clients. The source is a Harvard Negotiation Law Review. It is a

The Pros And Cons Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
Scientific advancements have the potential to be beneficial as well as detrimental. Whether it is
good or bad depends on numerous factors, such as the motive for the creation. In Ethics and the New
Genetics, by the Dalai Lama, he discusses how these scientific advancements can affect us on social,
political and ethical levels. He believes that while new technology can be beneficial, such as for
medical purposes, the motivation behind these creations is what can cause them to be harmful.
While new technology can be advantageous in humandevelopment and survival, it also has
consequences such as causing social and economic instability. Unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly
known as drones, initially were built to reduce casualties in a war, but the advantages also carry
risk. These war drones would minimize the causality of soldiers in combat by removing them from
the battlefield and replacing them with these unmanned flying vehicles. However, their use has not
always been beneficial. For instance, the use of these war drones has resulted in a number of civilian

By having the organ made from the patient s cell reduces the chance of that patient s body
rejecting the organ. This will also eliminate the need of a donor. Though these are all great
advantages of therapeutic cloning it has numerous disadvantages. Scientists cannot prove this
method to be completely safe for a patient. Some patients have had these cells that were made from
this process mutate into cancer cells. The cost for this is also extremely high so it is not available
to a large group of the population. While reproductive cloning of a human has not been successful

The Glorious Revolution in England of 1688
The Glorious Revolution in England of 1688 James II succession to the throne of England came
without protest of any kind. James II was the son of Charles I and younger brother to Charles II.
In January of 1649, Charles I, King of England, went on trial and was convicted as a Tyrant,
Traitor, Murderer, and public enemy to the good people of this nation. (Cannon, pg. 385) On 7
February 1649, Charles II was proclaimed King of Great Britain. While Charles II was in office, he
began to develop a form of government that existed without the parliament. In 1685, when Charles II
brother, James II, took over, James continued with the trend in government that his brother set into
action. From the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 to the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hence, the Glorious Revolution earned the name the Bloodless Revolution. This was the first
revolution where a king was dismounted without any bloodshed (Israel, pg. 432 40). As the
Glorious Revolution ended, England was forced into an immediate conflict with Louis XIV of
France. James II, a Catholic king, had been disposed of, and a Protestant king, William, husband
of Mary, James s daughter, had taken over. Louis and James were able to get along but William
and Louis were not. They began a war over what is now present day Belgium. Belgium was a key
place for fortresses and harbors (Kissinger, pg.71). Though the revolution itself may have been
bloodless, it caused much unrest in England. Old stresses between the King and Parliament,
Church and Dissent, appeared to be undiminished and were joined by bitter divisions over the
succession of William III and Mary II. This involved rebellion and war in Ireland and Scotland,
and plots, riots, and insurrection in England (Hoppit, pg. 2). It is very doubtful whether many of
the revolutionaries of 1688 foresaw the consequences of their actions in terms of England s
relations with foreign powers. Before the revolution, England was largely pro French and anti
Dutch. After 1688, France was to become more or less a permanent enemy. The Nine Years War
was actually a war spawned from the Glorious Revolution between England and France (Morgan,
pg. 353 56). After James II was relieved of
Airline Industry Essay
Airline Industry

The airline industry is extremely influenced by the elasticity of demand, externalities, wage
inequality, monetary policies, and fiscal policies. The elasticity of demand is impacted solely on the
current market conditions, and the consumer s reason for travel. The September 11th tragedy has
had a very damaging affect on the airline industry. It has impacted the fiscal and monetary policies,
supply and demand, and it has created many problems worldwide with employment. The airline
industry is perceived as being unpredictable because it is relies on the current market, and the market
is always changing. Incidents such as inflation, oil prices and terrorist attacks seriously influenced

Many people observed a decline in travel after September 11th took place because of safety
concerns. When there is a vast increase in fares that undeniably interfere with the need for travel;
this affects the price of tickets and they will continue to rise since a clear relationship between
supply and demand exists. When the employment rate is high, when the dollar is strong, and the
economy is doing well, people can afford to travel more. A high percentage of the income is
contributed to operating expenses, such as fuel and labor. Positive and negative externalities
have an important position in influencing the supply and demand of the airline industry. Since the
airline industry feels the direct results of market conditions, it is very much changed by all
externalities. A lot of people observed a drop in airline travel after the September 11th strike took
place, due to safety concerns. After a considerable increase in fares, this definitely gets in the way
of the demand for travel; and it will cause the price of tickets to keep on rising seeing as there is a
clear relationship between supply and demand. People will travel more when the economy is
thriving, and the cost of living isn t exceeding the amount of money people are making; it also helps
when the employment rate is higher too. The airline industry plays a key role in the globalization of
our economy

culture is about all they have to look forward too. The kids in the film are taught right from birth
about their culture what to do and what not to do in the slum life. The one small girl was getting
ready for school one day and her mom asked her how she was going to do on her test the little girl

told her to not be too confident because that is how you will not succeed because you will then
think you no longer need to study and work to get good grades if you just assume you ll be perfect. I

Analysis Of Frederick Douglass s World Literature
Jenifer E. Forrest Leslie LovensteinWorld Literature from 1650 to the Present Online 26
November 2014 Frederick Douglass: From Chains to Podium When a man grows up as an
untaught slave in the southern eighteenth century, he has no other ambitions than to be free. But
for Frederick Douglass, freedom was merely step one. Douglass began his life on a plantation
owed from the moment he arrived. He was not destined to stay put there. Born in (what he can
come close to) 1818, he began life out as a man in chains but ended up a respected wordsmith, but
still apologetic for his short comings. Douglass learned how to read, write, and give speeches; he
influenced a nation for changes among writers today; and he had different approaches to the era
he lived in, but knew he wanted change to exist among all. These things were needed to occur in
order for the slavery and African American society to be recognized as equals among all. His wit
was not small nor was his leadership not seen as defiance. Each step of his journey, brought him
to a different place where he faced a challenge that could not have been met any other way, but
with strength and education where he was successful in obtaining. Douglass was not only a
speaker, but was an author of his time. Many colleagues wrote of him and his life even after he
passed away. In Douglass works he spoke of his ignorance and blunders, but continued to sow his
good seed. In the book The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas an
