PRESENT CONTINUOUS

PRESENT CONTINUOUS
O “CONTINUOUS” sempre significa alguma ação em progresso e corresponde ao nosso
“-ando, -endo, -indo, -ondo”. Em Português, o usaríamos em frases como:
Minha mãe está trabalhando agora.
Não é possível que eles não perceberam que estão elegendo a pior pessoa!
Ela está competindo contra uma russa.
Beethoven estava compondo quando o serviçal entrou na sala.
O Present Continuous pode ser usado em diferentes circunstâncias, mas ele sempre será expresso
pelo VERB TO BE (am, is ou are) e um VERB +ING.
Atenção à formação dos verbos com o ing:
1. Na maioria dos casos, apenas adicionamos o ing
Work Working - trabalhando
Draw Drawing – desenhando
Learn Learning - aprendendo
2. Quando o verbo termina em e, tiramos o e e adicionamos o ing
Come Coming – vindo, chegando
Have Having – tendo
Write Writing - escrevendo
3. Se um verbo de uma só sílaba termina em “CVC” consoante/vogal/consoante, dobramos
a consoante. Lembre da agência de viagem CVC!
Swim Swimming – nadando
Get Getting – ficando, ganhando, tendo, recebendo…
Stop Stopping - parando
Run Running - correndo
4. Some verbs have irregular ing form
Lie Lying – deitando OU mentindo
Die Dying – morrendo
3
FORMA Present Continuous
[AM / IS / ARE] + [VERB+ing]
EXAMPLES:
I am watching TV.
My father is traveling.
His class is terrible. I am always sleeping in class.
He is quickly learning the language.
NOTE: Quando usamos um advérbio na frase que contém o Present Continuous, eles normalmente vêm
depois do TO BE e antes do verbo principal.
USO 1 AGORA, NESTE MINUTO!!!
Use o Present Continuous para expressar a ideia de algo acontecendo (ou não acontecendo) AGORA, neste
minuto!
EXAMPLES:
You are thinking about traveling to Ohio. They are reading their books.
You are learning English now. They are not watching television.
You are not swimming now. What are you doing?
I am sitting on a chair. Why aren't you doing your homework?
I am not eating.
USO 2 AÇÕES LONGAS EM PROGRESSO AGORA!
O “agora”, dependendo do contexto, pode representar este período da sua vida, esta semana, este mês… é
igualzinho no Português! Posso encontrar com um velho amigo e dizer “eu estou morando no Santo
Antônio” ou “Estou lendo um livro ótimo!”. Não significa AGORA, NESTE MINUTO, mas agora, neste
momento da minha vida.
EXAMPLES: (Todas estas frases podem ser ditas durante um jantar com amigos, por exemplo).
I am studying to become a doctor. I am not reading any books at the moment.
I am not studying to become a dentist. Are you working on any special projects at work?
I am reading the book Tom Sawyer. Aren't you teaching at the UFMG now?
4
USO 3 Futuro
Este é danadinho, porque agora é diferente do Português! Às vezes, falantes da lingual inglesa usam o
Present Continuous para indicar uma ação futura. Neste caso, usualmente a frase vem com uma expressão
de tempo que definirá QUANDO a ação acontecerá.
EXAMPLES:
I am meeting some friends after work. ----------------- Vou encontrar alguns amigos depois do trabalho.
I am not going to the party tonight. -------------------- Eu não vou à festa hoje à noite.
Is he visiting his parents next weekend? --------------- Ele vai visitar os pais fim de semana que vem?
Isn't he coming with us tomorrow? --------------------- Ele não vem conosco amanhã?
