2 – System Analysis and Design
Week 1: Introduction to System Analysis and Design
Department of Cyber Security
University of Port Harcourt
Course Lecturer: Dr. V. L. Giadom
System Analysis and Design (SAD)
•System Analysis and Design is a methodology
used to understand and improve existing systems
or create new ones. It involves identifying
problems, designing solutions, and implementing
systems that enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Importance of SAD in Cybersecurity
•Helps design secure, user-centered systems
•Promotes efficient business processes
•Strengthens communication between developers and
users
•Minimizes system vulnerabilities through early planning
Understanding Information
Systems
•An Information System is a framework that collects,
stores, and processes data to support decision-making.
Examples:
•Transaction Processing Systems (TPS)
•Management Information Systems (MIS)
•Decision Support Systems (DSS)
•Expert Systems
SAD Approaches
Structured Approach:
•Focuses on processes and logic flow
•Uses tools like data flow diagrams
Object-Oriented Approach:
•Models real-world entities as “objects”
•Uses tools like UML (Unified Modeling Language)
Role of the System Analyst
•A system analyst is responsible for analyzing and designing
systems that align with organizational goals.
System Analyst:
✔Bridges communication between users and developers
✔Analyzes business needs
✔Designs system solutions
✔Requires technical, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
Components of a System
•Every system includes the following:
✔Input – Data fed into the system
✔Processing – Manipulating data
✔Output – Useful results or information
✔Feedback – Responses to system performance
✔Environment – External influences
✔Boundaries – Defines system limits
Summary
•SAD is essential for secure, efficient systems
•It’s a core practice in cybersecurity projects
•Analysts use both structured and object-oriented tools
•Understanding system components is foundational
