2.SOFTWARE ARCHITECTURE
2.1. SUPPORTED OPERATING SYSTEMS
The IBM z15 T02 supports a diverse set of operating systems tailored to meet
the needs of enterprise environments, ranging from traditional mainframe
workloads to modern cloud-native applications. The key supported operating
systems include:
- z/OS: A 64-bit mainframe operating system optimized for large-scale
transaction processing, security, and reliability. It is the flagship OS for IBM Z
and supports traditional workloads such as COBOL-based applications as well as
modern APIs.
- z/VM: A hypervisor that allows the hosting of multiple virtual machines,
including Linux and z/OS guests. It provides dynamic resource sharing and high-
performance virtualization.
- Linux on IBM Z: Enables the deployment of open-source applications and
containers using distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES).
- z/VSE: Targeted at customers with traditional batch processing and transaction
requirements. It provides stability and low overhead.
- z/TPF: Designed for high-volume, real-time transaction environments such as
the airline and banking industries.
2.2. VIRTUALIZATION AND LOGICAL PARTITIONING (LPAR)
IBM z15 T02 includes robust virtualization capabilities through its built-in
PR/SM (Processor Resource/System Manager) feature. It supports up to 85
Logical Partitions (LPARs), with each LPAR functioning as an independent
server capable of running its own operating system and workload.
Advanced virtualization is provided through z/VM, which enables the creation of
hundreds or even thousands of virtual servers within a single physical system.
This level of virtualization provides operational flexibility, improved resource
utilization, and support for hybrid cloud environments.
2.3. CONTAINERIZATION AND CLOUD INTEGRATION
The IBM z15 T02 architecture is designed to support containerized workloads
and seamless integration with hybrid and multi-cloud environments. Key
technologies include:
- Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Z: Provides a Kubernetes-based platform for
managing containerized applications across the enterprise.
- Support for Docker containers and cloud-native services, allowing developers
to build and deploy modern applications efficiently.
- Integration with IBM Cloud Pak solutions, enabling AI, automation, and data
services on a secure mainframe foundation.
- Secure and compliant connectivity with public cloud providers through secure
APIs and encrypted communication.
2.4. SOFTWARE MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT TOOLS
The z15 platform is equipped with a suite of tools and frameworks for system
management, application development, and DevOps integration:
- z/OS Management Facility (z/OSMF): A web-based interface for system
configuration, monitoring, and automation.
- IBM Wazi Developer for Red Hat CodeReady Workspaces: Brings modern
development capabilities to z/OS with support for Git, Jenkins, and IDEs.
- IBM z/OS Connect: Allows RESTful APIs to be created and managed on z/OS,
enabling mainframe applications to integrate with mobile and cloud services.
- RACF (Resource Access Control Facility) and IBM zSecure: Comprehensive
tools for security administration, auditing, and compliance.
2.5. LANGUAGE AND APPLICATION SUPPORT
IBM z15 supports a wide array of programming languages and frameworks to
facilitate legacy modernization and innovation:
- Traditional languages such as COBOL, PL/I, and Assembler for mission-
critical legacy applications.
- Modern languages including Java, C/C++, Python, Node.js, and Go for cloud-
native development.
- Full support for APIs, microservices, messaging queues (MQ), and enterprise
service buses (ESB).
- Compatibility with databases such as Db2 for z/OS, IMS, and PostgreSQL on
Linux on Z.
These capabilities make the IBM z15 T02 a powerful platform for both
maintaining critical existing systems and developing innovative, scalable
enterprise applications.
