1.0 INTRODUCTION
Footing is one of the most essential structural components in a building, responsible
for transferring the load of the entire structure to the ground safely and effectively.
It is the base of the foundation that distributes the load over a large area, helping to
prevent excessive settlement or structural failure.
In our field visit, we observed different types of footing used in construction,
especially isolated and combined footings, and studied their reinforcement detailing,
placement, and concreting processes. Understanding the practical aspects of footing
construction enhanced our theoretical knowledge and provided us with insights into
how site conditions, soil type, and structural load influence footing design and
execution.
2.0 OBJECTIVE

1. To observe and understand the practical construction process of footings on-

site.
2. To study the type, size, and reinforcement detailing of footings used in the
structure.
3. To analyze the importance of soil condition and site layout in footing design.
4. To correlate theoretical knowledge of structural design (as per IS/NS codes)
with on-site practices and recognize common challenges and solutions.

4.0 TYPES OF FOOTING ON SITE:

1. ISOLATED FOOTING
Isolated footing, is a type of shallow foundation used to support individual
columns. It spreads the load from the column to the ground and is typically
square, rectangular, or circular in shape. This type of footing is used when
columns are spaced apart and loads are moderate. It is reinforced with steel bars
to resist bending and shear forces.

2. COMBINED FOOTING

Combined footing is a type of foundation that supports two or more columns

using a single-footing slab. It is used when columns are closely spaced and
individual footings would overlap, or when the load from one column is near a
property boundary, preventing symmetrical footing placement. Combined
footings are usually rectangular or trapezoidal in shape and are reinforced to
handle the combined load. They help distribute structural loads evenly to the soil
and are designed based on load intensity, column spacing, and soil conditions.

6.0 CONCLUSION

The field visit gave us practical exposure to the reinforcement detailing of

footing, helping us connect classroom theory with on-site construction. Observing
the placement of longitudinal reinforcement, Bar bending of column, Lapping of
rebar, and the importance of proper detailing, structural safety, and workmanship.
