Setting:

1. At Adeline and Ariel’s home; In Scott Academy

2. October 19th (Ms. Mayfitch’s birthday)

Characters:

MS. MAYFITCH (Ms. Mayfitch): The English Science teacher in Scott Academy;
A little stern, but mostly kind; Her favorite sentence is “Chatty chatty chatty,
blah blah blah”.

ADELINE (Adeline): The twin sister of Ariel; Kind and intelligent; Likes to
dream up weird but interesting ideas.

ARIEL (Ariel): The twin sister of Adeline; Kind and a little bit shy; Not as
“brave” as her sister

NOLAN (Nolan): A student in class K8; A good student in Ms. Mayfitch’s eyes;
Works very hard and likes to help others with studying.

WILLY (Willy): A student in class K8; Naughty but always respects other
students and teachers.

Synopsis:

October 19th is Ms. Mayfitch’s birthday and the students in K8 want to give
Ms. Mayfitch a big surprise. They pretend that they’re missing, causing Ms.
Mayfitch to notice their absence. In the gym, students are decorating and
getting ready for the “party”, but Ms. Mayfitch becomes more worried, and
decides to look for them…
 SCENE 1

At ADELINE’s home, ADELINE and ARIEL are eating breakfast while playing
on their phones. The stage light goes up. ADELINE and ARIEL face the
audience, with a table on stage center.

ARIEL (She turns her head towards ADELINE, and holding up her the mobile
phone screen for ADELINE to see): Why are some students in our K8 group
chat saying that today is very important? Today is October 19 th, right?
Nothing important!

ADELINE: I have no idea. Let me think… Oh! Today is Ms. Mayfitch’s birthday!
That’s why!

ARIEL: Oh no… how did I forget! I should have planned to give her a birthday
gift, but… It’s too late…

ADELINE: Talking about gifts, I have an idea… (She smiles a bit, leans over
and whispers in Ariel’s ear)

ARIEL and ADELINE both type on their phones, and then get their backpacks
and leave for the school bus.

ARIEL & ADELINE exit.

SCENE 2

In Scott Academy, students of K8 are studying English Science. They are in

the school lab, studying the Periodic Table. Students are taking notes while
the teacher is talking and pointing at the whiteboard. On the bright stage,
students face the audience while MS. MAYFITCH has her back towards the
audience.

(Computer screen is being shared on the big screen) ARIEL types into the
group chat “Guys, Adeline and I will go first, then you will come, okay? ”
NOLAN replies in the chat, “Ms. Mayfitch will ask someone to find you guys,
just wait there. ” ADELINE responds, “Where? In the gym? ” Others replied
“Okay, we will find you guys! ”

ADELINE glances at Ariel, and points to the exit of the lab (stage right)
secretly.

ADELINE: Ms. Mayfitch!

MS. MAYFITCH: Yes, Adeline?

ADELINE: I forgot to bring my notebook. Can I go to the locker to grab it?

MS. MAYFITCH: Okay, be back in two minutes, quick!

MS. MAYFITCH turns to look at the whiteboard. While she’s not looking,
ADELINE pulls ARIEL’s hand and runs out from the lab quickly. They exit from
stage right, and runs offstage. During their conversation, MS. MAYFITCH and
the students get away the “classroom” props.

MS. MAYFITCH and the other students exit from left stage.

ARIEL (Offstage) : But the surprise…

ADELINE: Shush! Let’s go to the gym!

ARIEL and ADELINE tiptoe to the first floor, then run to the gym. They run
from the center of offstage to the room exit on the left, then to the right of
offstage. From offstage, they run to the stage and run from the stage right to
stage left. The stage light dims a bit.

ADELINE: Phew! That’s so tiring! Let’s get started…

ARIEL: Okay… Hope Ms. Mayfitch won’t notice for the whole period!

ADELINE & ARIEL exit.

SCENE 3

In the lab, MS. MAYFITCH finds out that the two girls are missing, then asks a
student to find them. Stage light is bright again.

MS. MAYFITCH: Why are these students taking so long? You! Go to the 2 nd
floor and find them! Quickly! (She points to Nolan)

NOLAN(He hesitantly gets up): Okay, but if they’re not there…

MS. MAYFITCH (She points to stage left): Just go! Chatty, chatty, chatty, blah
blah blah! (She rolls her eyes) Quick!

NOLAN exits.

After 10 minutes, MS. MAYFITCH is worried that the students are not here,
and begins to walk back and forth in front of the whiteboard. Stage light is
bright in the same way.
MS. MAYFITCH: Are they in danger? (She talks to herself) Students, can you
give me your attention? (Use a tone of yelling)

Students stop their chat, and look up

MS. MAYFITCH: Students! Adeline, Ariel, and Nolan… they’re all missing! We
need to find them. Let’s go!

STUDENTS: We can go? We’re not having classes today?

MS. MAYFITCH: I said go!

Students cheer.

MS. MAYFITCH & STUDENTS exits.

SCENE 4

MS. MAYFITCH and the other students have checked each floor, but there’s
no figure of ADELINE, ARIEL, and NOLAN. The students are separated into 3
groups, among which 2 groups are responsible for checking stage left, 1
group for stage right. The stage light is bright.

MS. MAYFITCH: (More worried) How… Where did they go? Ahhh!

After searching every floor, there’s still no figure of them.

MS. MAYFITCH (burst into tears): Where? Where are they?!! Oh my god…

WILLY (points to stage left’s exit): Ms. Mayfitch? We haven’t gone to the
gym! Maybe, they’re in the gym?

MS. MAYFITCH: It’s our last chance. Let’s go.

MS. MAYFITCH & STUDENTS exit.

SCENE 5

ADELINE, ARIEL, and NOLAN get the birthday cake, put it on the ground, and
light the candles. The stage light dims. They are standing on stage center.

ADELINE: It looks great! Let’s just wait for Ms. Mayfitch to come.

NOLAN: We’re all in time. Great!

ARIEL: Yeah… Oh, I hear some noises, like steps… Let’s get ready, guys.
With the loud noise, MS. MAYFITCH opens the door. ARIEL switches the light
off. Only the fire on the candles is bright.

MS. MAYFITCH: What? What is that?

STUDENTS (all together): Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you,

happy birthday to Ms. Mayfitch, happy birthday to you!

The students cheer.

ARIEL: Ms. Mayfitch, have a wish, today is your birthday!

In the cheer and laughter of the students, MS. MAYFITCH closes her eyes and
has a wish, then blows out the candles. ADELINE switches on the light again.
The stage light is brighter. ADELINE takes off the candles, then smashes the
cake on MS. MAYFITCH’s face.

Students and MS. MAYFITCH all laugh.

MS. MAYFITCH: Ahh! (She wipes off some cream on her face.) Thank you all!
This will be my most unforgettable birthday ever after! Hahahahaha! (She
suddenly changes her expression to an evil smile) Now… let’s go back to
class!

STUDENTS: Ehhhhh, this is the worst birthday ever!

STUDENTS and MS. MAYFITCH exit from the front.
