ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS
Part - B
(5 x 16 = 80 Marks)
11 i. Elaborate on the different types of cutting tool materials. 10 CO1/K2
ii. A cutting tool made of HSS gave a tool life of 50 min when 6 CO1/K2
operated at a speed of 200m/min. At what speed should the
tool have to be operated to have a tool life of 2hrs 15 min.
Assume n = 0.185.
(or)
12 i. With a neat sketch explain the main parts in a single point 10 CO1/K2
cutting tool.
ii. A cutting tool, cutting at 22m/min, gave a life of 1 hour 6 CO1/K3
between regrinds when operating on roughening cuts with ISRO
mild steel. What will be its probable life when engaged in light
finishing cuts?
13 i. Calculate the cutting speed for a tool to have a tool life of 6 CO1/K3
160min. The same tool had a life of 9min when cutting at GATE
250m/min. Take n = 0.22 in the Taylor’s tool life equation. 2012
ii. What is meant by tool wear? Explain at least four parameters 10 CO1/K2
that influence tool wear.
(or)
A
14 i. Describe about the role and properties of cutting fluids in 10 CO1/K2
machining.
ii. A carbide tool with a mild steel work piece was found to give 6 CO1/K3
life of 2 hours while cutting at 48m/min. If n = 0.27, determine GATE
the tool life if the same tool is used at a speed of 20% higher 2014
than the previous one.
15 i. Explain about the construction and working of capstan and 10 CO2/K2
turret lathe.
ii. Calculate the time required for one complete cut on a piece 6 CO2/K3
of work having 250 mm long and 40 mm diameter. The RRB
cutting speed is 32 m/min and the feed is 0.4 mm/rev.
(or)
16 i. Explain about the different methods by which taper can be 10 CO2/K2
performed on a lathe.
ii. The following data is applicable for a turning operation. The 6 CO2/K3
length of a job is 900mm, diameter of the job is 200mm, feed GATE
rate is 0.25mm/rev and the optimum cutting speed is 2016
300m/min. Calculate the machining time.
17 i. With a neat sketch explain the function of a three jaw and 10 CO2/K2
four jaw chuck.
ii. List the different types of work holding devices used in lathe. 6 CO2/K1
NPTEL
(or)
18 i. Elaborate on the major parts in an engine lathe with a neat 10 CO2/K2
sketch.
ii. List the merits and demerits of an engine lathe. 6 CO2/K1
NPTEL
19 i. With a neat sketch explain the construction and working of a 10 CO3/K2
radial drilling machine.
ii. List the different types of drilling machines that are currently 6 CO3/K2
in use.
