Question M CO
No.
1. For the magnetic circuit shown in Fig. 1, determine the current required to 10 CO
establish a flux density of 0.5 T in the air-gap. Thickness of the iron core is 1
2 cm and its relative permeability is 5000.
Fig. 1
2. A ring is composed of two sections. The cross section area is 0.002 m 2 for 10 CO
each section. The mean arc lengths are la = 0.4 m and l b = 0.2 m. An air 1
gap length of 0.2 mm is cut in the ring. µ r for sections a and b are 4000 and
2000 respectively. Flux in the air gap is 0.55 mWb. Find (i) mmf, (ii)
exciting current if the coil has 200 turns, (iii) reluctance of the sections.
3. A steel ring has a mean diameter of 20 cm, a cross section of 25 cm 2 and a 10 CO
radial air-gap of 0.8 mm cut across it. When excited by a current of 1 A 1
through a coil of 1000 turns wound on the ring core, it produces an air-gap
flux of 1 mWb. Neglect leakage and fringing. Calculate
i) Relative permeability of steel and
ii) Total reluctance of the magnetic circuit
4. The core loss (hysteresis + eddy current loss) for a given specimen of 10 CO
magnetic material is found to be 1000 W at 50 Hz. Keeping the flux density 1
constant, the frequency of the supply is raised to 80 Hz resulting in a core
loss of 3500 W. Compute separately hysteresis and eddy current losses at
both the frequencies.
