LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 9
School: SERAPION C. BASALO MEMORIAL Grade Level: 9
COLLEGES, INC.
Teacher: Learning SCIENCE
NELLY ROSE C. MORTIZ Area:
Date: AUGUST 13, 2024 Quarter: 1st
11:10AM-11:55AM
Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of how the different structures
of the circulatory and respiratory systems work together to transport oxygen-rich blood and
nutrients to the different parts of the body; the prevention, detection, and treatment of
diseases affecting the circulatory and respiratory systems.
Performance Standards: The learners shall be able to conduct an information dissemination
activity on effective ways of taking care of the respiratory and circulatory systems based on
data gathered from the school or local health workers.
Learning Competency: The learners should be able to explain how the respiratory and
circulatory systems work together to transport nutrients, gases, and other molecules to and
from the different parts of the body (S9LT-la-b-26).
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to:
a. differentiate the three types of circulation;
b. appreciate respiratory and circulatory systems working together to sustain life; and
c. arrange the proper sequence of blood flow in the heart.

II. Learning Procedures:
a. Preliminaries
- Prayer (1 minute)
- Classroom Management (2 minutes)
- Checking of Attendance (1 minute)
1. ELICIT (Review) (5 minutes)
Reviewing the concept learned from the previous lesson.
Guide questions:
1. What are the major parts of the circulatory system?
2. What are the 4 chambers of the heart?
3. Differentiate veins from artery.
2. ENGAGE (Motivation) (5 minutes)
Activity: "Circulation Simon Says"
Instructions:
The teacher will facilitate a game of "Simon Says" with a twist—it’s all about
circulation.
The teacher will give commands related to the circulatory system.
COMMANDS:
1. “Simon says, touch your heart!” (students touch their chest)
2. “Simon says, breathe deeply like your lungs are filling with air!” (students take a
deep breath)
3. “Simon says, pump your arms like your blood is moving through your body!”
(students pump their arms up and down)
4. “Touch your head like blood is reaching your brain!” (students should only do this
if you say "Simon says" first)
As you play, briefly mention what each action represents:
The heart pumping blood.
Lungs oxygenating blood.
Blood circulating to different parts of the body.
Question: What do you think happens inside your bodies that makes these actions
possible?

3. EXPLORE (10 minutes)
Activity: "Heartbeat Countdown"
Instructions:
1. Heartbeat Simulation:
- Ask students to place two fingers on their wrist or neck to feel their pulse.
- Have them close their eyes and focus on the beating of their heart for a few
seconds.
- Ask,
- Let students share their thoughts, guiding them to the idea that their heart is
moving blood through their body.
3. Heartbeat Countdown:
- Explain that in just one minute, their heart will beat around 60-100 times,
depending on their pulse.
- Ask students to stand up, and then count down from 10 to 1 together, imagining
that each count represents a heartbeat pumping blood through their body.
Conclude by telling students that in the next part of the lesson, they'll explore the
different paths this blood takes as it moves through their bodies.
4. EXPLAIN (10 minutes)
Analysis:
1. What do you think is happening inside your body every time your heart beats?
2. Can you explain this phenomenon?
3. What do you think is the pathway of the blood’s circulation?
Abstraction:
TYPES OF CIRCULATION
Circulating blood follows two separate pathways that meet at the heart. These pathways are
called pulmonary and systemic circulation.
All of your blood travels through both of these pathways.

The Respiratory and Circulatory systems working together
Every cell in your body needs nutrients and oxygen to function, but it also needs to
get rid of waste products.
The circulatory system transports blood and other materials. It carries essential
supplies to the cells and extracts their wastes. The organization of the blood vessels in the
circulatory system also keeps oxygen-poor blood from mixing with oxygen-rich blood.
While in respiratory system, gas exchange takes place. You can think of it as a supply
warehouse where the blood can load up oxygen (O2) and expel carbon dioxide (CO2). The
lungs of the respiratory system are the only place in your body where gases in the blood are
exchanged with gases from the atmosphere.
The respiratory and circulatory systems work closely together to maintain
homeostasis in the face of constant change. Every time you exercise, lie down to rest, or
simply stand up, you change your needs for oxygen and nutrients. As a result, your heart
speeds up or slows down and you breathe faster or slower, depending on your activity.

5. ELABORATE (15 minutes)
Group Activity: “Go with the flow!”
Below is a simplified path of the blood flow inside our body. You are asked to
identify first the parts of the heart indicated by A-D. Also, name the two arrows labelled as E
and F which represents the pathways. By looking at the diagram, fill in the blanks on How
blood flows through the heart. Write your answer on the space provided.
How blood flows through the heart?
Blood from the body travels into the (A)_________________, moves into the
(C)_______________, and is finally pushed into the lungs in the pulmonary
(E)________________. The blood then picks up oxygen and travels back to the heart into
the (B)_______________ through the pulmonary (F)________________. Then it travels
through to the (D)__________________ and exits the body through the aorta.

6. EVALUATE “Arrange It!” (6 minutes)
Arrange the steps in the heart’s action as it pumps blood by writing 1 (being the first) –
8 (being the last)
______ Oxygen-rich blood enters the left atrium from the lungs.
______ Blood from the right ventricle goes to the lungs to pick up oxygen.
______ At the same time, oxygen-poor blood enters the right atrium.
______ Blood is squeezed into the ventricles.
______ The ventricles contract.
______ The heart muscle relaxes.
______ At the same time, blood from the left ventricle goes to the body to supply it with
oxygen.
______ The heart muscle contracts.
7. EXTEND (5 minutes)
In your Science notebook.
After going through all the activities, reflect on the key concepts discussed by answering the
following questions. Answers will be graded using the rubrics below.
1. How does blood get oxygen?

_____________________________________________________________
2. Why should the respiratory system need to respond to the activities of the
circulatory system?
