NOTES (2024-2025)
SUBJECT: SCIENCE (PHYSICS) Class: VII
CHAPTER: 3 HEAT (PART 1)
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING :
1. What is temperature?
Ans: The measure of degree of hotness or coldness of a body is known as
temperature.
2. What is a thermometer?
Ans: An instrument which measures temperature.
3. Name the two common scales in which temperature is usually measured?
Ans: Celsius scale (0 C) and Fahrenheit scale ( 0 F)
4. What is the characteristic feature of a mercury clinical thermometer?
Ans: It has a kink to hold the mercury for accurate temperature reading.
This kink does not allow the mercury to fall of its own.
5. Why a clinical thermometer should not be washed in hot water?
Ans: The hot water will increase the mercury level more than 420C which will
break the thermometer.
6. What is the value of the normal body temperature?
Ans: 370 C
7. Write the range of laboratory thermometer.
Ans: -10°C to 110°C
8. What is the range of a clinical thermometer?
Ans: 35°C to 42°C
9. What precautions will you observe while using a clinical thermometer?
Ans:
Wash before and after use with the help of an antiseptic solution.
Before use, make sure the mercury level is
below 35 0 C
Read the thermometer along the line of sight.
Handle with care.
Don’t hold the bulb while reading it.
Never use it for measuring the temperatures of other objects other than
human body.
10. Why clinical thermometer ranges from 35oC to 42oC?
Ans: The normal temperature of human body is 37°C.The temperature of
human body normally does not go below 35oC or above 42oC. That is the
reason a clinical thermometer has the range from 35oC to 42oC.
11. Why does the mercury not fall or rise in a clinical thermometer when
taken out of the mouth?
Ans: Kink prevents mercury level from falling on its own.
12. Why is mercury preferred in thermometers?
i) It does not stick to the glass tube.
ii) It expands on providing heat to it.
iii) Lower freezing point and higher boiling point.
iv) When it expands, it can be noticed easily.
13. Why is the thermometer kept under the tongue?
Ans: The intense heat of our body temperature is sensed under our tongue.
So placing the thermometer under the tongue gives us the true temperature
of our body.
14.Can you measure the body temperature by placing the thermometer at
some other place other than under the tongue?
Ans: Yes, the temperature of our body can also be measured by placing the
thermometer under the armpit, ear, etc.,
15. Why is it advised not to hold the thermometer by its bulb while reading it?
Ans:
It is advised not to hold the thermometer bulb while reading it as the level of
mercury increases from the actual reading by our body temperature.
16. You may have noticed that a few sharp jerks are given to clinical
thermometer before using it. Why is it done so?
Answer:
Jerks are given to clinical thermometer before using it to settle down the
mercury level below normal temperature so that the measurement taken of a
body be accurate.
17. What precautions should we take while reading a clinical thermometer?
A clinical thermometer should not be used for any object other than the
human body. There are some following precautions which are to be
observed while reading a clinical thermometer.
1. Wash the clinical thermometer before and after using preferably with an
antiseptic solution.
2. Be ensure that the mercury level before using the clinical thermometer
should be below 35°C.
3. The clinical thermometer should be read by keeping the level of mercury
along the line of sight.
4. While reading the clinical thermometer, it should never be held by the
bulb.
5. The clinical thermometer should be carefully handled.
18. Briefly explain the maximum and minimum thermometers.
Answer:
Maximum and minimum thermometers are the special thermometers which
automatically record the maximum and minimum temperature of the day.
