2. BENEFICIATION A.C. INDUCTION MOTOR & TRANSFORMER:-
2.1 Introduction:
1. Both transformers and induction motor both are the most extensively used electrical
machines in practice. The transformer is an electromagnetic static machine while
the induction motor is an electro-mechanical energy conversion device. Since the
induction motor and transformer are functionally quite similar because both work
on the
“Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction”, therefore it is required to understand
the differences between them.
2. The Power Flow of the Beneficiation Process of A. C. Induction Motor &
Transformer is given below.

2.2 Working:-
An AC Induction Motor works by using alternating current (AC) to create a
rotating magnetic field (RMF) that induces a current in the rotor:
1. Stator windings :
AC voltage is applied to the stator windings, creating a rotating magnetic field
around the stator. The polarity of the magnetic field changes with each half
cycle of the supply, causing the field to rotate.
2. Rotor conductors :
The rotor conductors are stationary and cut through the rotating magnetic
field, which induces an electromotive force (EMF) in the rotor. This is
known as the rotor induced EMF.

2.3 Application:-
Industrial Applications. Three-phase induction motors are used to drive
various machines and equipment for manufacturing purposes. These
machines and equipment include lifts, conveyors, exhaust fans, grinding
machineries, carton sealers, label machineries, mixers, food processing
machineries, packaging machineries, etc ...
Transformers are used in a variety of applications, including power generation,
transmission and distribution, lighting, audio systems, and electronic
equipment
2.3.1 Important:-
Important Induction Motor :-
Induction motors, also known as asynchronous motors, are the
most commonly used type of motor in residential, commercial,
and industrial settings. They are important because they are
reliable, economical, and have many advantages, including:
GUJARAT TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY 11
Simplicity:
Induction motors have few basic components, making them easy to
produce and maintain. They also have simple construction and
require less frequent maintenance.
Durability:
Induction motors can operate for long periods without
maintenance because they have few mechanical contact points.
Adaptability:
Induction motors can be adapted to meet different application
requirements for size, power, and speed.
Low cost:
Induction motors are relatively inexpensive.
Important Transformer :-
Efficiency:
Transformers can transfer electricity more efficiently than other
methods, like power lines, which results in lower energy costs.
Safety:
Transformers are safer than other methods of electrical power
distribution because they don't rely on high-voltage power lines,
which can be dangerous.
Reliability:
Transformers can last for decad

3. ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR Insulation of Motor :-
3.1 Introduction Insulation Induction Motor:
The Surface temperature of the motor is typically 30°C lower than it is
at the windings. So if we look at a Class F insulated motor which will
be happy running at 155°C and then subtract 30°C, we get a surface
temperature of 125°C. This doesn't necessarily mean it is running too
hot or operating improperly (by the way, we strongly advise against
touching anything that is 125°C). To put it simply, today's motors can
simply be too hot to handle, even when all is working as it should be.
Induction Motor Insulation Temperature
Class: Y 90 Degree C
Class: A 105 Degree C
Class: E 120 Degree C
Class: B 130 Degree C
Class: F 155 Degree C
Class: H 180 Degree C
Class: C >180 Degree C

3.2 Introduction Insulation Transformer:
Transformers use insulation to insulate their coils and cores, as well as the
space between the core and windings and between each winding turn and the
tank. The insulation is designed to withstand high voltage levels, moisture,
pollution, and other harsh environments. It also acts as an electrical insulator
and coolant to dissipate heat losses.
Proper insulation is essential to a transformer's long-term performance and
reliability, and can help extend its life and prevent costly outages. Well-
insulated transformers can last for decades without significant degradation in
performance or reliability, which can lead to reduced downtime and
maintenance costs. Insulation also ensures the safety of the transformer by
preventing electrical faults and reducing the risk of harm to personal and
equipment.

4. INTRODUCTION TO VFD (Variable Frequency Drive):-
4.1 Introduction:
A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is an electronic device that controls the
speed and torque of an AC motor by adjusting the frequency and voltage of the
power supplied to it.
It's also known by other names like adjustable-frequency drive (AFD), variable-
voltage/variable-frequency (VVVF) drive, and variable speed drive (VSD).
GUJARAT TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY 17
4.2 Working:
1. Converts AC power to variable frequency and voltage:
VFDs take a standard AC power supply and convert it into a variable frequency and
voltage waveform that is then fed to the motor.
2. Controls motor speed:
By adjusting the frequency, the VFD controls the speed of the AC motor. Lower
frequency results in lower motor speed, and higher frequency results in higher
motor speed.
3.Provides smooth motor operation:
VFDs enable smooth starting, stopping, and speed changes of the motor, reducing
mechanical stress and extending the motor's lifespan.
4.Improves energy efficiency:
By matching the motor speed to the load requirements, VFDs can significantly
reduce energy consumption compared to running the motor at full speed all the
time.
GUJARAT TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY 18
4.3 Appliction:-
1. HVAC Systems:
VFDs are commonly used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)
systems to control the speed of fans and pumps, optimizing airflow and temperature
control while reducing energy costs.
They can be used in both commercial and residential settings.
2. Pumps:
VFDs are essential for controlling the speed of pumps in various applications like
water and wastewater treatment, oil and gas, and building automation.
They allow for precise flow rate control, reduce energy consumption, and minimize
wear and tear on the pumps.
3. Conveyor Systems:
VFDs are used in conveyor systems to control the speed of belts, allowing for
efficient material handling and packaging.
They enable adjustments based on production needs, reducing product damage and
optimizing throughput.
4. Cranes and Hoists:
VFDs are used to control the speed of motors in cranes and hoists, ensuring smooth
acceleration and deceleration for safer and more efficient lifting operations.
5. Compressors:
VFDs are used in compressors to adjust motor speed based on demand, reducing
energy consumption and wear on the compressor.
6. Machine Tools:
VFDs are used in various machine tools like CNC machines to control spindle speeds
and feed rates, improving machining accuracy and extending tool life.
7. Extrusion Machines:
In the plastics and rubber industries, VFDs control the speed of extruders, ensuring
uniform material flow and product quality.
8. Other Applications:
VFDs are also used in centrifuges, separators, mixers, agitators, escalators, and
moving walkways, among others.
