Chapter 1

Introduction

Determining the quality of a water is crucial to survival. Even though

water is abundant, the pollutants that pollute the waters are ever so high

making drinking water more valuable and precious to mankind. These

pollutants in waters like industrial waste, sewage and wastewater, agricultural

runoff (pesticides and fertilizers), oil spills, and heavy metals are the main

causes of pollution to the waters. Thus, a device is needed to analyze and

quantify the quality of water which is an IoT-Based Monitoring System for

Local Water Quality.

IoT-Based Monitoring System for Local Water Quality

The IoT-Based Monitoring System for Local Water Quality is a type of

system that detects and differentiate the chemical compounds inside of the

liquid then quantifies it unto a sensor to be monitored.

Components of IoT-Based Monitoring System for Local Water Quality

1. Sensors

 PH Sensor - A pH sensor is one of the most essential tools that’s typically

used for water measurements. This type of sensor can measure the

amount of alkalinity and acidity in water and other solutions.

 Temperature Sensor - measures the water's temperature, which is a

crucial parameter for assessing water quality. The temperature sensor

data, along with other sensor readings like pH and turbidity, is transmitted

wirelessly to a central platform for analysis and monitoring.

 Dissolved Oxygen (DO) sensor - Measures the amount of oxygen

present in the water, important for aquatic life.

 Turbidity sensor - Measures the cloudiness or haziness of the water,

indicating the presence of suspended particles.

 Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) sensor - Measures the total amount of

dissolved substances in the water.

 Conductivity sensor - Measures the ability of water to conduct electricity,

which is related to the concentration of dissolved ions.

2. Micro-controller and Communication

 Microcontroller (e.g., Arduino, ESP32) - Processes the sensor data and

manages communication with the cloud platform.

 Wi-Fi, LoRaWAN, or cellular module - Enables wireless data

transmission to the cloud.

3. Cloud Platform and Data Analysis

 Cloud storage - Stores the sensor data for historical analysis and

reporting.

 Data visualization - Provides dashboards for real-time monitoring and

analysis of water quality parameters.

 Alerting system - Sends notifications when water quality parameters

exceed predefined thresholds.

4. System Architecture

 Sensors are deployed in the water source (e.g., rivers, lakes, wells).

 Sensors transmit data to the micro-controller, which processes and sends

it to the cloud.

 The cloud platform provides real-time monitoring, historical data analysis,

and alerting capabilities.
