CBSE class 12 Physics Investigatory Project Proposal
Project Title: Studying the Factors Affecting the Strength
of an Electromagnet
1.Introduction:
An electromagnet is a type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by an electric
current. The strength of an electromagnet depends on several factors, such as the number of
coils, the current passing through the wire, the type of material used for the core, and its shape.
Understanding these factors is crucial in applications ranging from electric motors to magnetic
levitation systems.
2.Objective
1. To study how the noumber of coilturns affect's the strength of an electromagnet.
2. To calculate the efficiency of the solar panel under varying conditions.
3. To analyze how factors like angle of incidence and shadow affect the output.
3.Materials Required
4. Insulated copper wire
5. Iron nails (for the core)
6. Steel rod (optional, for comparison)
7. Power supply or battery
8. Ammeter
9. Switch
10. Paper clips or small iron objects (for testing strength)
11. Variable resistor (for current control)
12. Stopwatch and ruler
13. Notebook for observation
4.Hypothesis
Increasing the number of turns in the coil or increasing the current flowing through it will
enhance the strength of an electromagnet. The core material will also significantly impact
magnetic strength.
5.Methodology
1. Wind a fixed number of turns of copper wire around an iron nail to form an electromagnet.
2. Connect the coil to a power source through a switch and ammeter.
3. Gradually increase current using the variable resistor and note how many paper clips the
electromagnet can attract at each current level.
4. Repeat the experiment by changing
14. The number of turns (e.g., 20, 40, 60)
2. The core material (iron vs. steel)
5. Record all observations and compare the results.
6.Expected Outcome
The project should confirm that:
15. Strength of an electromagnet increases with current and number of turns.
2. Iron is a better core material than steel due to its higher magneti permeability and
lower hysteresis loss.
7.Conclusion
16. Designing efficient electromagnets for industrial and medical use.
2. Understanding core principles behind electric motors, transformers, and inductors.
3. Demonstrates how electromagnetism is used in everyday electrical appliances.
