VIBGYOR HIGH
Aim: - (a) To determine relative density of a solid using a spring balance.
(b) To determine relative density of a liquid using a spring balance.
Apparatus: Spring balance, Beaker, The given solid, oil, water
PROCEDURE :-
(i) Check that spring balance reading is zero when no weight is suspended from the
hanger .If not, note the zero-reading.
(ii) Suspend the solid from the hanger of the spring balance by thread. Weight of solid
should be more than half the range of the spring balance, in order to get accurate
result.
(iii) Note the reading of the spring balance with the solid suspended. Subtract the zero-
reading to obtain weight(w1) of the solid.
(iv) Now immerse the solid into the water in the beaker. It should not touch the walls of the
beaker. Not more than a centimeter of thread should dip in water, so that water
displaced by it is negligible.
1
(v) Note the reading spring balance with the solid immersed in water and calculate the
weight(w2) of solid when it is immersed in water.
(vi) Raise the spring balance to pull the solid out of water. Wipe it dry and check that
reading of the balance as taken in step (iii) above with the solid suspended, is restored.
(vii) Now immerse the solid into the liquid in the beaker. Again it should not touch the walls
of the beaker. Note the reading of the spring balance and calculate the weight
(w3) of solid when it is immersed in the liquid.
(viii) Now the loss of weight on immersing the solid in water is w1- w2. Similarly loss of weight
on immersing it in the liquid is w 1 – w3. Thus, calculate
OBSERVATION-
Weight of solid suspended in air (w 1) =…………………..gf.
Weight of solid suspended and immersed in water (w 2) =…………………..gf.
Weight of solid suspended and immersed in liquid (w 3) =…………………..gf.
Now, put the values of w1, w2 and w3 in the following formula and find the values,
w1
Rd solid =
w1 − w2
w1 − w3
Rd liquid =
w1 − w2
CONCLUSION /RESULT-

R.D of given liquid =…………………………..
