SECTION E
Q37 to Q39 are case-based / data-based questions with 3 short sub-parts
Internal choice is provided in one of these sub-parts
Q37 CASE BASED ( There is an internal choice in sub-part 37(c) ) (4)

There are some plants which do not have chlorophyll. They cannot
synthesise food. Like humans and animals such plants depend on the food
produced by other plants. They use the heterotrophic mode of nutrition.
We see a yellow wiry branched structure twining around the stem and
branches of a tree. This is a plant called Cuscuta (Amarbel). It does not
have chlorophyll. It takes ready-made food from the plant on which it is
climbing. The plant on which it climbs is called the host. Since it deprives
the host of valuable nutrients, Cuscuta is called the parasite.

(a) What is the function of chlorophyll in leaves?

(b) Give an example of a parasitic plant.
(c) What are heterotrophs? Also, what is the mode of nutrition of humans and other animals?
OR
(c) There are some plants which do not have chlorophyll. How do they survive and from where do they derive
nutrition?
Q38 CASE BASED (There is an internal choice in sub-part 38(c) ) (4)
A clinical thermometer is a specialised device used to measure the body temperature of humans. Unlike regular
thermometers, clinical thermometers have a narrow range, usually from 35°C to 42°C (or 94°F to 108°F), which
covers the typical range of human body temperatures. They consist of a long, thin glass tube with a bulb at one
end that contains mercury. When placed under the tongue or in the armpit, the heat from the body causes the
liquid in the bulb to expand and rise up the tube. The temperature at which the liquid stabilises indicates the
person's body temperature. It has a kink near the bulb. It prevents mercury level from falling on its own.
(a) Which thermometer is used for measurement of temperature of the human body?
(b) Which metal is used in the bulb of thermometer?
(c) Why does the mercury not fall or rise in a clinical thermometer when taken out of the mouth?

OR
Write two precautions to be taken while using a clinical thermometer.

Q39 CASE BASED ( There is an internal choice in sub-part 39(c) ) (4)

Our stomach contains hydrochloric acid. It helps us to digest food, but too much acid in the stomach causes
indigestion. One day Rahul’s mother after taking a meal felt pain and irritation in her stomach. His father was out
of station. Rahul was an intelligent boy. He remembered his teacher’s statement and to relieve indigestion gave
his mother an antacid such as a milk of magnesia which contains magnesium hydroxide. It neutralises the effect
of excessive acid.
(a) What causes acidity or indigestion in the stomach?
(b) Name the base found in Milk of magnesia.
(c) (i)Why is an antacid tablet taken when you suffer from acidity?
(ii)Write the chemical name of baking soda used to treat indigestion.
(c) OR
Write two neutralisation reactions related to daily life situations.
