Introduction:
Good morning, Grade 10- students, and welcome to your English Class.
I am Mary France L. Malto, a BSEd-4 English student teacher. Today I will be your teacher; you
can call me Ma’am France. I hope we can have fun and learn together.
Prayer:
Before we begin, let us pray first.
Let us bow our heads and feel the presence of our almighty God.
Father God, as we start this new day for new learning, we ask for your guidance. Lead us all the
way. May you let us see through your eyes, listen through your ears, and speak with your
mouth. Give us the heart to love and be kind to one another. Please bless our teachers, our
schools, and the students. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Classroom Management:
Before taking the comfort of your seats, kindly look if there are litters of paper under your chairs.
Then, arrange your chairs properly. If everything is settled, you may be seated.
Alright, in this class I only have four rules. The “SKLR”
1. Sit properly.
2. Keep all your gadgets.
3. Listen attentively.
4. Respect each other.
Okay, I hope you are all well today and ready to listen and participate in our class discussion.
Are you ready, class?
Okay. Very good.
Recall
Before we proceed to our lesson proper, may I ask for a volunteer to give us a quick
recapitulation of the topic discussed before this meeting? Anyone, what was your last topic?
Motivation:
Today, we have a fun game that I think you will enjoy. We will be solving a Jigsaw Puzzle.
I know that you are very familiar with this game.
Now, in front of you are puzzle pieces and all you need to do is assemble it. I will give you 1
minute to solve it.
Are you ready?
Great!
You may now start.
Are you done, class?
Okay, so what image does the puzzle reveals?
Congratulation, you solved the puzzle perfectly!
Now, my question is what is your favorite spot in the house?
Okay!
Why did you choose it as your favorite spot?
That’s right!
When we stay at home specially in our favorite spot, we feel comfortable to the point that we
don’t want to leave the spot.
For most of us our home is our comfort zone.
Now, are you familiar with comfort zone class?
It is a place or situation where ma’am where one feels safe or at ease and without stress.
What is comfort zone for you?
Correct.
What or who is/are your comfort zone?
Now, if you will be offered to go into a different and uncertain place, will you go out of your
comfort zone?
Most of us might feel scared because of the uncertainty but we might also feel curious about it.
Presentation of the Lesson:
Now, that is exactly the dilemma of the character in the Chapter 1 excerpt of the novel that we
will read today, which is entitled “The Hobbit” written by J.R.R Tolkien.
Presentation of Objectives:
Here are the objectives for today.
At the end of the 60-minute lesson wherein we will be reading and analyzing the novel written
by J.R.R Tolkein, you are expected, or at least 75% of the class are expected to:

Those words are some of the vocabularies that you will encounter as we read and discuss the
Chapter 1 excerpt of the novel “The Hobbit”. Moreover, the picture will help you in creating a
more vivid images in your mind of the character as well as the setting of the novel.
Abstraction:
Since we already know the meaning of these mystery words from the novel. Let us proceed in
reading the Chapter 1 excerpt of the novel entitled ‘The Hobbit’.
Let us first get to know the author.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien is one of the greatest scholars of the English language. He is known
as the creator of the classic high fantasy works, namely The Hobbit and The Lord of Rings. As
he was studying early English traditions, he started to create his own language and an ancient
world called middle-earth.
Since we already know the author of the novel, let us now proceed to the reading and
discussion of the novel.
Remember, as you read the excerpt that follows, study how the setting suggests the mood or
atmosphere of the story. Analyze also how it defines the character.
Now, let us read the novel simultaneously. I will be the one to read the story in front of you,
however please refer as well to your handout so you can also catch up.
Did you understand the novel?
Okay. To further understand the novel, we will analyze it through the following guide questions.
Who is Bilbo Baggins?
Ma’am, Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit, “a short, human-like person”.
Very good.
Where does he live? Describe his place.
He lives in Bag End. It is described as an expensive hobbit hole with many windows; a large
circular green front and back door, and a large number of rooms; as well as the famously
renowned pantries which supplied foo for many parties or celebration.
How does it reveal the way Bilbo lives his life?
Ma’am, this reveals that Bilbo is living in a comfortable and luxurious life.
Very good.
How does it reveal the way Bilbo lives his life?
That’s correct.
Since we already know Bilbo, let us get to know the other character he encounters.
Who is Gandalf?
Gandalf is a friendly neighborhood wizard. He was known to be “responsible for so many quiet
lads and lasses going off into the blue for mad adventures.”
That is correct.
Why did he visit Bilbo?
Ma’am, he visits Bilbo to invite him on an exciting adventure.
What does Bilbo remember about Gandalf from his childhood?
Bilbo remembers Gandalf as a wonderful storyteller; maker of excellent fireworks and
responsible for many boys and girls going off on adventure.
How did Bilbo react to Gandalf’s offer?
Ma’am, Bilbo firmly declines the invitation even after Gandalf revels his identity to Bilbo and
reminds him of Gandalf’s longtime friendship with the Took family.
Why did he react that way?
Ma’am, because Bilbo does not want to leave the comfort of his home.
Also, he might be scared to go on an adventure since he never experienced it.
In our fast-changing world, who is Bilbo Baggins? What kind of man is he?
In our fast-changing world Bilbo Baggins are the people who lives a comfortable life and never
cares what is happening outside of their comfort zone. He is the kind of man who leaves in his
own little bubble and declines anything that will take him away in this kind of comfort.
Are you like Bilbo Baggins in the excerpt? How do you say so?
That is great that most of you are out going. However, it also understandable that some of us
wants a life that revolves most in the comfort of our homes.
Would you trade your comfort for an uncertain adventure?
Ahmm some of you said yes, others said no.
Why, yes? And for the others why did you say no?
Alright, so most of us might be anxious about the things we are not familiar at all. But remember
class that we should learn to be comfortable on being uncomfortable.
Now, let us practice what you have learned from our discussion.
You will work independently and quietly to complete a setting illustration of Bilbo’s home. Your
illustration needs to have at least one quote that support your drawing choice.
You have 15 minutes to finish your illustration.
Do you have any question or clarification?
If that is the case, then you may now start.
Are you done, class?
Okay.
Who wants to share their artwork to the class?
Before we end this lesson, let us take a last glimpse at our lesson today and reflect on what we
have learned today.
Did you learn something today, class?
Good.
What have you learned?
I have learned that just like Bilbo Baggins I am also afraid to go out of my comfort zone.
Very good.
Is comfort zone an advantage or a disadvantage?
How do you say so?
If all Filipinos are like Bilbo, what do you think will happen to our country?
If all Filipinos will remain on their own comfort zone and declines to participate in any political
movement. We will never become a progressive country.
Our country will not progress, ma’am.
How do you say so?
Very well said!
I know that you are all too young to participate in the coming May election but you can
contribute in the community through youth political movements like SK. Perhaps, most of us
have comfortable beds to sleep with, we eat three times or more per day, we have good Wifi
connection. But, let us have empathize with others who do not have; let us put a good fight and
advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves. I hope you can reflect on the attitude
of Bilbo and remind yourselves to never be like him, who declines to see try new things just
because he was experiencing the comfort that most of us cannot afford.
V. EVALUATION
Instruction: Pretend you are Bilbo and you just gone to bed. You take out a pad and
paper to write in your journal or diary. Write a journal entry based on what just occurred in your
meeting with Gandalf earlier. Be sure to include details from Chapter 1.
VI. ASSIGNMENT
Watch any The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings films. Describe the settings used.
Analyze how these settings match the characters of the story. Write your analysis in a one
whole sheet of paper.
