Mechanical Vibration – Tutorial
1. Explain/Define the following terms:

a) Longitudinal vibration
b) Lateral vibration
c) Torsional vibration
d) Natural Frequency
e) Degree of freedom
f) Resonance
g) Over damped system
h) Under damped system
i) Damping ratio
j) Logarithmic decrement
2. Determine the natural frequency of the spring mass system from D’Alembert
principle.
3. A compound pendulum is suspended from a point O and is free to oscillate. G is the
centre of gravity, m is the mass and k is the radius of gyration about an axis through
the center of gravity G. Determine the equation of motion and equation for natural
frequency of vibration of the system.
4. A pendulum consists of a stiff weightless rod of length ‘l’ carrying a mass ‘m’ on its
end as shown in Figure-1 below. Two springs each of stiffness ‘K’ are attached to
the rod at a distance ‘a’ from the upper end. Determine the frequency for small
oscillations.
5. Find the natural frequency of a system shown in Figure-2. Take K=1000 N/m, M
=10 kg, m=2 kg, R = 50 mm and r = 30 mm.
6. The mass 'm' is hanging from a chord attached to the circular homogeneous disc of
mass 'M' and radius 'R' as shown in Figure-3. The disc is restrained from rotating
by a spring attached at radius 'r' from the center. If the mass is displaced
downwards from the rest position, determine the frequency of oscillations.
7. Derive the expression for natural frequency of free longitudinal vibration through
“Rayleigh’s method”
8. Determine the natural frequency of the system shown in Figure-4.
9. Find the natural frequency of the system shown in Figure-5.. If m, K 1, K2, L are fixed,
find the value of 'b' for which the system will not vibrate.
10. A semi circular disc is suspended above its center as shown in figure-6. Determine
its natural frequency of oscillation.
11. Derive an equation of motion of single degree under damped system.
12. Derive a relation for logarithmic decrement. Explain the significance of this term.
13. A vibrating system is defined by the following parameters: m=3 kg, k=100 N/m,
C=3 N-sec/m. Determine (a) the damping factor (b) the natural frequency of
damped vibration (c) logarithmic decrement (d) the ratio of two consecutive
amplitudes (e) the number of cycles after which the original amplitude is reduced
to 20 percent.
14. The successive amplitudes of vibrations of a vibratory system as obtained under
free vibrations are 0.69, 0.32, 0.19 and 0.099 units respectively. Determine the
damping ratio of the system. If the damping ratio is doubled what would be the
amplitude ratio then?
15. A damped vibrating system consisting of 40 kg mass executes 20 oscillations in 5
sec. The amplitude of vibration decreases to one eighth of the initial value after 8
complete oscillations. Determine:
a) Logarithmic decrement
b) Damping factor
c) Damping co-efficient
d) Spring stiffness
16. In a single degree viscously damped vibrating system, the suspended mass of 16 kg
makes 45 oscillations in 27 seconds. The amplitude of natural vibration decreases
to one fourth of initial value after 5 oscillations. Determine:
a) The logarithmic decrement.
b) The damping factor aand damping coefficient.
c) The stiffness of the spring.
17. What is Force Transmissibility? Why is it importance in mechanical vibrations?
Explain with neat sketch Fr
Frequency response curve of force transmissibility.
transmissibility
18. Derive an expression
sion for force transmissibility.
19. A body of mass 80 kg is suspended from a spring which deflects 20 mm due to the
mass. If the body is subjected to a periodic disturbing force of 700 N and of
frequency equal to 0.63 times the natural frequency, find: Amplitude of forced
vibration, Transmissibility, Dynamic Magnification Factor & Force transmitted to
the support.
