1. What is the acceleration of free fall? 1 Marks
Answer:
If a body falls freely then it will fall with an acceleration which is equal to acceleration due to gravity. Its
value is 9.8m/sec2.
2. What do you mean by force of buoyancy? 1 Marks
Answer:
When a body is completely or partially immersed in a fluid, then the upward thrust acting on the body
is called force of buoyancy.
3. Why does a truck or motor-bus have much wider tyres? 1 Marks
Answer:
A truck or motor bus has wider tyres so that the pressure acting on the road due to weight of the truck
may be small.
4. Why the cutting edge of a knife should be as sharp as possible? 1 Marks
Answer:
The cutting edge of a knife should as sharp as possible so as to have greater pressure even for a
very small applied force for quick action.
5. What is the weight of an object on moon? 1 Marks
Answer:
The weight of an object on moon is 1/6 times its weight on earth.
6. If the earth attracts an apple, why does not an apple attract the earth? 2 Marks
Answer:
The apple does attract the earth. But the mass of the apple is negligibly small compared to that of the
earth. So, we do not see the earth moving towards the apple.

7. Explain why iron nail sinks in water, but a ship made up of iron floats? 3 Marks
Answer:
If we place an iron nail on the surface of water, it sinks. This is because the density of iron is greater
than that of water, so the weight of the nail is more than the up thrust of the water on it. On the other
hand, a ship made of iron does not sink. This is because the ship is hollow and the empty space
contains air which makes the average density of the ship less than that of water. Thus, even with its
small submerged part into water, the weight of the water displaced becomes equal to the total weight of
the ship and hence the ship floats.
8. Distinguish between g and G. 3 Marks
Answer:
‘g’ stands for acceleration due to gravity. It is defined as the acceleration set up in a body while falling
freely under the effect of gravity alone. The value of g changes with height, depth and rotation of the
earth and is zero at the center of the earth. The value of g on the surface of earth is 9.8 m/s 2.
‘G’ stands for universal gravitational constant. It is defined as the force of attraction acting between
two bodies each of unit mass placed unit distance apart. The value of G is constant at all locations. The
value of G is never zero anywhere.
9. The mass of Seema is 45kg. What will be her weight on the surface of the earth? What will be her
weight on the surface of the moon? 2 Marks
Answer:
Given, mass(m) of seema = 45kg
Acceleration due to gravity(ge), on earth = 9.8 m/s2
∴ Weight of Seema on earth ,We = mge = 441 N
Acceleration due to gravity(gm), on moon= 1/6 × (9.8 m/s2)
∴ Weight of Seema on moon,Wm = mgm = 45 × (1/6) × 9.8 = 73.5 N
10. A ball is dropped from the top of a tower 100m high and at the same time another ball is projected
vertically upwards from the ground with a velocity of 25m/sec. Calculate where and when the two
stones will meet. Take g =10m/s2. 5 Marks
Answer:
Let the ball ‘A’ be dropped from the tower.
Its initial velocity u1 = 0
and acceleration a1= + g = + 10 m/s2.
The ball ‘B’ is projected upward with velocity u2= 25 m/s and its acceleration is a2 = – g = –10 m/s2.
Let the two balls meet at point ‘C’ at distance 'y' below from ‘A’. The situation is shown in the figure:
