I. LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
OBJECTIVES
Differentiate uniform and non-uniform circular motion STEM_GP12KIN-Ic-24-25
At the end of the lesson students should be able to:
a. differentiate between uniform and non-uniform circular motion
b. compute quantities associated with circular motion, such as tangential
velocity, centripetal acceleration, tangential acceleration, and radius of
curvature,
c. Recognize the role of circular motion in real-world applications
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. TOPIC: CIRCULAR MOTION
B. REFERENCES: DepEd k-12 curriculum Guide STEM
C. MATERIALS: Laptop, Ppt, white marker
D. VALUES INTEGRATED: Respect Diversity

III. PROCEDURES
A. PREPARATORY ACTIVITY
B. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES
i. DRILL: Boom, clap, pen!
ii. REVIEW: Begin with a quick recap of basic concepts of circular
motion:
Definition of circular motion, Basic terms: radius, velocity,
acceleration
Difference between linear and angular quantities, Use a visual
diagram of an object moving in a circle to highlight uniform vs.
non-uniform motion.

iii. UNLOCKING DIFFICULTIES

 Circular motion
 Radius
 Angular quantities
 Uniform motion
 Non uniform motion

C. MOTIVATION:
Show a short video clip or animation of a Ferris wheel (uniform circular
motion) and a car accelerating around a curved road (non-uniform
circular motion). Ask students:
 What differences do you observe?
 What makes the motion uniform or non-uniform?
Pose the question: "How do these motions relate to real-life
scenarios?"

D. ACTIVITY: #10
"Circular Motion Card Sorting Challenge"
Objective: Students will classify different real-world scenarios as uniform
or non-uniform circular motion.
Materials:
 Set of scenario cards (prepared beforehand) describing various
situations, e.g., a spinning merry-go-round, a roller coaster at a curve, a
satellite orbiting Earth, a car turning on a highway, a cyclist pedaling at
constant speed around a track.
Instructions:
1. Divide students into small groups of 3-4.
2. Distribute scenario cards randomly.
3. Each group reads their scenario and discusses whether the motion is
uniform or non-uniform.
4. They place their card on either the "Uniform" or "Non-Uniform" side of
the classroom.
5. After all groups have sorted, facilitate a class discussion on each
scenario, explaining the key reasons for classification.
6. As an extension, assign each group to calculate the relevant quantities
(e.g., tangential velocity, centripetal acceleration) for their scenario if
data is provided or assumed.
Interactive element: Use a digital polling tool or real-time voting to
see class consensus on each scenario.

E. ANALYSIS
Guide students through the derivation and calculation of circular motion
quantities:
 Tangential velocity (v): ( v = r \times \omega ) or ( v = \frac{2 \pi r}{T} )
 Centripetal acceleration (a_c): ( a_c = \frac{v^2}{r} )
 Tangential acceleration (a_t): For non-uniform motion, ( a_t = r \times \
alpha ), where ( \alpha ) is angular acceleration
 Radius of curvature: Discuss how it relates to the path of the object and
how to measure or estimate it
Use sample numerical problems to demonstrate calculations.

F. ABSTRACTION
Summarize the key differences:

Aspect Uniform Circular Motion Non-Uniform Circular Motion

Velocity Constant in magnitude Varies in magnitude

Accelerati Centripetal (toward Centripetal + Tangential (along

on center) the tangent)

Speed Constant Varies

Spinning wheel at
Example Car accelerating on a curved road
constant speed

Discuss how these principles apply to real-world mechanisms like gears,

planetary orbits, and amusement rides.

G. APPLICATION:
Problem:
A satellite orbits Earth at a radius of 6,700 km from Earth's center.
The satellite completes an orbit in 90 minutes. Calculate:
a. The tangential velocity of the satellite.
b. The centripetal acceleration.
c. Whether the satellite's motion is uniform or non-uniform.
H. GENERALIZATION
What is the main difference between uniform and non-uniform circular
motion?
How is tangential velocity related to the radius and period?
What role does centripetal acceleration play in circular motion?
If the radius of a circular path increases, what happens to the centripetal
acceleration, assuming constant velocity?
Name a real-world example where non-uniform circular motion occurs.
IV. EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT
1. True or False: In uniform circular motion, the speed of the object remains
constant.
Answer: True
2. The acceleration directed toward the center of the circle is called __________
acceleration.
Answer: Centripetal
3. Which of the following quantities increases if the radius of the circular path
increases, assuming constant tangential velocity?
a) Centripetal acceleration
b) Radius of curvature
c) Tangential velocity
d) None of the above
Answer: b) Radius of curvature

4. Calculate the tangential velocity of a car moving in a circle of radius 50

meters completing one lap in 20 seconds.
Answer: ( v = \frac{2 \pi \times 50}{20} = 15.7 , \text{m/s} )

5. A spinning disc accelerates its angular velocity from 10 rad/s to 20 rad/s in 5

seconds. What is the angular acceleration?
Answer: ( \alpha = \frac{\Delta \omega}{\Delta t} = \frac{20 - 10}{5} =
2 , \text{rad/s}^2

V. ASSIGNMENT
Research and prepare a short report on how circular motion principles are used
in designing roller coasters or amusement rides. Include explanations of how
uniform and non-uniform motions are managed for safety and thrill.
