Application On Exponential Function

This document provides examples of using exponential and logarithmic functions to model growth and decay scenarios. It introduces the basic exponential growth and decay formulas, where y = a(1+r)^t for growth and y = a(1-r)^t for decay. Several word problems are worked through as examples, such as calculating population growth over time given an initial population and growth rate, or finding the value of a depreciating asset like a car in future years. Logarithmic functions are also introduced and an example shows using logarithms to determine how long it will take for a quantity doubling over time, like an investment or population, to double in value.

APPLICATION ON

EXPONENTIAL
FUNCTION
Any quantity that grows or decays by a
fixed percent at regular intervals is
said to possess exponential growth or
exponential decays .

Growth: Decay:

y = a (1+r) t
y = a (1-r) t
where:
a= initial amount before
measuring
growth/decay
r= grow/decay rate
Example 1:
The population of a certain city
has relative growth rate of 3% per
year. The population was 110,000
in 2000. Find the projected
population in the year 2005
Solution:
y = a (1+r) t

Given: a= 110,000
r= 3% or
0.03
y = 110,000 (1+0.03)5

y = 110,000 (1.03) 5

y = 127,520 projected
population after 5 years
Example 2: Suppose a certain
bacterium doubles every
minute, about how many
bacteria will there be after 8
minutes?
Solution:If an amount
doubles, the rate of increase is
100%
y = (1+1) 8

y= 2 8

y = 256 bacteria after

Example 3: In 2005 there were
1000 rabbits on an island . The
population grows 8% every
year. At this rate, how many
rabbits will there be on the
island by 2020?
Solution:
y = a (1+r) t

y = 1000 (1 + 0.08) 15

y= 3172 rabbits by
the year 2020.
Example 4: The
value of a new car in 2015
was $40,000. It depreciates

7% each year. How much will

the car be worth in 2024?
Solution:
y = a (1-r) t

y = 40, 000 (1 - 0.07) 9

y= 40,000(.093) 9

y= $20,816.44 the car be

worth in 2024
APPLICATION ON
LOGARITHMIC
FUNCTION
Example 1:
The number of ants in a nest
doubles every month. If there
are now 600 ants, about how
long will it take for their number
to grow to 9,600?
Solution:
A = Aₒ(1 +r) t

Given:
Aₒ= 600
r = 100%

A = 9600
9,600 = 600 (1 +1) t

9,600 = 600(2) t

600 600
16 = 2 t

2 =2
4 t

4=t it will take 4 months to

grow to 9,600
Example 2:
A certain town has a
population of 16,400 in 1990
and 20,200 in 2000. When
will the 1990 population be
doubled?
A = A oe
rt

AO = 16,400 A = 20,200
t = 10
  20,000 = 16400 e 10r

20,200 = e 10r

16,400
Solving for r
take the logarithm of each side
ln 20,000 = ln e 10r
16400

t≈ 3
the

r ≈ 0.0208 popula
tion
Solving for t
2= e 0.0208t

ln 2 = 0.028t ln e
ln 2 = 0.028t
ln 2 t ≈ 3 the population
will double by the year
0.0208 2023
Example 3. A $100
investment receives 5%
each year. After how many
years will the investment
have doubled?
