Objectives:
• Identify the rule of a given sequence;
• Define arithmetic sequence;
• Find the missing terms in a given
arithmetic sequence.
Activity 3: Getting to know you
Identify the rule of the following sequences:
1. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
2. 2, 5, 8, 11, 14
3. 6, 2, -2, -6, -10
4. 1, 7, 13, 19, 25
5. 0, 5, 10, 15, 20
6. -1, 1, -1, 1, -1, 1
1. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
get the difference between the terms
this would be the coefficient of n (if the 1st differences is eq.)
1n or n
use 1 as value of n in the “first” term, 2
for the “second” term & so on
6 = n + ___ 7 = n + ___ 8 = n + ___
6 = (1) + ___ 7 = (2) + ___ 8 = (3) + ___
6 = (1) + 5 7 = (2) + 5 8 = (3) + 5
use an as the nth term of the sequence; place “n”
in the equation; copy the constant if possible.
an = n + 5
Activity 3: Getting to know you
Identify the rule of the following sequences:
1. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 an = n + 5
2. 2, 5, 8, 11, 14 an = 3n - 1
3. 6, 2, -2, -6, -10 an = -4n + 10
4. 1, 7, 13, 19, 25 an = 6n - 5
5. 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 an = 5n - 5
n
Activity 3, numbers 1 to 5 are examples
of arithmetic sequence.
What is arithmetic sequence?
An arithmetic sequence is a sequence in which
each term (after the first) is obtained by adding a
constant called the common difference.
In General we could write an arithmetic sequence like this:
{a, a+d, a+2d, a+3d, ... }
where:
a is the first term, and
d is the difference between the terms (called the "common
difference")
How do we find the nth term of
an arithmetic sequence?
Arithmetic Sequence
an = a1 + (n-1)d
Where:
an is the nth term
a1 is the first term
n is the number of terms
d is the common difference
Activity 4: What is missing?
Find the missing terms in the following
arithmetic sequence:
1. 7, __, __, __, 27
2. -4, __, __, __, 28
3. 9, __, __, -3, __
4. 12, __, 34, __, __
5. __, 9, __, __, -12
6. __, __, 28, __, 42
