G10 Lesson 3 Distribution of Volcano

The document discusses the distribution of volcanoes in relation to plate tectonics. It explains that most volcanoes form along plate boundaries as the crust is composed of tectonic plates that move away from, past, and toward each other. The Philippines sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, which comprises the plate boundaries of several tectonic plates surrounding the Pacific Ocean. Volcanoes in the Philippines are classified by PHIVOLCS as active, potentially active, or inactive based on their eruptive history. The distribution of volcanoes globally and formation of volcanic landforms can be explained by the movement of tectonic plates at convergent and divergent boundaries.

VOLCANO AND ITS RELATION TO PLATE TECTONICS

LESSON 3: DISTRIBUTION OF
VOLCANOES
BY: TEACHER ANNA LIZA D. GOMEZ-JUNIO
OBJECTIVES

1. I can identify the distribution of

volcanoes in the Philippines and around the
world.
2. I can explain its distribution to plate
tectonic theory.
ELICIT – LET’S RECALL!

What is crust?
What is Pacific Ring of Fire?
CRUST

Composed of tectonic plates that move either:

away, past, and toward each other

 Since most volcanoes are formed along the plate boundaries, it is
expected that many active volcanoes are formed along with them.
PACIFIC RING OF FIRE

Philippines is situated along with it

Comprises the tectonic boundaries of Pacific Plate,
Philippine Plate, Eurasian Plate, Juan de Fuca and
Cocos Plates, and the Nazca Plate.
ENGAGE Let us view this video on how the volcanoes are formed.
EXPLORE

In the Philippines, volcanoes and volcanic activities are classified

and monitored by the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and
Seismology (PHIVOLCS). PHIVOLCS classified the volcanoes
in the Philippines according to its eruptive history. There are three
classifications of volcanoes in the Philippines according to
PHIVOLCS.

LET’S ELABORATE
ACTIVITY – DATA READING
Directions:
Group yourselves with 4 members. Given the data in table and from the reports of
your classmates, answer the following questions. Write your answers in 1 whole
sheet of paper.

1. Identify the active volcanoes across the Philippine archipelago. Which among the
three major island groups in the Philippines (Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao) has the
greatest number of active volcanoes? Potentially active volcanoes?

2. In the global scale, is there a relationship between the formation of volcanoes and
the tectonic plates? Briefly describe their relationship.
LET’S ELABORATE
GENERALIZATION

When the tectonic plates move apart , it is diverge,

that will lead to formation of new land masses,
with volcanic activities. When the plates move
towards each other, it is converge, then the plate
that sinks or subduct will melt in the mantle with
volcanoes occurs.
LET’S EVALUATE
Post-Assessment

Choose the correct

answer among the given
options on each item.
Shade your answer in the
answer sheet given.

ten locations where notable
volcanoes are found across the
globe.
