Screenless

Abhinand P K
Introduction
 The screenless display technology is used to transfer or display information without
using a physical screen.
 Screenless display is the present evolving technology in the field of
the computer-enhanced technologies.
 It is going to be the one of the greatest technological development
in the coming future years.
 Development work still going on this new emerging technology
which can change the whole spectacular view of the screenless
displays.
ORIGIN OF SCREENLESS DISPLAY
 Reto Meier predicts that 10 years from now we will be able to get transparent LCD patches
that will adhere to our eyeglasses and 20 years from now we’ll have contact lenses that
project images directly onto our retinas and that we will be able to interface with computers
through mind control.

 The most profound effect will come from the development of the synaptic interface
technology. This technology will allow people who are visually impaired to see just as the
hearing impaired are able to hear through cochlear implants.
FIRST SCREEN-LESS DISPLAY

• The first screen-less display that needs mentioning is Google Glass. Google Glass sits on the face like a pair
of glasses, and on one eye it has a block of glass that allows you to see augmented reality. Images can be
displayed right in front of your eye, as well as text and information about objects and places that are in front of
you. This technology is only in its early stages, but definitely shows that screen-less displays will become a
natural form of media consumption in the future.
THE SIXTHSENSE TECHNOLOGY

1. It is a wearable gestural interface that augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets
us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information.
2. In this technology user is able to interact with a three dimensional image projected into thin air. Imagine your
desktop floating in the space before your eyes waiting for your interaction!
TYPES OF DISPLAYS

Screenless computing systems can be divided into three groups

1. Visual Image
2. Retinal Projection
3. Synaptic Interface/Brain Computer Interface
VISUAL IMAGE
1. Visual Image screen less display includes any
screen less image that the eye can perceive.
The most common example of Visual Image
screen less display is a hologram.
HOLOGRAM
Holographic messages, which we previously saw only in movies like Star Wars are
about to become reality through a new technology arrived directly from Japan. It’s True
3D, which is based on older technology, developed by AIST and Keio University in
2006. This new projection system can be used to present images without the need for a
screen.
A hologram is a three-dimensional representation of an object created through the
interference of light beams from a laser or other coherent light source. Holography
captures and reconstructs the light field of an object, allowing viewers to see it from
different angles
Projection Window

A projection window is the surface or area where images, videos, or digital content are displayed, commonly
used in projectors, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) systems. In traditional settings, a projector
casts light onto a screen or wall, creating a visible image for the audience to view. In AR, the projection
window is the user’s environment, where digital elements are overlaid onto real-world objects using devices
like smart glasses or smartphones. In VR, the projection window refers to the immersive 3D space created by
a headset, allowing users to interact with digital content as if it were physically present. The effectiveness of a
projection window depends on factors such as brightness, clarity, size, and the technology used, which
collectively enhance the viewing experience.
RETINAL DISPLAY
A retinal display is a technology that projects images directly onto the retina of the eye,
creating the illusion of a display in the user's field of vision. It works by using lasers or
focused light to scan images pixel by pixel, effectively bypassing the need for a
traditional screen. As the light hits the retina, it stimulates the photoreceptor cells,
allowing the brain to perceive the projected image as if it were floating in space. This
method enables high-resolution visuals and a wide field of view, making it particularly
useful in augmented reality (AR) applications and heads-up displays (HUDs).
HOW VISION WORKS
We can see things because of
reflected light. Light bounces of an
object and enters our eye. This light
then focuses on the retina to form an
image.

RETINAL PROJECTION
In retinal projection, the light does not have to be reflected off of an object. The light is projected
directly onto the retina to form an image.

SYNAPTIC INTERFACE
In Synaptic Interface images are sent to an electrode implanted in the brain. And this
images can be used to provide vision who have a defect of the eye by bypassing the
damaged eye parts and sending a visual signal straight to the brain.
Advantages
1. Low power requirements
2. Higher resolution images
3. Greater portability
4. Wider angle of view
5. More accurate color
6. Greater brightness and better contrast
7. Ability to present 3D images
Disadvantages
1. Limited Resolution:
Many screenless displays, especially early models, may struggle to
achieve the high resolutions offered by traditional screens, potentially
leading to a less detailed visual experience

2. Environmental Limitations:
3. Cost
4. Eye Strain:
Prolonged use of retinal displays can cause eye discomfort or strain,
particularly if the projection is not perfectly aligned with the user's natural line of sight
Applications
1. Holography:
- Holographic displays can create three-dimensional images that can be viewed
without the need for screens. This is useful in entertainment, advertising, and
education.
2. Medical Imaging:
- In medical settings, screenless displays can project vital information or 3D models
of organs directly into a surgeon's line of sight, aiding in procedures.
3. Education and Training:
- Interactive learning experiences can be enhanced with screenless displays,
allowing students to engage with 3D models or simulations without traditional
screens.
4. Home Automation:
- Screenless displays can be integrated into smart home systems to provide
information and controls in a more intuitive way, such as projecting controls onto
surfaces.
5. Gaming:
- New gaming experiences can be developed using screenless technology, allowing
players to interact with 3D environments in real time.
6. Telecommunications:
• Future communication devices may use screenless displays for projecting
