Cell Structure and Function
An Overview
What is a Cell?
• A cell is the basic structural and functional unit
of all living organisms.
• Cells provide structure, absorb nutrients, and
convert these into energy for various cellular
functions.
Types of Cells
• There are two primary types of cells:
• 1. Prokaryotic Cells: These cells lack a nucleus
and are simpler in structure. Bacteria are
examples.
• 2. Eukaryotic Cells: These cells have a defined
nucleus and are more complex, found in
plants, animals, and fungi.
Cell Organelles
• Cells contain organelles, each with specific
roles:
• - Nucleus: Controls cell activities and stores
DNA.
• - Mitochondria: Powerhouse of the cell,
producing energy.
• - Ribosomes: Synthesize proteins essential for
cell function.
• - Endoplasmic Reticulum: Transports proteins
and lipids.
Cell Membrane
• The cell membrane is a semi-permeable
barrier that controls what enters and exits the
cell.
• It maintains cell integrity and helps in
communication with the external
environment.
