WALA
• SALTS
WALT
• Explain what a salt is
• Give some examples of salts by reacting with an acid
• Prepare a salt by reacting a metal with an acid
KEYWORDS
• Carbonate
• Chloride
• Citrates
• Crystallization
• Formula
• Nitrate
• Salt
STARTER
• With a partner, write word equations for three displacement
reactions.
• Now write word equations for two displacement reactions that
cannot happen.
WHAT IS A SALT
• A salt is a compound formed when a metal ion
replaces the hydrogen ion in an acid.
• Metal + Acid ----> Salt + Hydrogen gas
• Zn + H2SO4 -----> ZnSO4 + H2
• Acid + Alkali ----> Salt + water
• HCl + NaOH ----> NaCl + H2O
SALTS
• When you think about salt, you probably think of the salt you put in your
food as flavouring. This is sodium chloride. Other examples of salts
includes copper sulphate, potassium nitrate, calcium carbonate e.t.c.
ACIDS IN SALTS
• All acids contain hydrogen. The table below gives you the formulae of the three common
acids you find in the laboratory. The table also shows some examples of the salts that can
be formed from these acids.
• Two other acids you can meet are carbonic acid and citric acid. Carbonic acid is a weak acid
formed when carbon dioxide reacts with water. Salts formed from it are called carbonates.
• Citric acids are found in fruits, such as oranges and lemons. Salts formed from it are called
citrates.
NAME OF ACID FORMULA SALT FORMED FROM EXAMPLE OF SALT FORMULA OF SALT
THE ACID
Hydrochloric acid HCl chlorides Sodium chloride NaCl
• Sulphuric acid H2SO4 Sulphates Copper sulphate CuSO4
Nitric acid HNO3 Nitrates Potassium nitrate KNO3
FORMATION OF SALTS FROM
RADICALS
FORMATION OF SALTS FROM ACIDS
• ACID + METAL ----> SALT + HYDROGEN GAS
FORMATION OF SALTS FROM ACIDS
• ACID + METAL OXIDE(BASE) ----> SALT + WATER
FORMATION OF SALTS FROM ACIDS
• ACID + ALKALI -----> SALT + WATER
FORMATION OF SALTS FROM ACIDS
• ACID + CARBONATE SALT ----> SALT + WATER + CARBON(IV) OXIDE
GROUP WORK
•In groups of four, students categorize
different reactions (provided on
handouts) into types that produce salts.
INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY
• Prepare salt in the lab. React zinc with
hydrochloric acid and observe the reaction,
then evaporate part of the solution to
observe salt formation. Record the
observations and write the reaction
equation.
PLENARY
ASSIGNMENT
• Research and write a brief report on two
salts used in everyday life, explaining how
they are prepared and their uses.
