Communication is the exchange of thoughts, ideas,
concepts, and views between two or among three or
more people (Madrunio, M. and Martin, I. 2018).
To improve our communication skills, we should also know
the elements of communication.
The communication process involves elements such as
source, message, encoding, decoding, receiver, feedback,
context, and barrier.
▪ Source – the speaker or sender of a message
▪ Message – the information, or ideas from the source or
speaker
▪ Encoding – the process of transferring the message
▪ Media – the means to deliver a message, the channels
▪ Decoding – the process of interpreting an encoded message
▪ Receiver – the recipient of the message
▪ Feedback – the reaction or response of the receiver to the
message from the sender
▪ Barriers – the factors which may affect the communication
process like culture, individual differences, language use, noise,
past experiences, and status

Types of Communication
According to Context
Communication may happen:
Intrapersonal communication means
talking to oneself. Some label it as self or inner
talk, inner monologue, or inner dialogue.
Psychologists call it as self-verbalization or self-
statement.
It usually happens when they are thinking,
analyzing, deciding, encouraging or motivating
themselves.
Between or among-
interpersonal
Interpersonal takes place when there is an
interactive exchange. This may occur in dyads or small
groups, also known as group communication. A
communication situation is interpersonal if it is meant to
establish or deepen one’s relationship with others.
However, if the objective is to achieve something at
the end of the conversation, it becomes transactional.
