Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC on ESPN 71, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host. We’re back in the warehouse for the first time in a few months and honestly I haven’t missed it. The card here is relatively weak, though not fully devoid of fights worth watching. The main event got changed during fight week as Hyun Sung Park stepped in replacing Amir Albazi against ranked contender Tatsuro Taira, Taira had some pretty good momentum before suffering his first loss against Brandon Royval last year while Park has a chance to really make his mark. Beyond that Mateusz Rebecki is usually good for a fun fight, Elves Brener vs. Esteban Ribovics looks solid as does Danny Silva vs. Kevin Vallejos. On the prelims Rinya Nakamura is looking to get back on track, and I’m usually down to watch a Rodolfo Vieira fight. So while this card is definitely on the thinner side I don’t think it’s fully without merit on paper, let’s just hope it delivers the action.

UFC on ESPN 71 comes to the world from the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Brendan Fitzgerald, Michael Bisping and Dominick Cruz will be on the call for us with McKenzie Pavacich as the roving reporter. We’re under the newer rules so 12-6 elbows are good and you need at least a knee on the mat to be downed. Do keep in mind the Apex probably still has the smaller 25 foot cage set up as well.

Piera Rodriguez has gone 3-2 in the UFC but she is coming off of a win and is now looking to build another UFC winning streak. Ketlen Souza has gone 2-2 in the UFC but 2-1 since returning to strawweight, she is coming off of a fairly close split decision loss to Angela Hill though and is trying to avoid her first UFC losing streak. The odds like Rodriguez at -270 to a +220 comeback on Souza.

Strawweight Bout: Piera Rodriguez (10-2, 116 lbs.) vs. Ketlen Souza (15-5, 116 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: These two are the same height while Rodriguez has half an inch of reach advantage. Both women probe with some leg kicks early. A bit of stance switching from Souza but she’s mostly orthodox. A few more leg kicks from Souza as she circles. They get close and Rodriguez lands a few knees from a double collar tie before Souza pushes free. Another clinch and they trade knees before breaking. Left hand from Souza then a knee. Another left hook from Souza. Rodriguez with a left of her own then a knee into a clinch. All their clinches have been in space, no fence work yet. More knees from Rodriguez, Souza doesn’t like those and she winds up pulling free. Another knee from Rodriguez in close. Souza jabs in close but Rodriguez hits a double leg into full guard. Rodriguez stands and looks to pass but can’t quite get around the guard. Souza wrestles up and gets free. They clash on a few kicks. Left hook from Rodriguez, then another one. They trade punches then Souza whiffs on a wheel kick and gets taken down into half guard. Souza is working on a back take with a kimura threat, the kind of thing that shouldn’t work and doesn’t, the round ends with Rodriguez still on top.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Rodriguez but a close one

ROUND TWO: Rodriguez grabs a quick clinch to fire a few knees then lands a high kick as they break. They tie up again, Rodriguez keeps landing these strong knees to the body in there. Body kick from Souza. Leg kick from Souza. Souza blocks a high kick. Bit of a front kick from Rodriguez then a left hook in close. Combination from Rodriguez then a clinch on the fence. Single leg from Rodriguez into half guard, decent little takedown. Souza quickly hits a technical get up and they reset. Jumping knee from Souza but Rodriguez takes her down off of it back into half guard. A few body blows from Rodriguez on the mat. Rodriguez lands a few lefts to the head, Souza tries to tie up a heel hook then uses that to regain her feet and push Rodriguez into the fence. They trade a few knees then Souza lands an elbow but eats a knee on the break. Rodriguez slips throwing a kick but regains her feet and lands her own spinning elbow. They split a few jabs then clinch. Souza is after a trip but can’t find one. Not much going on, Rodriguez then spins Souza into the fence and fires a few knees. They break without incident then Rodriguez hits a single leg just before the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Rodriguez, 20-18 Rodriguez overall

ROUND THREE: Knee from Rodriguez to start the round. Souza with a few low kicks then misses a few hooks. Knee from Rodriguez then a takedown but Souza scrambles up and free pretty quickly. They split jabs then Souza pushes into a clinch on the fence. They break without incident. Rodriguez with a few low kicks then a jab. Left hook from Rodriguez. Bit of a right from Rodriguez then they trade calf kicks. Knee from Rodriguez in close. They trade front kicks. Body kick from Rodriguez. Both women land lefts. Jab from Souza. Glancing high kick from Rodriguez. Souza lands a right hand after missing a jumping knee. Left hook from Rodriguez then a takedown into half guard again. A few punches land for Rodriguez, Souza tries to sit up and wrestle but Rodriguez moves to side control. Rodriguez lands some elbows as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Rodriguez, 30-27 Rodriguez overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Piera Rodriguez via split decision (28-29, 29-28 x2)

The rounds were close enough overall to warrant that being split. No interview for Rodriguez.

Felipe Bunes has gone 1-1 in the UFC but that loss is to Joshua Van and he is coming off of a win so he could get his first UFC winning streak up and running here. Rafael Estevam is undefeated including two UFC wins but he missed weight here pretty badly, his second time doing so in the UFC, and he needs a win at a minimum to smooth that gaff over. Estevam is a big favorite at -850 to +575 on Bunes.

Flyweight Bout: Felipe Bunes (14-7, 125 lbs.) vs. Rafael Estevam (13-0, 130 lbs.)*

ROUND ONE: The reach is identical but Estevam is an inch taller, is seven years younger, and of course missed weight by five pounds. Both men do some range finding with kicks, and I’m calling some BS on the height measurements as Bunes looks taller here. They trade a few leg kicks while circling. Estevam punches in close then tries a takedown, Bunes sprawls then fights off a single leg and they reset. Bit of a right from Estevam. Bunes goes southpaw, eats an inside leg kick but then gets a clinch to the fence. Both men can’t quite land knees then Estevam pulls free. Estevam jabs the body then hits a double leg against the fence into half guard. Bunes is able to get full guard but eats a few elbows along the way. Estevam avoids a triangle attack then moves to side control. Now Bunes tries a Buggy choke, he’s got the general position but he’s trying to get his legs adjusted. Estevam is aware of the attack but he’s not able to get any offense going and will just kind of ride out the round there.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Bunes as I think the Buggy choke was pretty dangerous and edged out the round

ROUND TWO: Estevam gets back on forward pressure and lands a right to the body. Bit of a knee from Estevam into a clinch and he’s got Bunes on the fence. Knee from Estevam then he digs body shots in the pocket as they break the clinch. Bunes fires a few punches then a calf kick. Spinning back fist from Estevam then they trade rights. Both men land hooks then Estevam hits a double leg into side control again. Estevam drops hammer fists and Bunes tries a triangle choke again but Estevam postures through it. Bunes does have full guard now but eats a few elbows. The pace from Estevam might be getting to Bunes at this point. Estevam lands a few more punches. Elbows from Estevam now then hammer fists as well. Bunes is able to kick Estevam up and get up but Estevam immediately double legs him again into leg drag. Hammer fists again from Estevam as he moves to a ride while Bunes rolls to his knees. Estevam keeps up the strikes and pressure but Bunes is able to stand with Estevam on his back still. That’s where the round will end.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Estevam, 19-19 overall

ROUND THREE: Estevam gets back on pressure to start the round. Bunes lands a calf kick. A few body punches from Estevam then he hits a double leg with increasing ease. Estevam moves to half guard, Bunes kicks free and regains his feet but Estevam is still after him. Right hand from Estevam then they trade lefts. They trade rights then Estevam keeps up the punching pressure. Bunes is trying to get an exchange going but Estevam takes him down into side control. Bunes gets full guard but eats punches along the way. Kimura attack from Bunes, Estevam passes to side control and ignores it to land strikes. Bunes goes to turtle, Estevam gets one hook in and tries a Suloev stretch to keep Bunes from really basing up. Estevam could switch to a twister attack but decides against it to land more punches as Bunes goes back to turtle. Body triangle now for Estevam and he starts landing punches to try and open up the choke. More punches from Estevam then some hammer fists as well. Elbows now from Estevam as well as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Estevam, 29-28 Estevam overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Rafael Estevam via unanimous decision (29-28 x3)

If Estevam could get his weight under control he could have a future at flyweight but he’s missed weight in 2 of his 3 UFC fights. No interview for the winner.

Austin Bashi dropped his UFC debut back in January, now he’s back and hoping for a successful sophomore outing. John Yannis is stepping in on relatively short notice here for his UFC debut, replacing Francis Marshall, but that does give him the chance to maximize his first impression. Bashi is the biggest favorite on the card at -900 while Yannis has a +600 comeback set.

Featherweight Bout: Austin Bashi (13-1, 145.5 lbs.) vs. John Yannis (9-3, 145.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Yannis is an inch taller with half an inch of reach advantage while Bashi is eight years younger. A lot of stance switching from Yannis as they move around. Bit of a rush from Bashi, he’s willing to stance switching as well but is mostly orthodox. Double leg from Bashi into half guard. Yannis gives up his back and Bashi gets one hook in then lands punches to the head. Yannis stands, Bashi is able to ride him back down then keeps landing punches from the ride position. Bashi gets the second hook in and keeps sneaking in punches while trying to open up the choke. Yannis is trying to base up but Bashi is riding him well. Body triangle from Bashi and he keeps landing short punches. Yannis breaks the hooks but Bashi moves to a ride and keeps control. Bashi jumps to the backpack and grabs a choke which gets the tap.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Austin Bashi via Submission, rear naked choke, at 3:39 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Bashi for his work. For our first finish of the event Bashi gets an interview, he thanks God first and mentions working hard to fix mistakes from his UFC debut which he lost. He thanks Yannis for taking the fight on short notice during fight week then says he wants to fight again as soon as possible. To close he thanks his family and team before mentioning his uncle who passed recently.

Nick Klein suffered a loss in his UFC debut earlier this year which snapped a three fight winning streak, he’s looking to get that critical first UFC win under his belt in his second outing with the promotion. Andrey Pulyaev is in essentially an identical position, lost his UFC debut in March to break a five fight winning streak and now still needs to find that first UFC win. Close one here, -130 for Pulyaev to +110 on Klein.

Middleweight Bout: Nick Klein (6-2, 186 lbs.) vs. Andrey Pulyaev (9-3, 185.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Pulyaev is three inches taller with an inch and a half of reach advantage. Southpaw for Pulyaev. Both men probe with kicks then Klein hits a takedown. Punches from Klein as Pulyaev wall walks then he gets him down from a clinch. Pulyaev gives up the back, both hooks in for Klein. Klein goes for the choke but can’t get around the neck yet. Pulyaev defends then scrambles up into another clinch. Klein looks for a double leg then slips to the back standing. Pulyaev gets chest to chest and they trade a few knees. A few more knees go back and forth. Things are stalling out here but the ref is content to stay out of it. Eventually Pulyaev pulls free then lands a few left hands. Solid left hand from Pulyaev, Klein pushes into a clinch again to stop his offensive momentum. Pulyaev with a few knees then one to the head before they break. A few punches go back and forth, Klein might have worn himself out. Klein gets the back standing and hits a takedown as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Klein but could go either way

ROUND TWO: Jabs from Pulyaev then Klein tries a double leg but that hits the fence. A few elbows from Pulyaev as he defends. Klein gets a body lock and spins Pulyaev down into side control but Pulyaev walks over with the fence and gets up into another clinch then lands a few knees and punches as they break. More punches from Pulyaev then a body kick. Pulyaev drops Klein with punches and a knee, that gets the ref to step in.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Andrey Pulyaev via TKO, body kick and punches, at 1:31 of Round 2

Pulyaev gets an interview along with his cornerman to translate, guess the UFC doesn’t have their Russian translator on hand tonight, and he knew the wrestling would be tough but that Klein would get tired and he could get him later. He likes to show his skills and thanks his coaches including Alexander Shlemenko which is a blast from the past for me.

Rodolfo Vieira has gone 5-3 in the UFC but did lose his last fight and now looks to avoid his first losing streak. Tresean Gore missed weight pretty badly here plus he’s gone 2-3 in the UFC and another loss could end his time with the promotion. The odds like Vieira here at -230 while Gore’s comeback sits at +190.

Middleweight Bout: Tresean Gore (5-3, 189.5 lbs.)* vs. Rodolfo Vieira (10-3, 185 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: These two are the same height while Gore has two inches of reach advantage. Both men do some feinting early. Bit of a body jab from Vieira. Jab from Vieira. Calf kick from Vieira then another jab. Gore misses a right hand. They trade calf kicks then Vieira tries a single leg but Gore defends. Both men with some body jabs. Vieira tries another takedown, that stops at the fence though and they clinch. This time Vieira lands some punches, he could have kneed the head as Gore has a hand down for balance. Eventually they separate. A few jabs from Vieira. Gore lands a leg kick. Not sure which round might have gone to Gore. No interview for Vieira.

Rinya Nakamura has gone 3-1 in the UFC but he’s coming off of his first loss, he’s a fairly decorated wrestler but looked fairly one dimensional in his last fight. On the plus side he’s still young enough to grow so this represents a chance for him to show off his improving skills and try to avoid his first losing streak. Nathan Fletcher has gone 1-1 in the UFC and he’s coming off of a disputed decision with Caolan Loughran, he’s trying to avoid his first losing streak. Nakamura is your favorite at -380 while Fletcher’s +300 might be a decent little value bet.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Nakamura for his work. Mic time for Nakamura, he’s got OK English, and says he really wanted to show how his wrestling feeds into his striking here. He talks us through the finish then says he’d like to fight again before the end of the year but says he feels he needs another win or two before he’s earned the right to have names so he’ll take anyone.

Neil Magny has been with the UFC since way back in 2013 and has 34 fights with the promotion, he’s on a two fight losing streak though and likely needs a win to hold off talk of retirement given his age and time spent in the sport. Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos is a bit of an old war horse himself, at at 38 and with a UFC career dating to 2015 and consisting of 17 bouts he’s likewise trying to find a few more feel good wins before the time comes to hang up the gloves. Tatsuro Taira just suffered his first loss when he fought to a split decision with Brandon Royval, that loss showed some holes in Taira’s game that he can prove he’s been shoring up with a win here while also regaining momentum and defending his ranking. Hyun Sung Park was originally supposed to fight Steve Erceg next week but got moved to this card after Amir Albazi fell out of the fight, he’s undefeated though and has a couple of UFC wins as well. This represents a big step up in class for him but a win would launch him into the rankings. Taira closed at -340 to Park’s +270.
