Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC on ESPN 70, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host for the event. The UFC took last week off because of the proximity to the 4th of July but now we’re back in action and we’ve got a card that I’m pretty down on but others have been a bit more optimistic about. In the main event Derrick Lewis is back in action for the first time since May of last year and he’s taking on Tallison Teixeira who’s 1-0 in the UFC but is ranked because heavyweight is a wasteland. The co-main event is very much trying to figure out who’s coming and going at welterweight as veteran Stephen Thompson takes on the up and coming Gabriel Bonfim, and there’s a similar fight between Calvin Kattar and Steve Garcia. Things get a little slim after that but Morgan Charriere and Nate Landwehr could be fun, Chris Curtis moving down to welterweight against Max Griffin is OK. The only fights that look fairly poor are the heavyweight or light heavyweight bouts, but that’s kind of just the story of MMA these days.

UFC on ESPN 70 comes to the world from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Brendan Fitzgerald, Laura Sanko, and Daniel Cormier will be calling the action for us with Charly Arnolt as the roving reporter. We will have the newer rules so be on the look out for 12-6 elbows and fighters getting the hang of the new definition of a downed fighter.

Fatima Kline has gone 1-1 in the UFC but she’s undefeated at strawweight and is coming off of a win in that weight class, now she’s trying to establish herself as a prospect of note. Melissa Martinez has also gone 1-1 in the UFC and is coming off of a win, she’s also trying to establish herself in the weight class. Kline is the biggest favorite on the card at -1200 to a +750 comeback on Martinez.

Mike Davis has gone 4-2 in the UFC and just had a four fight winning streak broken by Fares Ziam, now he’s trying to avoid his first losing streak. Mitch Ramirez dropped his UFC debut over a year ago when he came up short against Thiago Moises, he’s back now though and is looking for that all important first UFC win. Another lopsided fight here, -900 for Davis while a Ramirez win would payout at +600.

Valter Walker has gone 2-1 in the UFC and is on a two fight winning streak, if he can extend that streak here it might be Walker who makes that move towards the upper echelon of the division. The odds are with Nzechukwu at -205 to Walker’s +170.

Jake Matthews has gone 3-2 in his last five fights and is on a two fight winning streak, despite only being 30 he’s been with the UFC since 2014 and if he’s going to make a real push through the weight class he needs an impressive performance here. Chidi Njokuani has gone 3-0 since returning to welterweight last year and if he can get that streak to four in a row here it could earn him a shot at a bigger or even ranked name next. Mic time for Garcia, he gives glory to God then plays with the crowd a bit and says being in front of an audience is great after as many Apex fights as he’s had. Stephen Thompson has twice fought for the welterweight title but at 42 and now on a two fight losing streak he’s barely holding onto his ranking, he badly needs a win to remain a relevant part of the division. Gabriel Bonfim has gone 4-1 in the UFC and is on a two fight winning streak, he’s taking a step up in class here but could be rewarded with a ranking if he’s able to make good on the opportunity. Bonfim is a pretty heavy favorite at -470 while +360 on Thompson might be a decent value bet just given how wide the odds are.

Derrick Lewis has been with the UFC since 2014 and even fought for the heavyweight title once upon a time, badly losing to Daniel Cormier in the effort. Lewis has gone 2-4 in his last six fights but he did win his last fight and could get his first winning streak since 2021 here. Tallison Teixeira is undefeated and just 1-0 in the UFC but that’s enough for a ranking at heavyweight these days, he’s taking a really big step up in class here but a win would be huge for his career. Despite the experience and age difference Teixeira is the favorite at -325 against a +260 on Lewis that has to tempt bettors.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Lewis for his work. Mic time for Lewis, he was just on the phone with the President as the announcement was read off. He says the other team talked bad about him that’s why he mimed urinating on them after the finish. He talks us through the finish then reiterates that Teixeira wasn’t ready for this level of opposition. Asked what he wants next he wants his wife, who is here with him, and promises some ground and pound. Heavyweight might suck as a division but Lewis does tend to deliver the post fight promo at least.

Well on that note UFC on ESPN 70 comes to a close. We’ll be unpacking the fallout from his event on the 411 Ground and Pound podcast plus looking ahead to UFC 318 next week. That event is all hanging on the main event, nothing else on that card is PPV worthy, but Max Holloway vs. Dustin Poirier 3 is a can’t miss fight anyway you slice it but especially with it being Poirier’s retirement bout. I’ll be back next week for that and I hope you will as well. Until then thank you for reading, stay safe out there and keep checking 411mania for all of your pop culture needs.
