Vatican Council Liturgical Reform

This study offers a systematic and comparative account of three major medieval commentaries on the rite of the Holy Mass: St. Thomas Aquinas’s exposition in the “Summa theologiæ,” Pope Innocent III’s “De sacro altaris mysterio,” and “De mysterio missæ” attributed to St. Albert the Great. At its centre stands the Roman Canon—the core of the Latin Mass tradition—whose enduring liturgical use prompted centuries of theological reflection. Bridging perspectives of doctrine, sacraments, and liturgical exegesis, the dissertation addresses the long-standing tension between the spiritual and philological schools of interpretation. By retrieving the Thomistic doctrine of spiritual signification—grounded in sacred doctrine and operative in Scripture, sacraments, and liturgy—it proposes a theological resolution. This Thomistic ressourcement demonstrates that the spiritual sense is not a subjective imposition, but an objective content of the rites themselves—signifying the passion of Christ, the sanctification of the Church, and the final consummation of the mystical body. In doing so, it contributes to the renewal of liturgical theology and highlights Aquinas’s synthesis as a vital key for understanding the Holy Mass in the Western tradition.

In beiden Fällen steht er am Anfang eines Weges und in beiden verweist die Rede vom „Segen“ darauf, was der Sinn und das Ziel dieses Weges ist – das Leben selbst. Segnungen sind nämlich keine Zaubersprüche, das Ergebnis nicht die Verleihung magischer Kräfte, sondern ein Bekenntnis zu Gott, der das Leben will und zu einem Mehr an Leben führt.

The epiclesis, or invocation of the Holy Spirit, has been the subject of much study, particularly in relation to the Eucharist and baptism. Epicletic material can also be found in the marriage rites, both the nuptial blessing and other domestic rites.  However, the Ordo celebrandi matrimonium 1991 contains the first explicit epiclesis over the couple in Western liturgical history. After providing a brief history of the nuptial blessing and other related rites in Western liturgical history, this essay compares the nuptial blessings from the  Ordo celebrandi matrimonium 1969 and 1991.  Then, it discusses the implications of the explicit epiclesis in the 1991 Ordo celebrandi matrimonium for ecumenical relations.

L’epiclesi, o invocazione dello Spirito Santo, è stata oggetto di numerosi studi, in particolare in relazione all’eucaristia e al battesimo. Materiale epicletico si trova anche nei riti del matrimonio, sia nella benedizione nuziale che in altri riti domestici. Tuttavia, l’Ordo celebrandi matrimonium del 1991 contiene la prima epiclesi esplicita sulla coppia nella storia liturgica occidentale. Dopo una breve storia della benedizione nuziale e di altri riti correlati nella storia liturgica occidentale, questo saggio confronta le benedizioni nuziali dell’Ordo celebrandi matrimonium del 1969 e del 1991. Successivamente, discute le implicazioni dell’epiclesi esplicita nell’Ordo celebrandi matrimonium del 1991 per le relazioni ecumeniche.

Informed by classical Latin rhetoric and composed with a tightly regulated vocabulary, the orations «super oblata» of the ancient Roman Mass are often treated as a subgenre of the Collect. From a selective survey of the super oblata in the early sacramentaries (ca. 500-800 C.E.), this study argues for a revision of such a consensus. Ritually, this oration emerges as an embolism in the Mass, both concluding the offertory and anticipating the anaphora; Roman liturgists crafted the super oblata to articulate a specific petition for the day’s Mass. Theologically, these orations disclose a local Church which affirmed the primacy of God’s action in her liturgy. They unveil the eschatological and epicletic sensibility of the Roman Eucharist.

Ispirate dalla retorica latina classica e composte con un vocabolario rigorosamente regolato, le orazioni «super oblata» dell’antica messa romana sono spesso trattate come un sottogenere della colletta. Da un esame selettivo delle super oblata nei primi sacramentari (ca. 500-800 d.C.), questo studio propone una revisione di tale consenso. Ritualmente, questa orazione emerge come un embolismo nella Messa, concludendo l’offertorio e anticipando l’anafora; i liturgisti romani hanno creato le super oblata per formulare una petizione specifica per la Messa del giorno. Teologicamente, queste orazioni rivelano una Chiesa locale che affermava la primazia dell’azione di Dio nella sua liturgia. Esse svelano la sensibilità escatologica ed epicletica dell’eucaristia romana.

In occasione del 61° anniversario della promulgazione della Costituzione liturgica Sacrosanctum Concilium, mercoledì 4 dicembre 2024, 41a annata di Ecclesia orans, si è tenuta la seconda giornata di studio proposta dalla nostra rivista, dal titolo “L’atto penitenziale”. L’evento è stato organizzato in collaborazione con il Pontificio Istituto Liturgico e con il patrocinio dell’Associazione Professori e Cultori di Liturgia, del Centro Azione Liturgica, del Centro Liturgico Vincenziano, del Deutsches Liturgisches Institut, delle Pie Discepole del Divin Maestro e dell’Editrice Domenicana Italiana. Hanno preso parte al convegno 198 persone di cui 118 in presenza e 78 tramite collegamento online. In apertura, con il suo saluto istituzionale, il nuovo preside del Pontificio Istituto Liturgico, il Prof. Dr. Stefan Geiger, O.S.B., ha lodato la buona tradizione di celebrare l'anniversario della Sacrosanctum Concilium con una giornata di studio, che ha anche il merito di sottolineare la dimensione comunitaria dello studio, valorizzando i frutti della ricerca dell'Istituto e favorendo il confronto accademico. Il Prof. Dr. Markus Tymister, direttore di Ecclesia orans, ha presentato il volume degli atti della giornata di studio 2023, "L'orazione dei fedeli / The prayer of the faithful", e ha introdotto ai lavori del convegno durante il quale sono intervenuti otto relatori provenienti da sei atenei e di cinque diverse nazioni. La prima relazione, affidata al Prof. Dr. Ubaldo Cortoni, O.S.B.cam del Pontificio Ateneo Sant'Anselmo, ha avuto come titolo "L'atto penitenziale dal Convegno di Friburgo alla Relatio Coetus a studiis 'De ordine Missae' nelle carte di Cipriano Vagaggini (1964-1967)". Nel corso dell'intervento il relatore ha esposto i punti fondamentali della discussione nel Coetus X, con rifermenti agli interventi di Paolo VI, presentando documenti finora inediti. È seguito l'intervento del Prof. Dr. Radek Tichý dell'Univerzita Karlova (Praga, Repubblica Ceca) che ha avuto come scopo quello di rispondere alla domanda "L'atto penitenziale: a cosa serve?", evidenziando come questo rito sia uno degli elementi introduttivi della celebrazione eucaristica. Egli ha sottolineato che non è possibile condensare in un solo rito tutta la ricchezza del mistero celebrato, e che l'atto penitenziale svolge il ruolo di preparazione dei fedeli all'offerta eucaristica.. La terza relazione sul tema "The challenge of translating fratres in the Penitential Rite for the Eucharist celebration in a single-gender community. Does psycho-spiritual tension give an added dimension to the penitential act or become a rubrical debate?", offerta da Richard Oduor SL.L. del Pontificio Istituto Liturgico, ha presentato le problematiche connesse alla comprensione e alla traduzione del valore inclusivo del termine fratres nelle lingue moderne, sull'orizzonte del necessario rapporto tra realtà e rito, composizione dell'assemblea e linguaggio rituale.

On the 61 st anniversary of the promulgation of the Liturgical Constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium, on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, during the 41 st year of Ecclesia orans, the second study day proposed by our journal was held titled "The Penitential Act". The event was organized in collaboration with the Pontifical Liturgical Institute and with the patronage of the Associazione Professori e Cultori di Liturgia, the Centro di Azione Liturgica, the Centro Liturgico Vincenziano, the German Liturgical Institute, the Pie Discepole del Divin Maestro, and the Editrice Domenicana Italiana publisher. A number of 198 people participated in the conference, of whom 118 were present in person and 78 connected online. At the opening, with his institutional greeting, the new dean of the Pontifical Liturgical Institute, Prof. Dr. Stefan Geiger, O.S.B., praised the good tradition of celebrating the anniversary of Sacrosanctum Concilium with a study day, which also has the merit of emphasizing the communal dimension of study, enhancing the fruits of the Institute's research and promoting academic discussion. Prof. Dr. Markus Tymister, editor of Ecclesia orans, presented the volume of proceedings from the 2023 study day, "L'orazione dei fedeli / The prayer of the faithful", and introduced the conference proceedings during which eight speakers from various parts of the world and from six universities in five different nations participated. The first presentation, entrusted to Prof. Dr. Ubaldo Cortoni, O.S.B.cam of the Pontifical Atheneum Sant'Anselmo, was titled "The Penitential Act from the Fribourg Conference to the Relatio Coetus a studiis 'De ordine Missae' in the papers of Cipriano Vagaggini (1964-1967)". During the presentation, the speaker exposed the fundamental points of discussion in Coetus X, with references to Paul VI's interventions, presenting previously unpublished documents. This was followed by the presentation of Prof. Dr. Radek Tichý from the Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic), which aimed to answer the question "What is the purpose of the Penitential Act?", identifying this rite as one of the introductory elements of the Eucharistic celebration in relation to all others, since it is not possible to condense all the richness of the celebrated mystery into a single rite. Thus, the penitential act is a preparatory rite that helps dispose the faithful to the Eucharistic offering. The third presentation on "The challenge of translating fratres in the Penitential Rite for the Eucharist celebration in a single-gender community. Does psycho-spiritual tension give an added dimension to the penitential act or become a rubrical debate?", offered by Richard Oduor SL.L. of the Pontifical Liturgical Institute, presented the issues connected to understanding and translating the inclusive value of the term fratres in modern languages, against the horizon of the necessary relationship between reality and rite, assembly composition and ritual language.

L’elenco dei modi di presenza di Cristo nella liturgia in SC 7 ha dato una svolta nella concezione di liturgia. Dopo secoli impregnati di una concezione piuttosto statica, interessata soprattutto alla presenza “reale” di Cristo nelle specie eucaristiche, si passa nuovamente a una concezione dinamica della liturgia come azione sacra i cui attori sono Cristo e l’assemblea. Il contributo indaga sulla genesi del testo conciliare e la sua recezione nei documenti e nei libri liturgici postconciliari. Infine si evidenziano alcune conseguenze per la prassi liturgica.
Abstract: The list of the modes of Christ’s presence in the liturgy in SC 7 has marked a turning point in the conception of liturgy. After centuries dominated by a rather static conception that is mainly concerned with the “real” presence of Christ under the Eucharistic species, there is a shift to a dynamic conception of the liturgy as a sacred action whose actors are Christ and the assembly. The contribution investigates the genesis of the conciliar text and its reception in post-conciliar liturgical documents and books. Finally, some consequences for liturgical practice are highlighted.

Mercoledì 6 dicembre 2023 presso il Pontificio Ateneo Sant'Anselmo in occasione del 60° anniversario della Costituzione liturgica Sacrosanctum Concilium del Concilio Vaticano II e della 40° annata di Ecclesia orans si è tenuta la 1° giornata di studio della rivista Ecclesia orans sul tema "L'orazione dei fedeli". L'evento è stato organizzato in collaborazione con il Pontificio Istituto Liturgico e con il patrocinio dell'Associazione Professori e Cultori di Liturgia.

The Traditional Latin Mass has existed for ages, giving it the nickname, "The Mass of the Ages." The exact date of its origin is unknown. According to tradition, our Lord taught Saint Peter how to say the Latin Mass in its earliest stages. Of course, Peter didn't say it according to the rubrics we have now. It has developed over time and according to local custom. In fact, there wasn't a universal way to say the Latin Mass until the Council of Trent. Before then, it was different in every diocese.

The post-Vatican II liturgical reform is a complex historical process, deeply influenced by the 1950s Liturgical Movement and its lasting impact on contemporary liturgy. This study explores the theological developments and ritual transformations from 'Mediator Dei' (1947) to the 'Consilium'’s instruction 'Inter Oecumenici' (1964), with particular attention to the role of the Second Vatican Council. Employing a methodological approach centered on the ambo as the 'table of the Word of God,' the study examines its evolution as a case study. The renewed emphasis on Sacred Scripture, along with the restoration of the lectionary and the Liturgy of the Word in the 1950s, played a crucial role in shaping discussions among the Council Fathers and 'Consilium' consultants. Despite initial hesitations, 'Inter Oecumenici' highlighted the need for a dedicated, visible space for the Liturgy of the Word within church buildings, marking a pivotal moment in reaffirming the ambo’s liturgical significance.

Mass Riot in the Reign of Sylvester II * Historians of the liturgy can only regard political and military historians with envy. While the latter study dramatic events and the machinations that led to them, the former must content themselves with studying unvarying traditions across centuries. Rather than storm the barricades in the course of a revolution, it seems that the medieval laity, at least in church, waited patiently at the altar rails. This state of affairs does not appear to be any different for the papacy, an institu tion steeped in liturgy, because of the difficulty of integrating an understanding of papal leadership of the public cult and the government. Yet challenging this initial impression is no simple feat. At least some of our problems are rooted in the source base. The preservation rate of papal letters before the millennium is scanty, with the many epistles from Leo I (r. 440-461), Gelasius I (r. 492-496), and Gregory I (r. 590-604) providing a false impression of the gaps scholars normally confront for the vast majority of early papal correspondence. 1 The liturgy is only one of the many themes that is badly served by this dearth. Our ignorance of the papal experience of liturgy can only to a limited degree be ameliorated by, for instance, entries in the Liber pontificalis that indicate the popes responsible for certain liturgical innovations. 2 Frustration may also creep in among scholars of the liturgy when they attempt to tackle the period from the tenth to the early-eleventh * I would like to extend my gratitude to the editors and fellow contributors of this volume, as well as the anonymous reviewer; their suggestions greatly improved the final product. Uno degli aspetti più interessanti, dal punto di vista ecclesiale, del cammino della Chiesa amazzonica di questi ultimi anni è il tentativo di realizzare un rito amazzonico, conforme al desiderio espresso da papa Francesco durante il Sinodo sull’Amazzonia (2019), di una Chiesa dal volto amazzonico. Per molti secoli, numerose comunità ecclesiali incarnate nel territorio, hanno cercato di esprimere e vivere la propria fede, secondo le culture dei loro popoli. Il Sinodo amazzonico ha riconosciuto queste pratiche e accolto questa aspirazione, incaricando la Conferenza ecclesiale dell’Amazzonia (CEAMA) di creare una commissione per elaborare un rito amazzonico.

Qualche anno fa mi fu chiesto dal direttore di Settimana, di realizzare alcuni articoli di introduzione ai diversi momenti dell’anno liturgico. Feci la scelta di seguire la mia esperienza pastorale mettendo in evidenza, prima di sintetizzare i temi teologico-liturgici, le difficoltà culturale che gli stessi generano nelle comunità cristiane e nei credenti. Sono difficoltà linguistiche, cioè di comunicazione di significati. Sono difficoltà che stanno producendo, ormai da qualche secolo, una separazione tra la vita e il momento liturgico che risulta essere sempre più formale. Le difficoltà nascono dalla separazione tra segni liturgici e significati antropologici e teologici e hanno bisogno di una nuova ricomposizione. Essa sarà possibile solo attraverso un nuovo racconto delle origini della nostra fede. Il racconto della esperienza di fede di Gesù, prima di narrare la fede in Gesù.********************************************************************************************************************A few years ago, I was asked by the director of Settimana to write some introductory articles on the different moments of the liturgical year. I chose to follow my pastoral experience by highlighting, before summarizing the theological-liturgical themes, the cultural difficulties that they generate in Christian communities and believers. They are linguistic difficulties, that is, in the communication of meanings. They are difficulties that have been producing, for some centuries now, a separation between life and the liturgical moment that is becoming increasingly formal. The difficulties arise from the separation between liturgical signs and anthropological and theological meanings and need a new recomposition. This will only be possible through a new story of the origins of our faith. The story of the experience of Jesus' faith, before narrating faith in Jesus.*********************************************************************************************************************Hace unos años, el director de Settimana me pidió que escribiera algunos artículos introductorios sobre los distintos momentos del año litúrgico. He optado por seguir mi experiencia pastoral poniendo de relieve, antes de resumir los temas teológico-litúrgicos, las dificultades culturales que éstos generan en las comunidades cristianas y en los creyentes. Se trata de dificultades lingüísticas, es decir, dificultades para comunicar significados. Son dificultades que vienen produciendo, desde hace algunos siglos, una separación entre la vida y el momento litúrgico cada vez más formal. Las dificultades surgen de la separación entre signos litúrgicos y significados antropológicos y teológicos y exigen una nueva recomposición. Esto sólo será posible a través de una nueva narrativa de los orígenes de nuestra fe. El relato de la experiencia de fe de Jesús, antes de narrar la fe en Jesús.

The acclamation after the consecration of the bread and wine in the Roman Mass has its sources in the liturgical traditions of the East. The introduction of the acclamation beginning in 1968 occurred in an environment increasingly aware of Syrian and Alexandrian liturgical practices, encouraging active participation of the faithful and emphasising the paschal mystery rather than just the Lord’s passion. The reception of the acclamations, through translation, musical form and usage, has varied widely even on the continent of Europe. Imaginative reception in local churches offers some ideas for future development of the acclamation even in the typical edition of the Roman Missal.

The dialogue of the Church with the world in the post-patristic period: the theology of the episcopal ministry at the Council of Trent, the First Vatican Council and the Second Vatican Council. An outline of a (possible) lecture from the Orthodox perspective. One of the most significant aspects of the ecumenical dialogue regards the episcopal ministry. This dialogue also reveals that, unfortunately, over the centuries, the separation between the Christians of the various Churches and ecclesial communities was not static, but it permanently became more and more profound, especially concerning the understanding of the learning about the Church and, inherently, of the sacerdotal ministry. If between the Orthodox and the Catholic Churches there is an agreement in principal on the continuity with the Una Sancta Catholica et Apostolica Church of the first millennium, the situation is different when comes about the ecclesiological models offered by the theology of a Protestant tradition. Things become even more clear when they are looked at by the point of view offered by the learning about the episcopal ministry that the Catholic theology of the second Vatican Council perceives as being into a continuity with that of the Council of Trent and the first Vatican Council. This short study aims to emphasize an alternative reading of this theology from an Orthodox perspective, which is intented to be a fraternal and irenic one.

Proprio perché è un gesto di forte implicazione relazionale, nella liturgia viene riservato ad occasioni particolari: si bacia esclusivamente la presenza di Cristo nei suoi principali segni sacramentali: l'altare e l'evangeliario. Per questo, il bacio è associato sempre al gesto del venerare ed è accompagnato il più delle volte dal silenzio o da una preghiera sussurrata nel cuore. Solo in seconda istanza, questo gesto si estende alla presenza di Dio nei fratelli nel bacio di pace. Tutti gli atri baci di devozione, rivolti ad immagini e oggetti sacri (come la croce, la stola, le statue, le reliquie eccetera) ne sono, in un certo senso, un'estensione. Baciare infatti è un gesto di forte valenza simbolica e di intenso coinvolgimento interiore: una eccessiva moltiplicazione ne svilisce il valore. È stata proprio la riforma liturgica del Concilio vaticano II a volerlo particolarmente prezioso, da riservare in modo esclusivo ai due momenti culminanti della celebrazione eucaristica: il bacio del vangelo, vertice della Liturgia della Parola, e il bacio dell'altare, centro e culmine di tutta la

a turning point in the conception of liturgy. After centuries dominated by a
rather static conception that is mainly concerned with the “real” presence of Christ under the Eucharistic species, there is a shift to a dynamic conception of the liturgy as a sacred action whose actors are Christ and the assembly. The contribution investigates the genesis of the conciliar text and its reception in post-conciliar liturgical documents and books. Finally, some consequences for liturgical practice are highlighted.

Das Zweite Vatikanische Konzil ist für eine Analyse der internationalen Situation zu Beginn der 1960er-Jahre integral. Europa war in seinem Selbstverständnis unsicher geworden, die Gewichte in der internationalen Arena hatten sich dramatisch verschoben. Der Aufsatz ordnet das Konzil daher in einen dreifachen Kontext ein: den Prozess der Dekolonisierung, den Ost-West-Konflikt, der mit der Kuba-Krise noch während des Konzils auf einen neuerlichen dramatischen Höhepunkt zusteuerte, doch danach in eine Phase der Entspannung mündete. Schließlich wurde im Westen Europas eine gesellschaftliche Ordnung durchgesetzt, die ich das "liberale Europa" nenne. Denn der Siegeslauf der Konsumgesellschaft in den westlichen Ländern ging nicht spurlos an Religion und Kirche vorüber.

Die Feier der Eucharistie greift irdische Materialien und elementare menschliche Vorgänge auf und macht sie zu Zeichen der Präsenz Jesu Christi und seines Heils wirkens. Zugleich will sie in ihren Gebeten und Symbolen auch Stärkung verantwort licher Lebensgestaltung sein und als Ausgangspunkt des Dienstes an der Verwand lung der Welt in Alltag, Beruf und Politik entdeckt werden. Insofern sind Versamm lung, gemeinsames Mahl, Versöhnung und Frieden, Sättigung der Hungrigen nicht nur Inhalte eines Zuspruchs für einen selbst, sondern auch Auftrag zu entsprechen dem Handeln. Um diese Implikationen explizit zu machen und als Profil einer erneu erten eucharistischen Frömmigkeit sichtbar zu machen, dient das Leitwort des Eucharistischen Weltkongresses "Für das Leben der Welt" als programmatischer Aus gangspunkt der folgenden Überlegungen, die auch auf die Festschrift der Theologi schen Fakultät der Universität München Bezug nehmen. Das Motto des Eucharistischen Weltkongresses in München 1960, der großen Brotrede im Johannesevangelium (Joh 6,51) entnommen, ist sprachpragmatisch gleichermaßen Zu sage, die aktivierend vergegenwärtigt wird, wie Bekenntnis, das denen angeboten wird, die diese Zusage glaubend auf sich beziehen. Es will aber ganz offensichtlich auch eine Gesamtrichtung markieren, nach der diejenigen, die in der Eucharistiefeier Gemeinschaft mit Christus und Anteil an seinem Leben erlangen, ihre Lebensführung und ihr Handeln nachfolgend ausrichten sollen, nämlich "für das Leben in der Welt". Die Hingabe Jesu Christi in den Tod und ihre Feier in der Eucharistie werden also als ein "Für" etwas ande res, die Welt, akzentuiert und als Zielform christlicher Existenz genommen. Darin liegt faktisch, wenn auch bloß angedeutet, eine doppelte Distanzierung. Nämlich zum einen von einer Frömmigkeit, die den Sinn der Zusage auf das eigene Heil konzent riert, und zum anderen von einer Frömmigkeit, deren innere Zielrichtung der Rückzug aus der Welt und die Distanz von ihr darstellt. Beide Formen von Frömmigkeit waren am Vorabend des II. Vatikanischen Konzils im Wahmehmungskreis auch der Durchschnitts katholiken durchaus präsent: die eine optisch durch den auf den Volksmissionskreuzen fast aller Pfarrkirchen aufgebrachten Spruch "Rette deine Seele", die andere durch die Sprache des Gebets, in der die Rede von "der Welt" ein Synonym war für Uneigentlich keit, Ablenkung vom Wesentlichen, Verführung bis hin zu Verdorbenheit. "Für das Leben in der Welt" ist demgegenüber das mit dem Evangelium formulierte Programm, mit dem in der Eucharistie gegenwärtigen Christus die Welt am Leben zu er halten und sie zu durchwirken. Oder, wie man mit traditionellen Formeln sagen konnte, die Welt zu "retten", mit dem Geist der Liebe zu "durchdringen", sie "zu erneuern" und "zu heiligen". Solche Formeln rufen allerdings leicht Herrschafts-und Eroberungskonnotationen und Allmachtsfantasien hervor und verstellen dann unter Umständen, dass das 132 Konrad Hilpert "Für" auch stellvertretend, solidarisch, dienend, Verbindung schaffend oder auch bloß akzeptierend gemeint sein kann-aus der Kraft heraus, welche die Teilnahme an der Fei er der Eucharistie freisetzt.1

Das Hochgebet oder Eucharistiegebet gilt als zentrales Gebet, das vor versammelter Gemeinde gesprochen wird. Wie im Herbst 2022 eine langjährige Gemeindeleiterin in der Deutschschweiz in Absprache mit dem Vorsteher der Online-Feier einen Part des Hochgebets übernahm, kam es zu grossem Medienecho. Ohne näher darauf einzugehen, äussert sich hier Stephan Schmid-Keiser zu Charakter und Vollzug des Hochgebets.

Zum 150. Jahrestag seiner Eröffnung hat Bernward Schmidt eine solide und prägnante Darstellung des Ereignisses 1 "Erstes Vatikanisches Konzil" vorgelegt. Das Werk lässt sich in drei etwa gleich große Blöcke unterteilen: der historische Rahmen, der Ablauf des Konzils und dessen Folgen bzw. Rezeption. Im historischen Rahmen eröffnet S. sein Werk mit einer geistesgeschichtlichen Hinführung, die sowohl die Entwicklungen der säkularen Welt als auch der theologischen Schulen innerhalb der katholischen Kirche beleuchtet. Hierbei liegt sein besonderes Augenmerk auf der ideengeschichtlichen Entwicklung des Bischofs-und Papstamtes. Nach einer kurzen Biographie Pius' IX. folgt eine Darstellung der Vorbereitung und Durchführung des Konzils, die von den textredaktionellen Vorbereitungen über die Organisation der Debatten bis zum verfrühten Ende des Konzils während der Sitzungspause im Jahr 1870 führt. Im dritten Teil werden die Konzilsbeschlüsse im Detail dargelegt sowie eine Übersicht zeitgenössischer medialer Darstellungen und der Rezeptionsgeschichte gegeben. Den Rahmen um diese drei Hauptteile bildet jeweils eine kurze Reflexion auf bzw. Einordnung in aktuelle theologische Debatten, für die S. das Erste Vatikanische Konzil als bedeutende Schnittstelle identifiziert und für die er als Lehre aus der Geschichte einen offenen und wertschätzenden Diskurs einfordert. Auf die Frage hin, was dieses Buch leisten soll, gibt der Vf. selbst im ersten Kap. die Antwort, dass es sich um eine Hinführung zum Thema handeln soll: "Es werden daher auch keine neuen Forschungsergebnisse geboten, sondern eine Zusammenschau der vorhandenen Literatur. Diese Zusammenschau ist schon deswegen wichtig, weil nicht nur der bloße Ablauf des Konzils beschrieben werden soll. Stattdessen möchte dieses Buch das Konzil historisieren und in die Kontexte seiner Zeit einbetten." (15) Dieser Selbsteinschätzung ist sicherlich zuzustimmen; besonders der mittlere Teil des Buches, der sich mit der unmittelbaren Vorgeschichte und dem Ablauf des Konzils beschäftigt, istwie angekündigt-weitgehend eine Zusammenfassung des dreibändigen Werks von Klaus Schatz 2 , zu dem nur vereinzelt Details ergänzt werden. Daher gelten für dieses Werk Kritiken, die man auch an Schatz herantragen könnte: so etwa die starke Fokussierung auf die deutschsprachige Theologie bei

Relazione presentata al Convegno dell'Associazione professori di liturgia su  "Liturgia e ministeri ecclesiali". Si ripercorre dal punto di vista storico l'affermarsi del tema "partecipazione attiva" in relazione ai movimenti sociali del primo Novecento soprattutto in Belgio. Si conclude con alcuni cenni alla ripresa più teologica del tema in Francia  dopo la seconda guerra mondiale.

La liturgia porta a vivere un’esperienza iniziatica, ossia
trasformativa del modo di pensare e di comportarsi. Alla luce di questa affermazione, l’articolo propone alcune riflessioni a partire dalla formula di consegna del pane e del vino nel rito di Ordinazione dei presbiteri. I quattro verbi chiave – ricevere, rendersi conto, imitare, conformare – delineano l’identità presbiterale a partire dalla logica del servizio al popolo santo di Dio e dalla umile disponibilità a lasciarsi trasformare da ciò che si celebra.

Al pie de cada texto y entre paréntesis se anotan también sus fuentes, cuando éstas se han mencionado. Todo ello lo hemos hecho con la esperanza de facilitar así el estudio científico de estas importantes normas canónicas. En esta breve introducción nos limitaremos simplemente a dar algunos datos básicos sobre los diversos esquemas, a describir la simbología empleada, y a apuntar las referencias que hoy conocemos donde se explican algunas de las variaciones en los distintos textos. Célkitűzések / Aims and Scope A Disegno alapító szerkesztőinek célja, hogy egy, a kreatív szakmai és tudományos világban meghatározó szerepet betöltő, szemeszterenként megjelenő, lektorált (ti. double-blind peer review) szabad folyóiratot (ti. free journal) hozzon létre a designkultúra nemzetközi rangú képviseletére és kritikai természetű analízisére. A designkultúra fogalmát tágan értjük: célunk a tervezett környezet, s a vele kapcsolatos praxisok és diskurzusok világának együttes vizsgálata. Ez a szemlélet túllép a művészet, a vizuális kultúra és a design világának megkülönböztetésén, s a kreativitáshoz kötődő témák összessége iránt fogékony. Poszt-diszciplináris szellemi vállalkozásunk a designkultúra minden potenciális szereplőjétől-gyakorló alkotóktól, teoretikusoktól, kritikusoktól, menedzserektől és oktatóktól-vár kritikai természetű tanulmányokat, esszéket és recenziókat. Amellett, hogy ily módon vitafórumot biztosítunk a designkultúrával törődő szerzők számára, különleges célunk, hogy a designkultúráról folyó beszéd létjogosultságát erősítsük a hazai tudományosságban, s így a témával kapcsolatos téves előítéletek és igen gyakran félrevezető beidegződések kritikáját nyújtsuk olvasóink számára.

L'articolo parla della nuova traduzione del Messale Romano in lingua italiana. Alla prima domenica di Avvento del 2020 in tutte le comunità di lingua italiana sono entrate in vigore diverse novità: oltre ad una attualizzazione delle orazioni e dell'ordinario della Messa, si può notare una maggiore sensibilità al rapporto tempo / eternità.

Affermare, con papa Francesco, che il cammino della sinodalità è il cammino che Dio si aspetta dalla Chiesa del terzo millennio comporta «una revisione dell'identità, configurazione e missione della Chiesa» che dipende strettamente «dal fatto che abbiamo compreso e vogliamo veramente assumere le implicazioni del modello di Chiesa come popolo di Dio come è stato presentato dalla Lumen gentium»: occorre riconoscere «il carattere normativo della categoria "popolo di Dio"». Da questa «nuova ermeneutica» conciliare discende il ripensamento dei modelli decisionali, «in cui l'elaborazione delle decisioni (decision-making) sia vincolante per i pastori (decision-taking)»: la sinodalità, sebbene «si inizi nel camminare e nell'ascoltare, e si realizzi nel riunirsi», si completa solo «nel discernere ed elaborare insieme le decisioni». Non è dunque «il popolo di Dio che deve essere integrato nella gerarchia» partecipando alle strutture episcopali, ma è il vescovo che è chiamato «a situarsi e viversi come uno dei fedeli tra il popolo di Dio, ascoltando la voce di tutti i fedeli», raccogliendo ed esprimendo «il sensus Ecclesiae totius populi e non solo quello dei suoi pari».

Quando si celebra una bella Messa? Lì dove si manifesta
la bellezza della comunità che celebra, in quella comunità gioiosa che vive e celebra il mistero dell’amore di Dio
che si dona in un tessuto di relazioni comunitarie. Oggi,
la vera sfida non si gioca sulla partecipazione dei singoli
ma nella partecipazione di tutta l’assemblea celebrante.
Solo una comunità partecipante può essere quel segno
credibile anche per l’uomo e la donna del nostro tempo.
