Vatican II

O jubileu é uma bela oportunidade para refletir sobre as implicações do perdão, da reconciliação, e da esperança. Ao mesmo tempo, continua carregando consigo, desde o primeiro jubileu de 1300, o cada vez mais incômodo conceito e a aparentemente ultrapassada prática das indulgências. Foi justamente esta que criou as 95 teses de Martim Lutero, propondo um debate que, ao ser refutado e excomungado seu autor, resultou na separação de caminhos e no surgimento de igrejas novas que reclamavam para si estar em melhor sintonia com a Sagrada Escritura do que a igreja existente. Não se trata de um dogma nem de uma doutrina de alta importância na hierarquia das verdades, e de uma prática provavelmente cada vez menos compreendida pelo povo católico. Continua, no entanto, incomodando as relações ecumênicas. Baseada em documentos do magistério e abordagens teológicas católicas e evangélicas, o  presente artigo reflete, inicialmente, de forma mais ampla sobre o jubileu ordinário atual e seu antecessor de 2000, traça uma análise da bula do papa Francisco, destaca questões críticas do debate sobre as indulgências e apresenta uma visão luterana do tema para, concluindo, conduzir uma conversação ecumênica destacando o potencial caráter terapêutico da igreja, enquanto não vê espaço para indulgências na teologia e igreja atuais.

Eis um artigo de divulgação que não só notifica a identificação de um manuscrito raro mas também analisa duas perspectivas prévias à consideração do manuscrito em si mesmo: o senso histórico na cultura brasileira e alguns elementos da cultura escolar colonial. Cet article explore les dimensions géopolitiques et géo-religieuses d'Israël, fondamentales pour comprendre la crise actuelle qui secoue le Moyen-Orient et affecte le monde entier. À travers une analyse des textes sacrés (Ancien et Nouveau Testaments), enrichie par les interprétations des auteurs chrétiens évangéliques, il démontre comment ces visions influencent profondément les enjeux politiques, religieux et internationaux contemporains. L'objectif est de décrypter les racines spirituelles du conflit israélo-palestinien, souvent ignorées dans les analyses purement séculières, tout en soulignant leur impact global.

In this article the author examines some of the factors conditioning the context of parish life in Australia today and proposes some fundamental priorities that should shape a parish's sense of mission in response to that context. A wide range of issues is listed, from globalisation to the dramatic downturn in church attendance in recent times. Cause for hope and courage in responding to such diverse challenges, it is proposed, is to be found in focusing on Jesus' own primary concern, the reign of God; finding inspiration in biblical more than secular models of leadership; and avoiding the temptation to turn inward.

The Second Vatican Council was an event of conversion for the participating bishops, and the council's documents propose a vision for the conversion of the Catholic ecclesial imagination. The author argues that this ecclesial conversion entails a refashioning of the Catholic Church's understanding of the divine-human relationship in history. This relationship includes the divine-ecclesial relationship and, consequently, relationships within the Church. The article concludes by examining two particular dimensions of the council's call for ongoing ecclesial conversion that remain unfulfilled.

La relación entre teología y espiritualidad, la necesidad de dar una respuesta a la modernidad, y el empeño por subrayar la unidad entre la fe y la vida del cristiano constituyen la base de los principios teológico-espirituales de la renovación de la espiritualidad cristiana en el Concilio Vaticano II. La persona cristiana se comprende desde el misterio de Jesucristo y el misterio de la Trinidad, en la Iglesia y en el mundo. A partir del misterio de Cristo, la espiritualidad cristiana se ilumina en tres puntos nucleares: en la comunión con Dios (Dei Verbum y Sacrosanctum Concilium); en la llamada universal a la santidad y a la misión apostólica (Lumen Gentium y Apostolicam Actuositatem); en la espiritualidad vivida en el mundo y para la transformación del mundo (Gaudium et Spes).

This reflection explores the rightful place and proper use of musical instruments in Catholic liturgical worship. Anchored on Article 120 of Sacrosanctum Concilium and key ecclesiastical documents like Musicam Sacram and Tra le Sollecitudini, it defines sacred instrumental music as that which is created for worship and is characterized by holiness, artistic value, and universality. It critiques contemporary liturgical practices in Nigeria, especially the frequent misuse of secular and banal instrumental styles under the guise of inculturation. It emphasizes the organ as the preeminent instrument in the Latin Church, extolling its capacity to sacralize worship space and elevate the minds of the faithful. Forms of instrumental arrangements such as the organ, gospel bands, native instruments and orchestras are discussed, with a call for all to conform to the sacred nature of liturgy. The essay concludes with practical guidelines on the use of musical instruments during different liturgical seasons and underscores the instrument's supporting-not overwhelming-role in worship.

The ethical motifs entrenched in the 95 theses of Martin Luther has left some lasting implications on modern Christianity; the historic rot in the 16 th century Catholic Church which undermined the very heart of Christianity and the core Christian values, paved way for immorality Simony and abuse of office threw the Church into centuries of bleakness and prolonged darkness. Godliness became a means of financial gain as Tetzels sold indulgence in the name of salvation. Today prosperity messengers, miracle-seed merchants and money doublers brazenly display their skills on "sacred" altars. Witchdoctors now disguise as 'prophets' and 'powerful men of God misleading many into heresy and apostasy. Syncretism and obscurantism are common while ritualism have taken public space in media hyping. More than ever before, Christianity is mingled with paganism, superstitious beliefs; compromise, apostasy, pride, arrogance, worldliness and impurity have replaced the humility and simplicity of Christ and his followers. This paper adopts the multidimensional approach, drawing insights from the historical and theological methods. Findings show that the same case scenario which Luther's 95 theses addressed is prevalent in the Church today. The paper therefore, recommends a reformation that would rid the church of these worrisome vices that have bedeviled Christianity.

Martin Luther is a turning point both historically and in terms of Christian theology. He made very serious reminders to the Catholic Church with his works and the "Theology of the Cross" that he announced. It is possible to see the traces of this reminder in the social and liturgical life that changed with Luther. In this study, first the pre-Luther period will be mentioned, and then Luther's theological studies and discourses against his contemporaries, the Theology of the Cross and the Theology of Glory will be examined comparatively, and Luther's perspective on the concept of "grace" will be scrutinized.

Since the mid-1980s, the "spirit of Vatican II" has been an embattled concept in discussions pertaining to the council's reception. After the council, so-called progressive Catholics invoked this term to call for developments in the church that did not have direct support in the documents of Vatican II but which they thought were consistent with its spirit. 1 With the pontificate of John Paul II (1978-2013) and its effort to counteract the centrifugal forces unleashed by the council, the "spirit of Vatican II" came under heavy criticism as a legitimate category for understanding and implementing the council. By the end of Pope Benedict XVI's pontificate, the "spirit of Vatican II" was deemed a persona non grata. Since then, however, it has been revived and-to some extentrehabilitated. 2 This has to do with a new phase of the council's reception inaugurated by Pope Francis. Lancé à l’été 2021, le documentaire Les Fils de Manon Cousin a braqué
les projecteurs sur l’expérience des prêtres-ouvriers dans le quartier
montréalais de Pointe-Saint-Charles. Paradoxalement, cette problématique a été très peu explorée par l’historiographie québécoise. Il y a là
un vide historiographique à combler. Cette note de recherche présente
un bilan de l’historiographie sur les prêtres-ouvriers, tant en France
qu’au Québec, puis esquisse quelques avenues de recherche autour de
cette problématique, en s’appuyant sur l’expérience pionnière des Fils
de la Charité dans Pointe-Saint-Charles.

Nous allons envisager le magistère du pape François à travers l'une des questions majeures de notre colloque, celle du concours ou de la concurrence des deux modèles théologico-canoniques susceptibles de rendre compte de la gouvernance dans l'Église : celui du triplex munus des ministres ordonnés dans l'unité de la sacra potestas d'une part, celui du binôme pouvoir d'ordre / pouvoir de juridiction d'autre part. Le premier modèle fut élaboré et privilégié par le concile Vatican II, alors que le second avait dominé dans l'Église latine depuis le moyen-âge. Le concile, tout en assumant cette inflexion doctrinale majeure, impliquée dans la sacramentalité de l'épiscopat, s'est cependant gardé de pousser jusqu'au bout une logique exclusiviste selon laquelle il aurait substitué simpliciter le premier modèle au second. L'intervention de Paul VI, avec la Nota praevia de novembre 1964, y aida providentiellement, en fixant un équilibre d'autant plus précaire qu'explicité a minima. Si aujourd'hui certains estiment pouvoir choisir le second modèle en négligeant voire disloquant le premier, leur tentative semble vouée à l'échec, du seul fait de l'autorité des textes conciliaires, dont l'interprétation, sur ce point, ne laisse guère place au doute. Plutôt que de concurrence adversative entre ces deux modèles, il convient donc de poser le problème en termes de concours et de complémentarité. Comment parvenir à articuler ces deux modèles que tant la tradition de l'Église que son magistère récent et sa vie actuelle font apparaître l'un et l'autre comme incontournables ? La question revêt d'autant plus d'actualité que François, le premier des papes contemporains à n'avoir pris aucune part aux travaux du Concile, semble ne pas se sentir aussi conditionné, voire contraint par les textes conciliaires -en tout cas nettement moins -que ses deux prédécesseurs. La doctrine du triplex munus ne joue aucun rôle structurant dans son enseignement. Certains de ses actes, selon une lecture rapide, peuvent même donner l'impression d'un affranchissement à cet égard, comme s'il voulait revaloriser le binôme antéconciliaire pouvoir d'ordre / pouvoir de juridiction, quitte à sembler offusquer plus ou moins franchement l'autorité doctrinale du triplex munus pourtant canonisée par le concile. De fait, dans la perspective d'une dénonciation insistante du « cléricalisme » et d'un meilleur partage du pouvoir dans l'Église, le tandem pouvoir d'ordre / pouvoir de juridiction se présente, au moins à première vue, comme un outil plus pertinent que le triplex munus impliqué dans l'unité de la sacra potestas. Ne permet-il pas, en dissociant radicalement l'exercice du pouvoir de gouvernement ecclésial d'un enracinement nécessaire dans le sacrement de l'ordre, d'ouvrir largement à des laïcs l'accès à des fonctions de responsabilité ? Il n'est pas inintéressant de constater comment le binôme ordre / juridiction, après avoir servi durant le Concile de rempart pour la minorité conservatrice contre les menaces que la collégialité épiscopale représentait envers la primauté pontificale, est aujourd'hui utilisé à des fins réformistes, en vue de secouer le monopole clérical sur le gouvernement de l'Église. Sans prétendre ici examiner l'ensemble du magistère du pape François, nous nous en tiendrons à deux lieux emblématiques : le synode sur l'Amazonie et la réforme de la curie pontificale. Dans le contexte d'une réflexion sur la situation de l'Église en Amazonie, le Synode des évêques de 2019 devait affronter le défi de l'inculturation, en particulier de ses incidences sur l'organisation ecclésiale et les ministères. Comment discerner des modalités de gouvernance adaptées à une situation de précarité, d'isolement des communautés locales et, en particulier, de manque de prêtres, et donc de rareté des célébrations eucharistiques ? Dans sa troisième partie « Défis et espérance », au chapitre IV consacré à « L'organisation des communautés », l'Instrumentum laboris pré-synodal, publié en juin 2019, aborde frontalement, sans circonlocution, le problème théologico-canonique en invitant, contre le cléricalisme, à revaloriser le binôme ordre / juridiction que la constitution conciliaire Lumen gentium avait délibérément ignoré : L'Église doit s'incarner dans les cultures amazoniennes qui possèdent un sens élevé de la communauté, de l'égalité et de la solidarité ; en conséquence, le cléricalisme, sous les diverses formes par lesquelles il se manifeste, n'est pas acceptable. Les peuples natifs possèdent une riche tradition d'organisation sociale dans laquelle l'autorité s'exerce à tour de rôle avec un profond sentiment de service. À partir de cette expérience d'organisation, il serait opportun de reconsidérer l'idée que l'exercice de la juridiction (pouvoir de gouvernement) doit être liée dans tous les domaines (sacramentel, judiciaire, administratif) et de manière permanente au sacrement de l'Ordre 1 . Tant le manque de prêtres que la culture locale invitent, selon une logique inductive de théologie pastorale, à interroger la prégnance du « cléricalisme » qui limite par principe les fonctions de gouvernement pastoral à des ministres revêtus du caractère sacerdotal. A cette fin, le chemin proposé consiste tout simplement à « reconsidérer », c'est-à-dire, relativiser voire modifier la doctrine et le droit actuels de l'Église qui, selon l'interprétation la plus obvie de Lumen gentium, s'appuient sur l'indissociabilité des tria munera pour réserver les charges de gouvernement pastoral à des clercs. Sans y renvoyer explicitement, ce texte met en cause des formulations comme celle du canon 274, § 1, selon lequel « seuls les clercs peuvent recevoir des offices dont l'exercice requiert le pouvoir d'ordre ou le pouvoir de gouvernement ecclésiastique 2 ». L'Instrumentum laboris ne conteste pas le fait que seuls des clercs puissent recevoir des offices dont l'exercice requiert le pouvoir d'ordre. Une telle revendication exprimerait en effet une contradiction dans les termes, puisque le pouvoir d'ordre ne peut se transmettre qu'à travers le sacrement de l'ordre, lequel fait nécessairement de ceux qui le reçoivent des clercs. Par contre, les auteurs du texte ne voient pas d'impossibilité de principe à ce que des laïcs reçoivent un pouvoir de gouvernement et exercent la juridiction. Ou plutôt, ils suggèrent une relativisation du principe, pourtant issu de Lumen gentium, selon lequel la potestas sacra est spécifiquement transmise « à celui qui a reçu le sacerdoce ministériel », à travers l'ordination, afin que non seulement « il accomplisse le sacrifice eucharistique in persona Christi » (pouvoir d'ordre) mais aussi qu'il « forme et conduise le peuple sacerdotal 3 »,

Conversion for the individual Christian is a constant calling, embedded in the tug of faith itself. God is always drawing the believer to deeper and deeper intimacy with God, away from a self-absorbed life to a Godward-directed life, and to a way of living that embraces self-giving love-"Love God with all your heart"; "Love your neighbor as yourself." So too with ecclesial conversion. God continually calls the church, as a people, to greater fidelity to God in its covenant commitment as a community of faith, to a more authentic worship, to a spirit of reconciliation within and outside the community, and to a deeper commitment to generosity, justice, and compassion. Like other councils before it, the Second Vatican Council set out to reform the Catholic Church. As Pope John Paul II later saw it, in Ut Unum Sint: "In the teaching of the Second Vatican Council there is a clear connection between renewal, conversion and reform." 1 Moreover, he says: "The council calls for personal conversion as well as for communal conversion." 2 According to Ladislas Örsy, the council meeting was "an event of conversion." 3 Joseph Ratzinger called it a "spiritual awakening" for the church. 4 This conversion event and the call to ecclesial conversion, which its documents encapsulate, continue to challenge us. In my paper this morning, I propose that Vatican II, in turning anew to God, marks a conversion of the Catholic ecclesial imagination. Specifically, I argue this entails a refashioning of the church's understanding of the divine-human relationship in history. This includes the divine-ecclesial relationship and, consequently, relationships within the church. I will then select just two particular dimensions of the council's call for ongoing ecclesial conversion that remain unfulfilled. For 400 years after the Council of Trent, a juridical model of the church dominated Roman Catholicism. Shifts towards a broader ecclesiology began to emerge in the nineteenth century. Despite the attempts to repress any deviations from the official theology after the crisis of Roman Catholic Modernism in the early twentieth century, various renewal movements, known as ressourcement, in the decades between the world wars brought forth a period of rich ecclesiological research, with emphasis given to notions such as the Mystical Body, the People of God, the church as mystery, as sacrament, and as communio. The Second Vatican Council incorporated many of these developments into its vision for renewal and reform of the Roman Catholic Church. Over half a century after Vatican II, a new phase in its reception is emerging with the pontificate of Pope Francis.

L'impossible substitution se présente comme un ouvrage de théologie, en ce qu'il s'agit d'une enquête de théologie historique consacrée aux facteurs ayant conduit à la séparation du christianisme d'avec le judaïsme. Jean-Michel GARRIGUES [J.-M. G.], théologien catholique spécialiste des Pères de l'Église, propose un « effort d'intelligence théologique » de la « blessure » (p. 30) que représente cette séparation, afin de la guérir et de la refermer. Pour ce faire, J.-M. G. entend avancer un nouveau récit des origines, prenant appui sur le Nouveau Testament, sans écarter la Tradition. Cet article met en lumière le rôle joué par l'Église catholique, de par ses épiscopats dans la culture citoyenne en Afrique. A ce sujet, la violation flagrante des droits du citoyen ces dernières décennies a retenu l'attention du clergé. Ainsi, ayant été longtemps restreints à la fonction de messagers du Christ, les prêtres catholiques ont transcendé ce cadre pour se muer en Apôtres de la communauté citoyenne. A partir d'un examen socio-politique, le résultat est que les conférences épiscopales nationales participent à l'éveil citoyen à travers l'enseignement, la sensibilisation et la formation politique des citoyens de par son service « justice et paix ». Afin de toucher plus conséquemment la masse, l'implémentation d'une pastorale citoyenne dans tous ses démembrements, à la fois au niveau régional, sous régional et national est une nécessité.

Mass Riot in the Reign of Sylvester II * Historians of the liturgy can only regard political and military historians with envy. While the latter study dramatic events and the machinations that led to them, the former must content themselves with studying unvarying traditions across centuries. Rather than storm the barricades in the course of a revolution, it seems that the medieval laity, at least in church, waited patiently at the altar rails. This state of affairs does not appear to be any different for the papacy, an institu tion steeped in liturgy, because of the difficulty of integrating an understanding of papal leadership of the public cult and the government. Yet challenging this initial impression is no simple feat. At least some of our problems are rooted in the source base. The preservation rate of papal letters before the millennium is scanty, with the many epistles from Leo I (r. 440-461), Gelasius I (r. 492-496), and Gregory I (r. 590-604) providing a false impression of the gaps scholars normally confront for the vast majority of early papal correspondence. 1 The liturgy is only one of the many themes that is badly served by this dearth. Our ignorance of the papal experience of liturgy can only to a limited degree be ameliorated by, for instance, entries in the Liber pontificalis that indicate the popes responsible for certain liturgical innovations. 2 Frustration may also creep in among scholars of the liturgy when they attempt to tackle the period from the tenth to the early-eleventh * I would like to extend my gratitude to the editors and fellow contributors of this volume, as well as the anonymous reviewer; their suggestions greatly improved the final product. The traditional understanding of gender and family is increasingly challenged, leading to confusion and a decline in commitment to marriage. This shift threatens the moral foundation of society, making it essential to reaffirm the family’s role in moral formation. Grounded in Revelation and the Church’s Magisterium, the family remains the primary school of moral values, crucial for individual and societal development.

Este artículo examina los desafíos contemporáneos de la epistemología
de la teología moral, destacando la necesidad de superar anteriores visiones hegemónicas y monolíticas del conocimiento. Subraya la importancia de interpretar continuamente la revelación divina  considerando su naturaleza encarnada e histórica, permitiendo una hermenéutica dinámica de ésta adecuada a los desafíos actuales. La construcción de la epistemología de la ética teológica contemporánea
propuesta busca ser interdisciplinar y compleja, abogando por una teología moral que respete su autonomía epistemológica mientras se enriquece con aportes interdisciplinarios, evitando la fragmentación del conocimiento. Se examinan enfoques como el cuadrilátero wesleyano, la teoría del pensamiento complejo de Edgar Morin y el método de Bernard Lonergan para enriquecer esta perspectiva. Propone una epistemología abierta, relacional y permeable, que permita una exploración más
amplia del ser humano, el mundo, y aquello que lo trasciende.

ABSTRACT: This article examines the contemporary challenges of epistemology in moral theology, emphasizing the need to overcome previous hegemonic and monolithic views of knowledge. It underscores the importance of continuously interpreting divine Revelation, considering its incarnate and historical nature, fostering a dynamic hermeneutic approach that addresses contemporary challenges. The construction of the proposed epistemology of contemporary theological ethics aims to be interdisciplinary and complex, advocating for a moral theology that respects its epistemological autonomy while enriching itself with interdisciplinary contributions, thus avoiding knowledge fragmentation. Approaches such as the Wesleyan Quadrilateral, Edgar Morin’s Theory of complex thought, and Bernard Lonergan’s Method are examined to enrich this perspective. It proposes an open, relational, and permeable epistemology that allows for a broader exploration of human beings, the world, and that which transcends them.

The three-stage process that ended with the writing of the four canonical Gospels, which Sancta Mater Ecclesia refers to as "Our Lords Teaching," "The Apostles' Teaching," and "The Four Evangelists," 1 can also respectively be referred to as the "Jesus" stage, the "Resurrection" stage, and the "Written" stage. In discussing this process I will begin by first identifying and describing each of the three stages themselves. To further understand this process, I will indicate how the four Catholic Fundamentals of incarnation, remembrance, discipleship/ministry, and sacrament are at work in each particular stage. 2 The first stage of Our Lord's Teaching takes place in the first third of the first century, from about AD 1-33. At this stage Jesus himself, along with his deeds and teachings, personified the Gospel as living and demonstrated. Vatican II represented a fresh start for studies in missiology and ecumenical theology. Especially its call to contextualize and rethink old theological dogmas was well received in many churches in Latin America and Africa that were involved in a process of liberation from old colonial structures. In South Africa the church struggle resulted in the formulation of the Kairos document in 1985. It has since inspired theologians in Palestine/Israel to formulate a Palestinian Kairos document in 2009. In both documents the concepts of reconciliation and restorative justice are used to express interrelated realities. A group of international theologians marked the 500 year of the Reformation by publishing a declaration in January 2017 in Wittenberg, Germany, in line with the two Kairos documents. It looks briefly at the idea of what was Church prior to Vatican II and then addresses the vision of Vatican II's Church by looking at the document Lumen Gentium. It then turns to the 2014 document Sensus Fedei, which builds upon some of the discussion of the People of God. Richard Gaillardetz offers an important vision of Vatican II and a model of the noncompetitive church. While pneumatology is not the main focus, it can hardly be avoided as Lumen Gentium is filled with references to the working of the Holy Spirit when discussing the Church. The paper takes a feminist approach to better understand what is meant by the People of God and the Body of Christ as developed in the council. The concern is that this model of Church offered in Lumen Gentium is both patriarchal and hierarchal and is not life-giving to the Body of Christ. Ultimately, the model of the Trinity as perichōrēsis, relationship, provides a way to envision Church in a noncompetitive model which will speak to the entire people of God.

O  artigo  tem  por  objetivo  verificar  a  viabilidade  e  aplicabilidade  do conceito  teológico  de  recepção  na  realidade  concreta  da  vida  social  e  eclesial,  ou seja,  no  mundo  da  vida  da  Igreja.  O  texto  faz  uma  releitura  do  conceito,  ampliando-o e trazendo-o para o campo das Ciências Sociais, por meio da proposta teórica de Jürgen Habermas na Teoria da Ação Comunicativa. Para isso, verificaremos tal processo  de  recepção  nas  Igrejas  locais  do  Estado  do  Maranhão.

sintetiza los frutos de una larga investigación sobre la continuidad o discontinuidad de la postura oficial de la Iglesia católica en materia de libertad religiosa. Aborda la cuestión desde un diálogo entre el Derecho y la Teología. Para ello da tres pasos. Primero estudia cómo la declaración conciliar distingue entre derecho y moral y consigue desvincular del indiferentismo el derecho de libertad religiosa. En segundo lugar, interpreta desde lo adquirido  los pronunciamientos anteriores de la autoridad eclesiástica. Por último, ofrece cuatro paradigmas hermenéuticos que ayudarán a dilucidar la cuestión de la continuidad. Conclueo que ha habido una seria rectificación, pero la intención fundamental de ambos magisterios coincide.

Liberation Theology, as a contemporary theology that emerged in the 20th century, is still in the current debate regarding the epistemology and methodology of theology. Its influence continues to have great relevance worldwide, for example, through the Theology of the People, which we analyze here in its main concepts. We make a formal approach to its method based on its epistemological foundations, in order to account for its theory arising from Christian praxis. In the description of its most important aspects, we highlight the role of its relations with philosophy and science. To do so, we focus on the contributions offered by the Brazilian author Agenor Brighenti and the Argentine thinker Juan Carlos Scannone. Finally, we investigate the role played by praxis as a horizon from which theological reflection arises.
