Service history

The history of Saint-Avold's archives is closely linked to the city's prestigious past. Empowered by a succession of charters as early as the 14th century, the town council recognized the importance of these legal instruments in defending the interests of the bourgeoisie. It entrusted their management to an alderman.

  • 1896: January 26, transfer of archives from Saint-Avold station under the aegis of Mayor Robert Hein.
  • 1965: On February 5, municipal services were moved into the present-day Town Hall.

  • 1985: an archivist is hired on October 1.
  • 1986: On October 16, the old archives deposited in Metz were returned to Saint-Avold in the new premises of the Hôtel de Ville.
  • 2011: transfer of the archives to the Jeanne d'Arc district in June, on the site of the former HBL stores, refurbished for the occasion.

The library

The archives department provides researchers with a 4000-volume library specializing in studies of Lorraine, Moselle, Saarland, Luxembourg and Alsace. It is of interest not only to historians, but also to Germanists and jurists. It includes

  • a historical library
  • dictionaries and reference works
  • books, brochures and periodicals on Saint-Avold and the surrounding area
  • an administrative library
  • a large number of magazines and periodicals, including the Sankt-Avolder Anzeiger (microfilmed) from 1899 to 1914 and a collection of Le Républicain Lorrain from 1977 to 2023.

Parish registers

Here you can consult the parish and civil registers of Saint-Avold from 1645 to 1900, and those of the former village of Dourd'hal from 1770 to 1900.
The condition of these registers, which are very tired, has forced us to produce a microfiche version, covering the period from 1645 to 1900 for Saint-Avold. It is preferable to reserve the microfiche reader for consultation.
For the period after 1900, please consult the Registry Office.

Historical and administrative archives

  • Readers will find around twenty directories of previously classified archives, including the oldest documents dating back to the 14th century.
  • The department also boasts a remarkable collection of photographs and postcards.
