The show tackles a lot of themes, like classism, talent vs. hard work and preservation/tradition vs. change/survival. There are also plenty of strong homosexual undertones, shonen ai being the author's home turf.
Above all though, it's a brilliant drama about a Yakuza wanting to learn Rakugo and in the process helping to heal his master's broken family. It never becomes oppressively dark and the story is finished in the second season. Absolutely watch it if you're in the mood for a slow, well-written, character-driven period drama.
