I started putting my thoughts together on why I don't use AI. :NoAI: It will take time to write it all out, it feels like an essay. I could probably come up with a hundred reasons, but I am currently at eight just off the top of my head.

I want to share one that no one talks about.

Big tech companies are using cheap labor in the global south to filter the human trauma on the internet in order to train LLM models. People in countries like Kenya, India, and the Philippines spend 9+ hours per day viewing the most horrific content imaginable (violence, abuse, hate speech, etc) at $1.50/hr. They are literally using the minds of people in precarious economic situations as a filter to protect the sensibilities of the wealthy. They claim it is opportunity when it is actually predatory.

The next time you ask an "ai" to summarize a 450 word article for you, think about the human filter required to make that answer safe. You are not just saving time, you are benefiting from a predatory labor practice that pays pennies to protect your sensibilities.

THIS IS IMPORTANT: DO NOT TRUST GOOGLE GEMINI, and it may already be enabled in your GMAIL BY DEFAULT.

    DO NOT TRUST GOOGLE!

says it may share your interactions with with law enforcement, including involving Gemini features in . Given Google's CEO Sundar's enthusiastic embrace of the Fascist Trump administration and teaming Gemini with Hegseth's Department of Defense, I NO LONGER TRUST GOOGLE.

Pay attention to this. Google -- as always -- says they do not give user data to law enforcement except with a valid warrant. This has long been true, but I no longer trust Google to honor this position. A quick call from Trump to Sundar could well be enough to bypass those past protections. Discussing an anti-Trump demonstration? Abortion? Helping local immigrants? You can no longer trust Google to not treat your data as fodder for fascist Trump, irrespective of Google's public statements.

VERY IMPORTANT: It appears that if you have "Smart Features" enabled in Gmail -- which has long included a variety of features, you now probably (or soon will) also have Gemini scouring through your email. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND turning this off. Can we be sure Google will really honor this choice given their embrace of Trump? No, but it's important to have specified your choice on the record.

To turn off Gmail smart features (apparently including Gemini, though other ways to ostensibly turn off Gemini in Gmail may also be available):

    Enter Gmail

Click the Gear icon at the upper right

    Click "See all settings"

    Stay on the "General" tab

Scroll down to "Smart features" -- make sure it is unchecked

Just below this (currently) is "Google Workspace smart features"

Click the "Manage Workspace smart feature settings" bubble

Make sure the toggles are OFF (to the left) for everything listed in the pop-up
that appears. Be SURE TO SCROLL DOWN -- there are currently TWO toggles
but the second may be completely hidden if you don't grab the little scrollbar on the right and pull it down. Again, make sure BOTH toggles are off.

    Click Save

Now back on the General Tab, scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click Save Changes if that button is not already greyed out and unclickable.

That's what I have for you for now, based on the information I have right now.
    More as I learn more.

It's a terrible situation that pains me greatly. Before you ask, I do not at this time have a recommendation for other major email providers.

How you proceed is up to you, of course.

    Take care.

    L

A popular TikTok channel featuring an "Aboriginal man" presenting animal facts has been exposed as an AI forgery.

AI is Iggy Azalea on an industrial scale:

"The self-described “Bush Legend” on TikTok, Facebook and Instagram is growing in popularity.

"These short and sharp videos feature an Aboriginal man – sometimes painted up in ochre, other times in an all khaki outfit – as he introduces different native animals and facts about them.
      ...
"But the Bush Legend isn’t real. He is generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

"This is a part of a growing influx of AI being utilised to represent Indigenous peoples, knowledges and cultures with no community accountability or relationships with Indigenous peoples. It forms a new type of cultural appropriation, one that Indigenous peoples are increasingly concerned about."
      ...
"We are seeing the rise of an AI Blakface that is utilised with ease thanks to the availability and prevalence of AI.

"Non-Indigenous people and entities are able to create Indigenous personas through AI, often grounded in stereotypical representations that both amalgamate and appropriate cultures."

Google's "personal intelligence" is a privacy nightmare. Just because it doesn't allegedly use your photos, email, drive data, etc. for training AI does not make it OK.

Apple admits it lost the AI war and embarrassingly hands Siri’s future to Google

Apple has confirmed that future Apple Intelligence models will rely on Google Gemini, marking the most surprising strategic pivot in years. After falling behind rivals in AI and failing to evolve Siri, Apple has partnered with the very company it spent a decade competing against. The announcement reads like a quiet admission that Apple lost the AI race it helped start.

I'm not sure if it actually has, but if AI has become consistently more reliable than search engine results, then I wonder when the turning point was.

My guess is the release of Gemini 2.5 Pro, or possibly GPT-o1. These were two of the earliest reasoning models.

A screenshot of the Gemini mobile app. The user asks: 'What is the most common sexual orientation in Gen z? Is it bisexual?' Gemini responds correctly: 'No... heterosexuality (straight).' The 'Double-check response' feature at the bottom displays a warning: 'Google Search found content that differs,' citing an Ipsos headline 'Gen Zers most likely to identify as LGBT+.' The search result misinterprets 'most likely compared to other generations' as a 'statistical majority,' causing the tool to incorrectly flag Gemini's factual answer as an error.

That is why I am giving @MetaGer a try. It ticks off most of the boxes of my search engine wish list. They respects your privacy by not spying on you, no ads, open source, nonprofit with a community led open governance model, custom filtering & prioritization, and most importantly they doesn't push a LLM onto you.

While I cannot find any mention of their stance on LLMs (please let me know if you have a source). Their social media posts seem to suggest they are not fans of it. The fact that they try to filter out slop and do not offer "ai" features is such a relief.

Since they do not have ads they rely on a donation of about €0.01 per search. I think that is reasonable. I am willing to pay for a good service that does not make me the product.

Cool, the Lagrange client for the Gemini Protocol is also available on Apple iOS via a TestFlight beta version.

Amazing, now I can read the Smallweb also on my phone 😁

One quick way to lose my respect is to say "we don't know whether AI is gaining consciousness"

                                                    WITH A STRAIGHT FACE.

If this is difficult for you (or someone you know) to understand, please read the book AI Snake Oil by Arvind Narayanan and Sayash Kapoor.

Ever heard of Gemini? It's a lightweight internet protocol between Gopher and the Web - no JavaScript, no cookies, no tracking, just text and links over TLS.

Think of it as the web before it got complicated. Pages are written in "gemtext", a minimal markup format. The entire protocol spec fits on a few pages.

To explore Geminispace you need a client:
                                                      - Lagrange (GUI, cross-platform): gmi.skyjake.fi/lagrange/
                                                      - Amfora (terminal): github.com/makeworld-the-web-g

Start exploring at gemini://warmedal.se/~antenna/ - an aggregator of active capsules (what we call Gemini sites).

                                                            - nullfs mounts for zero-copy file sharing between jails

The "transporter pattern" keeps the blog jail unexposed while enabling automated deploys. Jails remain the most elegant isolation mechanism around.

If you use Gmail, you need to be aware of an important change that’s quietly rolling out. Reportedly, Google has recently started automatically opting users in to allow Gmail to access all private messages and attachments for training its AI models. This means your emails could be analyzed to improve Google’s AI assistants, like Smart Compose or AI-generated replies. Unless you decide to take action.

The reason behind this is Google’s push to power new Gmail features with its Gemini AI, helping you write emails faster and manage your inbox more efficiently. To do that, Google is using real email content, including attachments, to train and refine its AI models. Some users are now reporting that these settings are switched on by default instead of asking for explicit opt-in.

Which means that if you don’t manually turn these setting off, your private messages may be used for AI training behind the scenes. Even though Google promises strong privacy measures like anonymization and data security during AI training, for anyone handling sensitive or confidential information, that may not feel reassuring."

But in October, the Alphabet Inc. unit “secretly” turned on Gemini for all those applications, enabling it to collect private data “without the users’ knowledge or consent,” according to the complaint filed late Tuesday in federal court in San Jose, California.

While the company allows users to turn off Gemini, they need to dig into Google’s privacy settings to deactivate the AI tool, according to the proposed class-action suit. Unless they take that step, Google uses Gemini to “access and exploit the entire recorded history of its users’ private communications, including literally every email and attachment sent and received in their Gmail accounts,” according to the complaint."

Its monopoly behavior is frequent, obvious, and damaging.

Choose Settings -> Manage Apps, and make sure "Use by default" is checked OFF for everything you don't like, especially Gemini (Google's AI that they're pushing on everyone). This was added and turned on by default for most people, it seems. It also looks like Google is training their AI on every document you open; people report very slow load times when this setting is on, remedied by turning it off.

In fact I think "security" is really about control, and nowadays when I encounter a security challenge I think of it in terms of who is trying to control my behavior and to what ends. I think it's clear by now that many internet "security" controls, at least those deployed by large tech companies, are not good faith efforts to protect users; that's a secondary concern.
