Tonight, I'm taking a small break from opera to listen to something that has become a wonderful tradition. I love waltzes and Viennese composers, and I've been looking forward to this for awhile. 2025. It was a good year for The Confused Greenies of Players' Patchwork Theatre Company. Though we did not stage as many performances or travel to as many places as the prior year, what we did was majestic including our first commedia dell'arte pastorale historic fantasy style plays and our first fully staged reading, a sudden and unexpected giant whale, and then wrapping up with writing dozens of new three-act scenarios for future productions!
This year was tough in many ways and stressful. But it's always been our goal to make the world better one laugh, one smile at at a time!

I used to watch the SyFy Twilight Zone marathon on NYE and NYD. I don't have cable so I tend to watch it some other way (I have the whole series on my Plex, or as someone [Ash? Jonathan?] noted it's always playing on PlutoTV). I'm watching the latter today and "He's Alive" is on.
"He's Alive" is an unflinching look at the idea 'It can happen here'. Dennis Hopper brilliantly plays a proto-Nazi growing his influence in the USA, with a dark figure at his back. An older man, Ernst, who knew him as a child, gives a stirring speech (around the 35 minute mark) as Stephen Mille-- I mean Peter Vollmer is holding a rally. He reminds the crowd what this rhetoric really is: Racism, Fascism, Genocide. Hate. And that we've seen it all before and yes, it can happen here.
Anyway, it's a great episode and you should watch it (S4E4) if you have not. Or watch it again given the state of America right now. Most clips concentrate on the dark figure, but the old man's speech is, to me, the best part. That's Serling speaking through this character. (*cough* https://tinyurl.com/yc38jxat )
But all this is leading to what I wanted to share. Rod Serling, creator and one of the primary writers on the show, was a staunch advocate for racial equality and for calling out the failings of society to eradicate systemic racism [then] 100 years after Lincoln.
In 1964 Serling wrote this speech for Dick Van Dyke to deliver alongside MLK Jr. (whom Serling later eulogized saying "In his grave, we praise him for his decency - but when he walked amongst us, we responded with no decency of our own... Well, here we are — the last day of 2025. What can I say about the year except: wow, let’s not do that again. Not really, though. Plenty of good things happened, and most of the good was personal, which is its own kind of blessing. So for me, the year wasn’t bad at all, as long as I avoided looking at the news. Here’s to a happy 2026 🍷.
I got out of bed in time for my morning nap, but skipped it in favor of coming in here and writing to you. No worries — that nap will find me eventually.
It just occurred to me that 21st‑century folks really missed out on dial‑up internet. Oh, they were alive, but not yet part of the online world; they were still reaching for the grab toys in their cribs. They never truly experienced the “krrr–krrr–WHEEEEeee–chk–chk–SKREEE–shhhhh…” of a modem handshake. Those were the days — exciting, but slow. You remember waiting for an image to download, watching it materialize pixel by pixel on a cathode‑ray‑tube monitor. It felt like magic.
And with those early telephone modems, as you recall, we had to choose between using the internet or using the telephone — unless you were fancy enough to have two phone lines, which most of us weren’t. Cell phones existed, but they weren’t quite a thing yet. That would come soon enough.
Today we carry the internet in our back pockets, and sometimes even on our wrists like a super Dick Tracy watch. It’s worth noting that many 21st‑century folks turned 25 this year. When I was 25, the internet and handheld computers were still the stuff of science‑fiction dreams.

It's been a hell of a year... In February, shortly after a certain US executive order was signed, I started getting phone calls from an old pediatrician's office, requesting we schedule a much needed check up for *one* of my three children - nevermind that we hadn't been there in over five years, due to moving a couple hundred miles away. They called daily for a week - always about that one child, never the other two - before I blocked their number. We will never know for sure, but our assumption was that there was *something* in her medical record that made them particularly interested in her...
Long story short, we're in Germany now. It hasn't been easy, it hasn't always been great, but my daughter is relatively safe, my other kids are safe, we're all okay. Here's hoping for a grand #NewYear in Germany.

Sometime around the 2020 era, we lost the right to be mediocre at things we love.
No longer can you just bake bread...you must start a sourdough side hustle lol. Wanna stay fit and go jogging or running? Nah, you gotta optimize your biometrics for a marathon. What my point is that every hobby has been enshittified and gentrified into a brand opportunity.
This strange infatuation with optimization culture is killing the human spirit.
So this new year, starting tomorrow, one of my resolutions is to do something bad but fun. Maybe I write a terrible poem. I like to draw and paint, so perhaps I will draw a horse that looks like a table or sing off-key in the showers or in front of my loved ones. The algorithm driving the mainstream social media wants me to be a polished product, but my humanity lives in these messy, unoptimized, cringe-inducing joyful failures.
I will try to reclaim the right to be an amateur. Will you join me?
