Bishop Schneider visits Slovenia

His Excellency, Bishop Athanasius Schneider, accepted an invitation from Juventutem Slovenia and offered the first pontifical High Mass in that country since the 1960s.

Juventutem Slovenia recently translated Bishop Schneider's book on receiving communion on the tongue, Corpus Christi. According to the blog Ad Dominum, the bishop delivered a lecture on that subject on 18 November, and celebrated pontifical Low and High Masses there last month. Some of the faithful traveled from as far as Croatia and Italy for the lecture and Masses, which were well-attended.  His Excellency was escorted by members of Juventutem Slovenia to the National Shrine of the Virgin Mary at Brezje, followed by a visit to the city of Bled and the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Ljubjana.

Additional photos of the bishop's visit can be found on Ad Dominum.

In just a few hours, remember, a Pontifical High Mass with Cardinal Pell at Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini. (UPDATE: According to Messa in Latino, Cardinal Pell was unable to celebrate the Pontifical Mass due to sudden illness; a Solemn Mass was instead celebrated by his personal secretary. A homily written by Cardinal Pell and a message from Benedict XVI, who told the pilgrims that "I am with you in spirit", were read out at the Mass.)

Event: Juventutem Long Island tonight (Assumption)

Event - Rome, October 2014, Two Pontifical Masses in two days:
Cardinal Pell, Prefect of the Secretariat for Economy to celebrate Pontifical Mass as part of Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage

The International Juventutem Federation is pleased to announce that His Eminence George Cardinal Pell, Prefect of the Secretariat for Economy, has kindly accepted our invitation to be the Celebrant at a Pontifical Solemn High Mass according to the Missal of St John XXIII on Friday 24 October 2014, 6:30pm, at Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini, Parish Church of the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter in Rome, Italy. The Holy Sacrifice will be offered in thanksgiving for the tenth anniversary of Juventutem, the worldwide youth movement fostering the sanctification of the young through the Roman traditions of Holy Mother Church. We are grateful to His Eminence who generously presided at Solemn Pontifical Vespers organised by Juventutem during World Youth Days in the past, first in Düsseldorf on 17 August 2005, and again in Sydney on 16 July 2008.

After Vespers in Düsseldorf, Cardinal Pell gave the following encouragements to the young WYD pilgrims of Juventutem: "I am happy to be here because the old Latin rite is one of the most beautiful things in the entire Western civilization. And I am very glad that this ancient rite has its place in the Church today. I am happy because this rite helps you to love God and to love one another. In this ancient rite we always see that our prayer is an act of worship. It is impossible to see a celebration like these Vespers as something horizontal. We have one Church only, whose Head is the Successor of Peter, with the Bishops as successors of the Apostles, and this unity is very important for the life of the Church” (translated from the original French).

Members and supporters of Juventutem are cordially invited to make arrangements to be in Rome and attend the Mass, which will be preceded by other Juventutem activities (full schedule to be advertised soon). All pilgrims in Rome are naturally invited as well, regardless of their involvement with Juventutem. The event will be part of the Populus Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage 2014. The following day, on Saturday 25 October, His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, will celebrate a Solemn Pontifical High Mass according to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in Saint Peter’s Basilica, at 12:00 noon.

Pope's Latin Twitter account translator celebrates Low TLM in Michigan

The Detroit Free Press reported earlier this week:

Some 230,000 people follow Spanish-speaking Pope Francis’ Twitter feed in Latin, a language that draws more users than German, Polish or Arabic. And one of the Vatican-based authors who translates Francis’ 140-character pronouncements into Latin is Msgr. Daniel Gallagher, a Catholic priest who graduated from then-Traverse City High School and the University of Michigan.

Gallagher, on loan to the Vatican from the Diocese of Gaylord, is the only American among seven specialists in the Office of Latin Letters at the Vatican Secretary of State. Gallagher and his colleagues help the pope conduct business in Latin, the official language of the Roman Catholic Church.

“The opportunity to compose in Latin as a job and day after day is very unique,” said Gallagher. “Most people who are involved in Latin at higher levels are there because they’re studying it. That’s a different ballgame than writing Latin, which is very unique. We’re the only place in the world ... that it’s an official requirement.”

Gallagher, 44, returns to Michigan today to be a featured speaker at a University of Michigan gathering Friday and Saturday of Latin enthusiasts — from high school Latin teachers to armchair Latinists who are coming from across the country for classical discourse. Gallagher majored in microbiology at U-M while pondering a medical career and didn’t intensively study Latin until he studied for the priesthood.

Gallagher will talk about his work, which involves feeding posts at least four times a week to Francis’ Twitter page and translating papal decrees, announcements and letters of commendation into the language of ancient Rome. There’s usually a Latin tweet every Sunday and Wednesday following the pope’s public addresses.

The popularity of the pope’s Latin Twitter account shows that Latin is far from dead, said Gallagher.

Msgr. Gallagher celebrated a Low Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite yesterday at St. Thomas, Ann Arbor, MI, as recorded above (image by Juventutem Michigan). Congratulations to him and to all involved!

Photos: Solemn High Mass following the March for Life

On 22 January 2014, the annual March for Life was held in Washington, D.C.  Several traditional Latin Masses were offered before and after the March, including Low Masses in the morning at Saint Mary, Mother of God church in the District by priests such as Canon Michael Stein of the Institute of Christ the King and Father Kevin Cusick.  (Sadly absent this year were the Franciscans of the Immaculate, who have visited Saint Mary's before the March for Life over the past few years to offer Low Masses.)

In the evening, a Solemn High Mass was offered for the repose of the soul of Miss Nellie Gray, foundress of the March for Life.  The celebrant was Dom Philip Anderson, O.S.B., abbot of Our Lady of Clear Creek Abbey; the deacon was Monsignor Andrew Wadsworth, oratory moderator of the newly-founded Community of Saint Philip Neri in D.C.; and the subdeacon was Father Gregory Pendergraft, F.S.S.P., development director for the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter in the U.S.

A surprise (and very welcome) guest at the Mass, which became a Solemn High Mass in the Presence of a Greater Prelate, was His Excellency Thomas Paprocki, bishop of Springfield, Illinois.

Several priests and religious assisted in choro (with others in the pews due to space), and MCs and acolytes included servers from the parish as well as other young men from the region.  The pastor of the church, Father Alfred Harris, attended and graciously hosted the standing-room-only congregation (the church holds about 400), almost all of whom spent the day outside in freezing temperatures.

The music was sung by the schola cantorum of the Lyceum School, an Ohio-based Catholic classical education program serving grades seven through twelve.  The choir sang Palestrina's Missa Brevis for the ordinary, Gregorian chant propers and several Renaissance polyphonic motets. The chant and sacred polyphony were well-rehearsed, demonstrated through tasteful, magnificent singing and exemplary direction.

Pontifical High Mass for the Dead at the Faldstool

The Most Reverend Joseph Nathaniel Perry, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago, offered a Pontifical High Mass for the Dead at the Faldstool for the souls of deceased Catholic leaders of the pro-life movement on Friday, 25 January, after the March for Life in Washington, D.C.

The Mass was organized by Juventutem Michigan, under the leadership of Mr. Paul Schultz, Esq. Offered at Saint Mary, Mother of God church, the Mass attracted approximately 450 people (including several dozen who had to stand in the narthex and back of the nave), mostly Catholics in their 20s and 30s who were visiting Washington for the March.  Several priests from the Fraternity of Saint Peter, Institute of Christ the King and various dioceses served as ministers and sat in choro.  The parish schola of men, under the direction of guest conductor Wassim Sarweh, chanted the propers and ordinary of the Requiem Mass.  A choir of six men sang several polyphonic motets.

The following are some photos taken by Juventutem volunteers:

March for Life in Washington, D.C.

This Friday, 25 January, the March for Life will be held in Washington, D.C., marking the 40th anniversary of the Roe versus Wade decision on abortion in the United States.  An enormous amount of traditional Catholics attend the March -- and I am guessing nearly everyone reading this within driving distance to our nation's capital will be there Friday to walk peacefully down Constitution Avenue to the U.S. Supreme Court.  Some people even fly in from other parts of the country or world.  It is a huge annual event, particularly this year with the unfortunate milestone.

The speeches by pro-life leaders will be at 12 noon, and the March itself will be around 1-3 p.m.  Before and after those times (hauntingly, noon to three on a Friday, after 40 years) there will be numerous traditional Latin Masses offered near the site of the March.

The parish that offers the only public traditional Latin Mass in Washington, D.C., will be the site of all the Masses: Saint Mary, Mother of God, church at 5th and H streets, Northwest.  The closest Metro station is Gallery Place / Chinatown, using the 7th and H street exit and walking two blocks to Old Saint Mary's. The church and traditional Latin Mass there have a special connection to the March for Life, as it was the long-time parish of Miss Nellie J. Gray, who started the March for Life and ran it every year until passing away in August.  This photo was taken during her funeral, a traditional Latin Requiem Missa Cantata offered by Father Alfred J. Harris, pastor, with Cardinals O'Malley and Wuerl in choro:

Here is a list of traditional Latin Masses scheduled to be offered there on Friday, 25 January, before and after the March for Life:

Event: A Talk on "The Culture of the Traditional Liturgy"

From our friend, and NLM blogger, Mr. Gregory Di Pippo:

There will be a Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in the lower church of the Cathedral starting at 7:30 p.m. of September 7, and my talk on "The Culture of the Traditional Liturgy" will follow immediately thereafter, with time for questions afterwards. The talk will focus on the Traditional Liturgy as a culture, and as an expression of culture, and what needs to be done to recover the fullness of the Catholic tradition.

The address of Boston's Cathedral of the Holy Cross is 75 Union Park Street; the entrance to the lower church is on the left side as you face the building from the front. This event is entirely open to the public and is sponsored by the newly-founded Juventutem Boston.
