What Is BMI?

BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared. The document provides an example calculation showing a person who is 5'2" tall and weighs 55kg has a BMI of 22.31, indicating a normal weight. While BMI can help determine if a person is underweight, normal weight, or obese, it has limitations as it does not account for factors like age, sex, muscle mass, or fat distribution. Alternative measures like skin fold thickness, waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio may provide more accurate body composition assessments than BMI alone. BMI is still a useful public health tool for monitoring population weight

1. What is BMI?

Full form of BMI is body mass index. The BMI is defined as the body mass divided by the square
of the body height and expressed in kg/m2.

2. Calculation of BMI
Height =5 2=(5x12)+2=62x2.54=157.48 cm=157.48/100=1.57 m
Weight=55 kg
BMI=weight/(height in m)2
=55/(1.57)2=22.31 kg/m2
Since BMI value is within 18.5 to 24.9 the person has normal weight.

3. Application of BMI
Through BMI process we get to know whether the person is overweight, normal weight or obese.

4. Limitation of BMI.
The limitation of BMI are given below:
I. BMI fails to take age and sex into account. Women naturally tend to have more body fat
than men of equal BMI, while older people tend to have more body fat than younger people
with the same BMI.
II. Through BMI process there is no way of measuring where body fat is located in the body.

5. Alternatives of BMI
The main alternatives of BMI are given below:
I. Skin fold thickness
II. Waist circumference measurement
III. Waist to hip ratio
IV. Broca’s index

6. Application of BMI in public health

BMI calculation is very helpful for population overweight and obesity. It requires only height and
weight which is also easy to collect from the public.
