1. What is blood? What is the functions of blood?
Blood is a fluid connective tissue. The functions of blood is given below:
I. Blood carries oxygen ,nutrients essential elements to the cell
II. It takes away all waste elements from the body through swat anus lung etc.
2. What is ABO system?
The ABO blood group system is used to denote of one. both ,or neither of the A and B antigens or
erythrocytes. The grouping is based on the presence of antigens on the RBC wall. There are 4 types
of antigen –A,B,AB and O
3. What is RH system?
The RH blood group system consists of C,D,E antigens and the RH blood grouping system is
named after Rhesus monkey.
4. How to test blood group?
The procedure to test blood group is given below:
I. First mix the patient's blood with three different reagents (blue, yellow and colorless)
including either of the three different antibodies, A, B .D. Blue is for antigen A, yellow
is for antigen B or colorless is for D antigen.
II. We look for agglutination. The agglutination indicates that the blood has reacted with
a certain antibody and is therefore not compatible with blood containing that kind of
antibody. If the blood does not agglutinate, it indicates that the blood does not have the
antigens binding the special antibody in the reagent.
III. If there is agglutination due to presence of blue reagent it means it has A antigen.
Similarly if it has agglutination due to reagent yellow and colorless it means it has B
and D antigen respectively.
IV. If there is agglutination due to colorless reagent it means it has Rh positive and if there
is no agglutination due to white reagent it means it is Rh negative.
5. Importance of knowing blood group
The importance of knowing blood type are given below:
I. Medical Emergencies – Doctors need to know what blood type of blood we have in order
to prevent the risk of giving an incompatible blood type during surgery or for another
medical need.
II. Pregnancy – In pregnant women, it is important to know whether their blood is positive or
negative.
III. Donating – There is a constant need for blood donations. Sometimes certain blood types
will be called out to the public to donate if possible due to an emergency or low supply.
6. What is antigen and antibody?
Antigen: An antigen is any substance to which the immune system can respond.
Antibody: An immunoglobulin, a specialized immune protein, produced because of the
introduction of an antigen into the body, and which possesses the remarkable ability to combine
with the very antigen that triggered its production.
7. Application of blood grouping technique in public health.
Blood grouping is very important in public health. If there is any earthquake or accident then
doctors will be able to match blood group with the person who needs blood immediately.
