Models of Atom

John Dalton proposed the billiard ball model of the atom, where atoms were like tiny balls. Ernest Rutherford later proposed the planetary model of the atom, where a tiny, dense, positively charged nucleus is at the center and electrons orbit around it like planets around the sun. Dalton and Rutherford's models helped develop early understandings of atomic structure before the concepts of the nucleus and electrons were known.

MODELS OF ATOM

I.PROPOSAL

John Dalton

Ernest Rutherford

INTRODUCTION

Dalton's Model of an Atom. Based on all his observations, Dalton proposed

his model of an atom. It is often referred to as the billiard ball model. He defined

an atom to be a ball-like structure, as the concepts of atomic nucleus and electrons

were unknown at the time.

Rutherford atomic model, also called nuclear atom or planetary model of the

atom, description of the structure of atoms proposed (1911) by the New Zealand-

born physicist Ernest Rutherford. The model described the atom as a tiny, dense,
positively charged core called a nucleus, in which nearly all the mass is

concentrated, around which the light, negative constituents, called electrons,

circulate at some distance, much like planets revolving around the Sun.
