Answer Key - Science 8 Module 3: What I Know Lesson 1

1. The document is an answer key and activities for a science module on the three states of matter - solid, liquid, and gas. 2. It provides answers to multiple choice questions about condensation, evaporation, melting, and freezing. 3. The activities ask students to describe processes like water changing from liquid to gas when heat is added and back to liquid when heat is removed.

What I Know

LESSON 1 What’s more

ACTIVITY 3

1. Among the three states of matter, gas has the most scattered molecules. It is
followed by liquid while solid appeared to have the most compacted molecular
arrangement.
2. Condensation is a process where gas turns into liquid while evaporation does
the opposite manner.
3. No, melting is a process that involves convertion of solid state into liquid
while freezing is its complete opposite.

(Answer may vary)

ACTIVITY 4

1. It boils/evaporates and turned into a gaseous state.

2. It solidifies.
3. The change in temperature enable the liquid either absorbed or released heat
from its system. If heat is removed, the molecules loses kinetic energy and
moves slowly. But if the heat is absorbed it will do the opposite. Either of the
two processes happen, the liquid will change its state.

What’s New
1. The three pictures
show a condensation
process.

2. Both pictures show an

evaporation process.

3. Yes, both sets of

pictures involve water
that changes its state.
However it went on the
opposite ways. Water
vapor turned into liquid

Additional Activities
1. When water absorbes heat, its molecules gain kinetic energy therefore exciting its particles and move
farther apart. When heating continues, water becomes water vapor.
2. When heat is removed from water, its molecule loses kinetic energy, therfore making its particles to move
slowly. When the cooling continues, water will now turn into ice.
3. When you subject a sugar crystals into heat, its molecules gain kinetic energy therefore making its particle
to move very fast. When you heat it continuously, it will turn into syrup.
