RT 98 - INDEPENDENT STUDY
Objectives: This Special Studies course is designed to give the advanced radiologic technology
student the opportunity to study and be tested on materials in Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This
self-paced course is also designed to assist the registered radiologic technologist in obtaining
continuing education in all areas of knowledge as related to radiologic sciences
The following multimedia programs are required of those students who choose to take the
Magnetic Resonance Imaging component:
C 123 Radiographic Contrast
C 128 Radiographic Density
C118 Fundamentals of MRI will familiarize students with basic physics and
safety measures of this modality.
CD 27 Sectional Anatomy for Radiographers
V132 Magnetic Resonance: An overview
V418 MRI Magnet Safety: Warning! Invisible Force.

Learning Objectives
1. Explain the significance of Hydrogen in MRI.
2. Describe the process of the MRI image formation.
3. Compare MRI to CT with respect to:
Contrast, detail and spatial characteristics
4. List at least 3 exams in which MRI is preferred over CT.
5. Describe the role of the following parameters in the formation of the MR image:
T.R.
T.E.
N.E.X.
Matrix
Flip angle
6. Identify the cross sectional anatomy for the following exams:
Brain, Cervical Spine, Lumbar Spine and Knee
7. List the T.R., T.E., Matrix, N.E.X., Slice Thickness and spacing for the following exams.
Brain, Cervical Spine, Lumbar Spine and Knee
8. List the benefits of Diffusion Weighted Imaging.
9. Describe the process of Dynamic imaging.
10. Describe the difference between ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
11. List the contraindications for an MRI exam.
12. List at least 8 screening questions asked of patients before they can enter the scan room.
13. Describe Gauss lines and their significance.
14. List at least 4 methods to reduce patient anxiety during an MRI exam.
15. Identify internal devices which are considered MRI safe.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE COURSE
1. Complete and sign the form on page 12. Submit this complete form to the course
instructor.
2. For each credit unit, you are to complete five titles of the available material. These
specific titles must be spelled out on the Special Studies form.
3. Email the course instructor to request an add code. Use this add code to enroll in the
class.
4. At your own pace, schedule time to work on this class’ material in the Health Learning
Resource Center, Room 4039. If you plan to study this material online, you must
sign in and out the CATE webpage of this class. Failure to do so, your study hours
will not be counted.
5. You must have your student ID in order to view material in the Health Learning
Resource Center. Report to the Doyle Student Center to obtain an ID. Attached are two
roll sheets which MUST be turned in to the program director at final period.
6. Your grade will be based on the following:
- Attendance 48 hrs (for each credit unit) 40%
- A term paper (for each credit unit) 30 %
- Final examination 30%
This term paper should summarize the subjects, their efficacy, and
the learning experience you have acquired through this course.
This final paper will be graded based on grammar, organization,
and expository skills.
The instructor will give details abou the final examination, that
must be taken during the Finals week.
7. Make sure to schedule with me if you need clarifications or assistance. If you do not feel
that you can make a commitment to this class - DO NOT register. If you DO follow thru,
I feel very confident that you will benefit a great deal from this experience. Any problem,

I will study/review the following modules: C118 Fundamentals of MRI, CD 27 Sectional
Anatomy for Radiographers, V132 Magnetic Resonance: An overview, V418 MRI Magnet
Safety: Warning! Invisible Force.
At completion of this course, by the last day of the finals week, I will submit a 2-page final paper
and a timesheet for grading. I will also take a final as indicated by the instructor. This paper will
summarize what I would have learned and its relevance to the field of Magnetic Resonance
Imaging.
