Ee521 Assignment 1 2021

This document contains 4 questions regarding power systems for an assignment. Question 1 involves calculating fault currents, voltages, and line currents for a power system network with a fault on one of the buses. Question 2 involves calculating fault currents for a system with a generator connected through a transformer to motors. Question 3 involves calculating symmetrical components for a star-connected balanced load. POWER SYSTEMS 2 – EE521

ASSIGNMENT ONE

DATE DUE: 18th March, 2021.

QUESTION ONE
The power system network shown in Figure 1 has the following equipment ratings:

Figure 1 Single line diagram for Question 1

By assuming a system power base of 500 MVA and a voltage base of 400 kV for the
transmission lines, convert all the system parameters into per unit values and draw the single line
diagram for the network. A dead three-phase fault occurs on bus 1 of the network. Compute (i)
the subtransient fault current in kA, (ii) the bus voltages, and (iii) currents in lines 1-4, 2-4, and
3-4. Neglect pre-fault load current and assume a pre-fault voltage of 404 kV.

QUESTION TWO
A 25 MVA, 13.8 kV generator in which 𝑋𝑑,, = 15% is connected through a transformer to a bus
that supplies four identical motors, as shown in Figure 2.
The 𝑋𝑑,, reactance of each motor is 20% on a base of 5 MVA, 6.9 kV. The transformer is rated at
25 MVA, 13.6 kV/6.9 kV with 𝑋1 = 10%. The bus voltages at the motors is 6.9 kV when a fault
occurs at point P. For the fault specified, find
1. Subtransient current 𝐼𝑓,, in the fault
2. The transient current in breaker A
3. The symmetrical SC interrupting current in the fault and in breaker A.

QUESTION THREE

A star-connected, balanced load of 10Ω each has the following voltages across its terminals;
𝑉𝑎𝑏 = 200𝑉, 𝑉𝑏𝑐 = 220𝑉, and 𝑉𝑐𝑎 = 180𝑉. Calculate the symmetrical components of line and
phase voltages. From the symmetrical components of line voltages, determine the line currents.

[Note: Assume 𝑉𝑐𝑎 = 𝑉𝑐𝑎 ∠120°, use the cosine law for the triangle to calculate the phase angles
of the other line voltages]

QUESTION FOUR

The zero sequence reactances for the various components of the power system shown in Figure 3
are as follows:

Calculate the zero-sequence impedances and draw the zero-sequence equivalent circuit for
Figure 3. Use 100 MVA as MVA base. The base voltage for each section of the system is the
rated voltage.
