CHAPTER I
Background of the study
INTRODUCTION
The widespread adaptation of social media platforms has
revolutionized how teenagers interact, communicate and consume
content. Among these platforms, tiktok has gained immense
popularity among teenagers offering a diverse range of short-form
videos. However, concerns have emerged regarding the excessive
usage of tiktok among teenagers, which may have detrimental effects
on their well-being and daily functioning.
Excessive tiktok usage can lead to several problems. Firstly, it
can contribute to diminished productivity as teenagers may spend
significant amounts of time scrolling, watching, ang create content
affecting their academic performance and engagement in other
essential activities. Secondly, excessive tiktok usage may result in
negative psychological effects, including increased anxiety, depression,
and decrease self-esteem, as teenager compare themselves to others
and experience social pressures within the platforms environment.
In the early 2000s, social media platforms such as
FRIENDSTER, MYSPACE, and FACEBOOK began to gain popularity,
providing users with new avenues for online social interaction. This
shift marked the beginning of the digital era where individuals could
connect and share content with others across the globe. Tiktok was
launched globally in 2017, merging with the existing app Musical.ly. It
quickly gained popularity among teenagers due to its user-friendly
interface, algorithm driven content recommendation, and the ability to
create and share short videos with various effects and filters.
Cognitive Dissonance Theory (1957), suggests that individuals
experience conflict with their behaviors. Excessive tiktok usage may
lead to cognitive dissonance if teenagers feel it conflicts with their
desire for productivity or a balanced lifestyle.
“Microcelebrity” introduced by Senft, characterizes user who
systematically manage its platform practices to amp up its popularity.
It involves techniques of self-branding, such as “curating rearranging
and recirculating videos to present themselves in what they think as
the best way to do it (Senft 2008,349). “Influencers” introduced by
Abidin are “high profile micro celebrities” who “accumulate a relatively
large following” on their digital platform (2015.1). They gathered their
following through narration of their personal lives and lifestyle using
images and texts interacting with their audience online and offline,
and commodifying their followers by inserting narrative advertising to
blog or social media post (Abidin, 2015). In a platform where contents
have chances to display in front of millions of users, microcelebrities
and influencers who exist on tiktok ambitiously attract followers and
in the meantime shape their follower’s content.
To address the concerns surrounding the level of tiktok usage
among teenagers, various efforts have been undertaken. These include
educational campaigns and awareness programs highlighting the
risks associated with excessive social media use. Furthermore, some
schools and organizations have implemented policies and guidelines
to promote responsible social media usage and encourage a balanced
approach to technology.
Despite these efforts, the problem of excessive tiktok usage
among teenagers persists. One reason for this is the addictive nature
of social media platforms, including tiktok, which employs algorithms
and features designed to maximize engagement and user retention.
Additionally, the rapid evolution of technology and the increasing
accessibility of smartphones have made it challenging to effectively
regulate and monitor teenagers’ online behavior.
To address the issue of excessive tiktok usage among teenagers,
a multi-faceted approach is required. Firstly, fostering digital literacy
and media literacy skills among teenagers can empower them to make
informed decisions about their social media use and develop healthy
digital habits. Secondly, parental involvement and guidance are
crucial in setting appropriate boundaries and establishing open
communication channels with teenagers. Lastly, collaboration
between social media platforms, educational institutions, and mental
health professionals can lead to the development of comprehensive
guidelines, tools, and resources that promote responsible social media
use and provide support for teenagers facing difficulties related to
excessive tiktok usage.
While previous studies have examined the impact of social
media on teenager’s well-being, there is a need for further research
specifically focusing on tiktok and its influence on teenager lives. This

among teenagers, exploring its effects on various aspects of well-being.
