CHAPTER ONE
Background to industrial attachment.
The industrial attachment training is an essential component of the curriculum
of the College for the Diploma students, Faculty in DIPLOMA in QUANTITY
SURVEY in RIFT VALLEY TECHNICAL TRAINING INSTITUTE.
The attachment period is usually a maximum of twelve weeks, during which the
students are expected to acquire additional practical experience to supplement,
their course of study in the College. They are also exposed to the real world of
work and its challenges which will prepare them towards their future careers.
This report is the outcome of the twelve weeks practical training I had at
MINISTRY OF PUBLIC WORKS BOMET COUNTY.
It is said to be a supervised programmed since lecturers from the faculty visit
the students during this period and at the end of the programmed to ascertain the
success of the programmed and the amount of seriousness students attached to
it.

BACKGROUND OF MINISTRY OF PUBLIC WORKS BOMET COUNTY.
The Company envisions providing better services to all county residents by Providing Bill Of
Quantities services to enhance development and setting out of building and other related
structural works with view to support realization of the County Integrated Development Plan
(CIDP). The Organization is mandated to Construct, maintain and manage structural works
within the county as stipulated in the fourth schedule of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and
to provide services to other departments in design, documentation,preparing bill of quantitiea
and project implementation.
1.1 Rationale of attachment.
Exposing the student to the demands and challenges of the work place.
Gaining of practical experience.
Gaining of working ethics.
Helping the student acquire self-reliance skills.
Contribute to local industry.
Develop work-based skills.
Improve your cross-cultural communication skills.
It will give you a competitive edge over graduate with no work
experience.
You will get to meet different people in your future career path.

1.2 OBJECTIVES OF INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT IN MINISTRY OF
PUBLIC WORKS BOMET COUNTY.
1. To expose the students to work methods not taught in the College and to
provide access to products equipment not normally available in the
environment of the College.
2. To provide the students with an opportunity to apply knowledge in real work
situation thereby closing the gap between College work and the actual
practice.
3. To make the transition from school to the world of work smoothly and to
enhance student contacts for job placement.
4. To enlist and strengthen employers involvement in institutional activities and
in the entire educational process of preparing the students for employment in
industry.
5. To enhance industry´s satisfaction with the graduate of the Faculty in
particular and the College at large.
1.3 Scope
1.3.2 Benefits to students.
The industrial attachment seek to offer students a practical translation of the
theory they have been taught. It has also got individual benefit of liaising the
College to the industries, hence brightening the employment chances of the

students in the College. Through this attachment, I have generated a good
interpersonal relationship through my interaction with my supervisors and
colleagues. This has assisted me to interact confidently with people irrespective
of the position. Also I learned how to behave when dealing with people so as to
make a good relation with everyone in the Firm and the society at large.
1.3.3 Experience.
Through my attachment, I have gained practical skills by actively participating
in the following activities;
1. Design and interpretation of both architectural and structural drawings
using ARCHICAD AND AUTOCAD.
2. Preparing of Bill Of Quantities.
3. Site inspection and supervision
4. Writing site reports and creating work schedules
5. Setting out of building
I also learned office practice /office etiquette. I also learnt how to solve conflicts
which arises in the field which has aided me to improve on my social life
through interaction with clients either working under pressure with or without
supervision.

1.3.4 Moral Education
Working in Ministry of public works Bomet County exposes one to various
tenure situations or condition, Respect and honest.
1.5 Identification of attachment station for students.

The industrial attachment got individual benefit of liaising the College to the

1.5 Challenges of identification of a place for attachment.
1. Since my place of attachment was in Bomet County, I had to spend a lot
of transportation cost to reach there to do some follow-ups in those
offices so that I can be attached since being present physically was of
paramount importance.
2. Limited time period – the period of time for searching a place to be
attached was very limited as there was delays in getting our attachment
requirement from the college . This led too much spending while seeking
for a place to be attached which was in hurry as there was no much time.
3. Also during the attachment there was no provision to pay interns or any
drafted allowances , packages allowed so as to lease the expenses during
the training and thus catering for daily expenses become a burden.

3.0 Place of Attachment Description.
Vision & Mission
VISION
To realize and attain; modern standard roads, admired transport sector, and best architectural
services which encompasses modern structural standards.
CORE VALUE
1. Facilitate adequate provision of cost-effective structure, including government
buildings and other public works.
2. Develop and maintain structure with a view to support realization of the County
Integrated Development Plan. Develop and maintain technical and quality audit for
structure, and other related public works in the public sector.
3. Provide Quality Company works services to all County Government entities and
general public.

4.0 REPORTING TO THE ATTACHMENT.
I report to my attachment station on and started my attachment as from
25THSeptember 2023 to 24th November 2023.
4.1 My responsibilities
The following duties were assigned to me;

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS.
CONCLUSION
The compulsory supervised industrial attachment of the College gives students
the opportunity to apply knowledge in real work, exposing students to work
methods not taught in the College and provide access to products equipment not
available in the College as well as assessing students interest in the occupation
he/she plans to undertake, the programmed should therefore be maintain and the
period extended.

RECOMMENDATION
Students coming for industrial attachment at the MINISTRY Of Public Works
Bomet County should be taken through some form of orientation to help them
have enough knowledge about what they are about to do.
There should be a laid down procedure for monitoring workers as well as some
motivational packages for workers who establish them self well.
The attachment is very beneficial to students as it assists them to blend
academic work with that of the industry therefore much importance must be
given to attachment by students.
