1. Types of materials
● Resistant material is a material that requires force in order to be worked or shaped
● Properties of materials tells designer, technologist and engineers to select from a wide
range of material to suit the product specification
○ Classification of material so less limit on product selection
○ Properties of material to add to function and aesthetic
● Category of materials
○ Resistant Materials is the study of the structural, functional and aesthetic
properties of woods, metals, plastics, ceramics and composites and their use in
manufacturing processes.
● Physical Properties describes how material behaves under certain condition are major
factor for specific users, purpose and condition.
○ Mechanical : how material react to physical force eg material become brittle when
repeatedly flexed or bent
○ Electrical : materials conductive property of insulation and conductivity of
electricity eg screwdriver polymer handle insulate heat from the conductive tip
○ Chemical: how material react to chemicals eg ferrous metal rust when exposed to
oxygen
○ Thermal: how material respond to different temperature eg melting, boiling point
and molding temperature range
○ Magnetic: materials like ferrous metal attracts magnet or can be magnetized eg
magnetic catch to keep door close
○ Permeability: the degree which liquids or gasses can pass through a material eg
wood can be varnished for low permeability
1
○ Aesthetic: visual sensory properties of surface and form of materia eg colour and
shine
○ Tactile: touch or sensory properties of a material eg texture of scent
● Working/ Mechanical Properties describes how material behaves when being worked or
shaped
○ Hardness: Resistance to scratching, cutting and wear
○ Elasticity: The ability to get back to its original shape after it has been deformed
○ Malleability: ability to be easily pressed, stretched and hammered into shapes
○ Ductility: ability to be stretched without breaking
○ Brittleness: ability to break easily without bending
○ Toughness: ability to resistance to breaking, bending or deforming
○ Compressive strength: ability to stay strong under pressure
○ Tensile strength: ability to stay strong when stretched
○ Work hardness: when the structure of the metal alters as a result of consistent
hammering or train
○ Plasticity: ability to permanently change shape or form
● Selecting materials is based on function, condition, physical and working properties
