WEEK 1

OBJECTIVE
Identify the operational part of the keyboard and know their functions.
Learn the basic techniques involved in the operation of the computer

PERFORMANCE GOAL

1. Know Your Computer


2. To key the alphabetic and numeric keys by touch.
3. To develop good keyboarding techniques (mastery of the keyboard)
4. To key fluently—at least 25 words per minute.
5. To develop reasonable accuracy

Know Your Computer

The numbered parts are found on most computers. The location of some parts will vary.

CPU (Central Processing Unit): Internal operating unit or “brain” of computer.


CD-ROM drive: Reads data from and writes data to a CD or DVD.
Monitor: Displays text and graphics on a screen.
Mouse: Used to input commands.
Keyboard: An arrangement of letter, figure, symbol, control, function, and editing keys and a numeric
keypad.

Familiarization of keyboard (Keys Definition)

1. Alphanumeric keys: Letters, numbers, and symbols.


2. Numeric keypad: Keys at the right side of the keyboard used to enter numeric copy and perform
calculations.
3. Function (F) keys: Used to execute commands, sometimes with other keys. Commands vary with
software.
4. Arrow keys: Move insertion point up, down, left, or right.
5. ESC (Escape): Closes a software menu or dialog box.
6. TAB: Moves the insertion point to a preset position.
7. CAPS LOCK: Used to make all capital letters.
8. SHIFT: Makes capital letters and symbols shown at tops of number keys. Used also to type single
capital letter. There are 2 shift keys: right and left.
9. CTRL (Control): With other key(s), executes commands. Commands may vary with software.
10. ALT (Alternate): With other key(s), executes commands. Commands may vary with software.
11. Space Bar: Inserts a space in text.
12. ENTER (return): Moves insertion point to margin and down to next line. Also used to execute
commands.
13. DELETE: Removes text to the right of insertion point.
14. NUM LOCK: Activates/deactivates numeric keypad.
15. INSERT: Activates insert or typeover.
16. BACKSPACE: Deletes text to the left of insertion point.
